The tree has been used as a Stanford symbol for a long time. The tree has been on the university's seal since at least 1906.
A version of the Block S with tree goes back to 1931. The current version of the Block S with tree has been used by the university, including athletics, since the 1990s. There's a prominent Block S with tree on the outside of the stadium.

I know they have, I mean more frequently than once per season. Perhaps mixing and matching the black components with the cardinal/white components. That kind of thing.

I don't think they're heading towards mixing black into the rotation with cardinal and white. Black is a fashion color in football, and guys think they're like some superhero or arch villain when they're wearing all blacks. Who knows how long it'll last, but it's here now. If it stays forever, fine. It's no different than ND wearing green jerseys a change of pace.
As for the Block S with the tree, I think it's the athletic department's attempt and Nike's of consolidating the brand, just as cal did a couple of years ago with the be.ar logo. Stanford surveyed fans a couple of years ago and asked which S they associated with Stanford athletics. My guess is that it was the one with the the tree. Going forward, we'll see the block S with tree used throughout the athletic department. I prefer the old S, but it's not something I'm going to lose sleep over.

I actually like this idea. I thought it was a nice approach when Cal did it, and it's befitting of Stanford's position as the premier athletic program in the nation to have the same motif across the board.

OK, you're old!
I am old too. But, I like the idea. It seems like a lot of recruits like uniform variations as well.

I like the subtle use of the tree to suggest "ka-ching!" (aka "the 40-year decision")......

The official Stanford Identity Toolkit has some information on the emblems.
"The plain Block "S" evolved over the decades into its most recent incarnation. The emblem was used by Stanford Athletics on sports uniforms until 2015. That year, Stanford introduced an updated Block "S" with Tree emblem, which is now used for both athletic and non-athletic purposes."
https://identity.stanford.edu/overview/history
The red block "S" with the green tree in it has always been my favorite Stanford emblem. The red block "S" with the white tree is a secondary version and seems to be used most on the athletic uniforms. I saw that version on both the white and black swimming caps used by the women's team this weekend. I'm undecided if I would like the block "S" with the tree more if they used the green tree. I like the white tree "S" on the football uniforms more than on the helmets, but I'm not sure why. I don't dislike the tree logo and actually like the idea of more unified branding for Stanford, but I am still adjusting to the look of it on the helmets.Â

I wish Stanford basketball brought back their old uniforms, with the piping running through the block "S."

Good question. The logo on the floor at Maples is the block "S" with the white tree. I think it would look better with the green tree outlined in white as it is in the main logo.Â

At least we'll never get mistaken for Michigan State by any colorblind folks. Or Syracuse.

I think it would be a mistake to use a Block S with a green tree in our athletic uniforms. Green is not one of our colors. If we were to throw in another color, the look of the uniforms would lose focus, would be too busy. The classic cardinal and white is very clean and well established. I don't have a big problem with black accents or black alternate uniforms because it's kind of a neutral color that goes with everything. But throwing in some green would be too much, in my view.
I like the old Block S because it has so much history and it's a well established symbol. But I have to admit that the Block S with tree is more distinctive. Over time, the Block S with tree probably will give us stronger branding because it will be immediately identifiable as a unique Stanford symbol.
Of course, I have zero experience in design or marketing, so what do I know. . .
