You all actually had me convinced this was a good matchup for Stanford.  Now I'm just hoping the Trees don't get blown out.

Hello Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl.

OMG that sucked.  First we finally start moving the football, and a sack on a makable 3rd and 5 puts us out of field goal range.  The punt goes into the end zone.  The defense holds them to a three and out, and Montgomery fumbles the ensuing punt.

ASU 14, Stanford 0.

Anyone think we can we score 14 points in the second half to tie it up and go into overtime, or is that asking too much?

I hate to say this but I'm done with this team.  This season is over to me.  See you next year. >:(

Single coverage on Jaelen Strong split wide with no safety help on third and goal from the 4?

Check.

seriously? a run? a short pass? what fresh hell is this?

Re: STanford - Arizona State live thread - washingtonismoney - 10-18-2014

The really great thing about failing coaching regimes is they always make it super-obvious.

Re: STanford - Arizona State live thread - SeattleTree - 10-18-2014

I feel bad for the defense.  This defense is nasty and championship-level good.  The offense is getting dominated by a bad ASU defense.  And now even the strong part of our special teams is stinking it up.

Re: STanford - Arizona State live thread - Rally - 10-18-2014

5 yards rushing in the first half.  Never thought I would see that.  And watching Sanders "block" I understand why he doesn't play more.  Montgomery can't catch, no one can pick up a blitz, missed tackles (although the D is being heroic) this is a joke.  Mercy rule?

Re: STanford - Arizona State live thread - jacketree - 10-18-2014

The end of FSU-ND game was fantastic.

Watching Stanford is like watching paint not dry. (Paint that dries equates success.) Lotta football left. Maybe Stanford can learn how to block at halftime. 14+ points in a half seems like a tall order for this offense.

Maybe Stanford just isn't that good this year?

Re: STanford - Arizona State live thread - SeattleTree - 10-18-2014

Stanford has 69 total yards and 0 points at the half.  The Trees have 5 yards rushing.

This ASU defense gave up 308 yards and 14 points to Weber State; 337 yards and 23 points to New Mexico; 545 yards and 24 points to Colorado; 580 yards and 62 points to UCLA; 493 yards and 34 points to USC.

And Stanford has 69 yards and 0 points at the half.

Husak on the radio just called for a quarterback change.  Says Hogan is not seeing the field, is not accurate with his passes, does not see the blitzes coming.

He is blind if he thinks Hogan is the only problem.

Re: STanford - Arizona State live thread - Cardinal96 - 10-18-2014

This team is very hard to watch.  Blown blocking assignments, dropped passes, mediocre QB play and awful special teams (which is unusual).  Montgomery has really regressed this year.

On the plus side it is much less stressful to watch us play.  When your expectations are lower it is harder to be disappointed.

Sadly it's not just Hogan who is not seeing the blitzes coming.

Last time Stanford was shutout at half?

Last time Stanford trailed anyone by 14 points?

No one believes he is the only problem.  But he makes a fair point.

Re: STanford - Arizona State live thread - Viking_Guy - 10-18-2014

The 3rd and 5 throw on a simple pass on the last drive being 4 yards behind the receiver on a 10 yard route is also... well, symptomatic.

Re: STanford - Arizona State live thread - 81alum - 10-18-2014

ASU borrowed a page from MSU and is run blitzing on 1st and 2nd downs.  The way to punish that is with the short passing game into the spaces vacated by the linebackers.  We need more slants and short passes to TEs and backs over the middle.  We did throw one such pass to a TE and it worked beautifully.

Ty, unfortunately, is reverting to his sophomore form the last few games with dropped passes.  Plus a fumbled kickoff that cost him a giant hole to run through and a poor decision on the punt return.

Put Crower in at QB and McCaffrey for punt returns.  Pass to the TEs over and over until they stop run blitzing.  At least we get the ball first.
