Re: Looks like Mason's gone - yvonne - 01-17-2014

I think some important questsions with the Mason hire are whether he will bring any of the coaches with him, which ones, and whether recruits will leave if their position coaches leave.

Re: Looks like Mason's gone - 71Bear - 01-17-2014

You guys are far too smart to hire Pendergast.  He is a terrible DC.  Heck, he is so bad that he makes Buh look like Fangio.

Pendergast's idea of defending the spread is pack the box and hope for the best.  A good example of this is the UC v. Nevada games several years ago when Kaepernick had a brobdingnagian day v. the B.ears.

Re: Looks like Mason's gone - Bruce Wang - 01-17-2014

Given that the Vandy job is the bird in hand, I don't blame Mason for taking the opportunity.

The potential opening in college that I think is the best: Virginia.  Decent recruiting home base (we should know).  Great academics that you can use as a recruiting lure.  Wealthy donor base with manageable expectations.  And a major conference with beatable teams.  I bet Pep would take that job if it was offered to him.

One does not "wreck" havoc.  One wreaks havoc.  And now you've been quoted on the Vandy board and some misfit know-it-all (Vandy edition) is going to note the error and they will have a thread that veers into a riff on how easy it is to punch through Stanford's faux elite self-regard.  And that will wreck my day.

Hey English is my second language!  You've got to forgive the occasional malapropism.

And where is CowboyIndian on this?  Can't believe some Commodore beat him to the punch.

I knocked myself out slapping my forehead. So what happened?

Re: Looks like Mason's gone - Bruce Wang - 01-17-2014

While we are on the topic of malapropisms as related to Vandy, the second order of business for Mason (triage on their 2014 recruiting class being first) is to change their chant from "Anchor Down!" to "Anchors Aweigh!".

Re: Looks like Mason's gone - Leftcoast - 01-17-2014

Mason and Vandy now give me an SEC rooting interest.  Go Derek and the Commodores!  (Even if that sounds like a 60s rock band. )

I'd like to see them prosper, particularly if that success comes at the expense of the SECs trifecta of evil - Auburn, Alabama and LSU.

I've always liked Vandy.

Like all good commodores, they should "Sail On":

Vanderbilt.

Private University? - check
Research heavy?  - check
Medical Center?  - check
1800's Railroad tycoon as founder? - check

Best to Derek Mason for all he brought to the Stanford Football program.  I will be looking high and low for a Stavanderford Commordinals hat.

Bear Insider declares it for...Lance Anderson - Redrum - 01-17-2014

Which may be true, but nobody else other than an SI blog is reporting it.  And, if you read the post it's very short on facts and long on phrases like "expected to name".  But the Be.arz bit on it and ran with it.  One marveled that we are not just deep in players, but in coaches, too.  But Be.ars is Be.ars and soon reverted to form with this;

"You absolutely have to hire someone at that level from within if you are hiding rampant use of steroids. It was a no brainer."

Re: Looks like Mason's gone - ChicagoCard - 01-18-2014

Long-ish article from a couple months back shows why Lance Anderson is likely to become defensive coordinator.

Article reminds that L. Anderson used to be recruiting coordinator but that Mike Sanford took over that official role. So, 1) who is or becomes the recruiting coordinator? 2) who is brought in to be defensive backs coach? and 3) running backs coach?

Could a new nickname for the defense be The Anderson Gang (i.e. 3 different Andersons)? Although on second thought I don't like that, would seem to be inspired by the notorious Missouri guerrillas.

Re: Looks like Mason's gone - Bruce Wang - 01-18-2014

Lance will be defensive coordinator.  If not here, then Vanderbilt.  Drukarev retweeted chatter that Mason asked Shaw if he could take Bloomgren.  If Sanford wasn't at his alma mater, you'd think Mason would try to get him.  Maybe he is.  Somebody working for Turley is probably going to get a promotion too.  This was a very smart hire by Vanderbilt.  From the outside, it looks like the best hire during this year's musical chair session. Basically we have the blueprint for success, so you have to hire one of the architects.

I've been thinking about why I'm so happy for Mason.  Basically it's like one of the players getting drafted by a good team.

Re: Looks like Mason's gone - OutsiderFan - 01-18-2014

If Bloomgren leaves it might not be for more money.  It also offers a chance to get away from Shaw and most likely have full autonomy on the offense.  And frankly, it would afford Shaw the opportunity to bring in an OC with some of his own ideas and breathe some creativity into the offense.

As for Anderson as DC, it is pretty much a no brainier.  DB is a critical position for the defense, but not many college coaches know how to develop 3-4 OLBs.  Promoting Anderson would allow Shaw to bring in a new DB coach, and probably one with NFL experience.

Re: Looks like Mason's gone - Bruce Wang - 01-18-2014

Best part of this interview is Mase's implicit diss of the Hunchbacks.

Re: Looks like Mason's gone - washingtonismoney - 01-18-2014

"We'll utilize the quarterback position in a way that will surprise some people." Interesting line from Mason about his preferred offensive philosophy -- indicating more running, perhaps?  The rest sounded like stuff we've seen a bunch before -- multiple position groups, etc.

One of the storylines that surprised me throughout the season was the use of Hogan's legs -- it seemed as if the coaches were reluctant to let him loose against weaker teams, perhaps accounting for some of the difficulty we had against some weaker teams. I wonder how that might evolve, particularly if Burns is good enough next year to displace Crower.

Re: Looks like Mason's gone - stanfan95118 - 01-18-2014

I wouldn't be surprised if Mason takes David Kotulski, perhaps as DC. He has experience and has worked with Mason prior to Stanford (Bucknell).

Re: Looks like Mason's gone - BobK - 01-18-2014

Maybe the new DB coach will be Nick Sanchez.

Bloomgren was hired by Shaw.
