I think this will be a good thing. Split the stadium in half -- kind of like they've always done for Texas vs. Oklahoma at the Cotton Bowl -- and you've got have the stadium in Cardinal Red and the other half in blue. As for the uniforms, I don't think the NCAA likes to have both teams wearing home unis. UCLA and Southern Cal always used to do that, but when they returned to that tradition several years ago, they were notified that the visiting team would be assessed an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the opening kickoff. The home team simply declined the penalty, and they were off and running.

As for the schedule benefits, all you need do is look at the snoozefest that was last season's home slate. After Southern Cal, it was a whole lot of nothing. It'll be nice to have either ND or C.al at the end of each season.

Hank - the rule that was in place for the Centennial Big Game is no longer in effect.  UCLA and SC have both worn their home uni's the last couple of years.

As for how benefits the most - I would consider it a toss up.  Both schools need to rebalance their schedules and this is a great opportunity to do so.

It is my understanding that Barbour initiated the idea with the Niners but I could be wrong about that....

Shaw's on board: http://blog.sfgate.com/stanfordsports/2013/08/24/shaw-likes-idea-of-moving-2014-big-game-to-santa-clara/

Quote:“If that comes to fruition, which it looks like it might, I think that would be great,” Shaw said. “It would be awesome. It would be a great experience for our players to play in a venue like that.

“The stadium is going to be phenomenal, and I appreciate the 49ers loaning that out to us. I think it would be great for the Bay Area, and for both Stanford and Cal.”

It's shocking, absolutely shocking, that he used the word "phenomenal".

Absolutely. There's no question about it. Toughness.

I don't like the proposal to play the Big Game in Santa Clara. I think college football belongs on a college campus, in a college town. To me, being on campus is one of the really fun things about college football. If I wanted to attend a game in an NFL stadium next to an amusement park, I'd buy a 49ers ticket. But if it happens, I'll be there.

Amen, Terry!

The game's not going to be played anywhere near the college town part of Santa Clara.

I am with the nays.  In addition to all the other reasons, remember the KFH Bowl is now played there also, which will, over the years, mean several "return trips" to the same stadium, just weeks apart (hopefully more for them than us).  Also, from a player perspective, I think a 2-year starter deserves to play a Big Game at home at least one time.

Re: 2014 Big Game to be played in Santa Clara? - 82lsju - 08-25-2013

so let's say they do move the game and don't put in the extra seats for special events so there are 68K seats.  Assume the 49er club STHs buy their 9K seats either because they want to go to the game or because they think they can resell them and make money, that gets us to 59K seats, each school gets 29.5K.  I'd imagine we'd sell all of ours given the proximity to Palo Alto.  Given that C.al has had trouble selling 15K seats for the game in our stadium I'm not so sure they would sell their 29.5K seats.

There are reasonable voices on Ca.l fan boards, just not a lot of them.  Here's an 11 page thread on Bear Insider detailing how our rivals really, really hate this.  A writer's hate is cubed if they believe the move in any way helps Stanford.  The first few pages are somewhat reasonable but once the trope that this helps Stanford forms it gets ugly quickly.

http://www.bearinsider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=75553

Among the interesting things you'll learn is that this move is all a Stanford plot with Sandy Barbour as our sock puppet.  By the end someone, apparently in all seriousness, is suggesting Nevada or Davis as rivalry alternatives due to our deep perfidy.  Some one else suggests we give them $10 million plus all gate revenue for their inconvenience.  Despite this it's a generally held belief that Ca.l will pack Santa Clara, never mind that Cal has struggled to fill their seat allotment at Stanford and was pathetic at AT&T.

Just dip into this - you'll need a shower if you dive too deep.

If beating a common opponent would send Stanford to the conference championship game, Cal fans would probably want to lose the game.

Re: 2014 Big Game to be played in Santa Clara? - 71Bear - 08-25-2013

I laugh at the notion that UC didn't fill their seat allotment at LSJU because it wasn't that long ago when UC occupied more seats at old Stanford Stadium than the home standing Cardinal.  Heck, one year, UC had more fans there than the entire capacity of the new Stanford Stadium.

College football is cyclical.  UC was up, Stanford was down; now it is the opposite ; in the not too distant future it will reverse; then it will reverse again, etc. etc. etc.

The novelty of the game in Santa Clara will ensure that both sides will sell their entire allotment.

As some posters here have said in the past, just the volume of UC grads v. LSJU grads who live in this area gives UC a distinct advantage when it comes to selling seats.

Lastly, an aside to Lefty...  Never assume that BI's public site represents the thinking of rationale UC fans.  That site attracts the fringe element and they are, as a whole, clueless when it comes to UC sports.  In fact, there has been a much better and far more logical discussion on the private site.  I would suggest that there is a 70-30 split IN FAVOR of playing the game in Santa Clara.

Palo Alto is not a college town.  For one glorious night back in 1991?, when a Stanford-UCLA game mattered and the most convenient way to see it was on ESPN at bars in Palo Alto, it was a college town.  Other than that night, Palo Alto might as well be Wellesley, MA.  That's the college-age Publius speaking.  Middle-aged Publius here would love to live there: Palo Alto, not Wellesley (yuck).

That being said, I agree with the general sentiment that college football belongs on campus.  But an exception to rebalance the schedule makes sense to me.  And I do think it will be cool to go to a new NFL stadium just this one time.

I agree with that general sentiment too, although there are some schools (UCLA and San Diego State are two that jump to mind) that seem to function fine without it. I don't think an occasional exception to the rule needs to cause a brobdingnagian amount of hand wringing and angst, though.

Well, I don't feel nearly as bad about being banned forever, then.

OK!  ;)

If the game was in 2019, I would agree that you never know.  However, this game is scheduled for 2014.  I suspect that the reversal you hope will occur in the not too distant future is not quite that close.  More importantly crowd support tends to lag the field performance, so in terms of optimal Stanford crowd support the timing is really ideal, from a Stanford point of view.

FWIW - The novelty I am not eager to experience is the idea that we will all have to use those new NFL clear plastic baggies.

Re: 2014 Big Game to be played in Santa Clara? - terry - 08-25-2013

As a setting for a college football game, there is no comparison between Palo Alto/Stanford or Berkeley on the one hand, and Levi's Stadium on the other hand. If you guys want to go tailgate in the parking lot at Great America, you should go buy 49ers tickets. College football belongs on campus.

Hey Farm...

In 06 when LSJU was playing like they belonged in the Big Sky conference and UC was the co-champion of the P10, did anyone think that things would turn around so quickly?

Well, I'll only speak for myself but I knew the worm would turn.  It always does.  That is why it is so important to live in the moment.  Enjoy your ride because it will end.  It always does.

71Bear, surely the worm will turn.  The difference is now it's proven that Stanford can compete at the highest level because of, not in spite of, our higher academic standards.  We might hit a bump if/when Shaw leaves, but his successors can no longer say winning is impossible here.  Given that Shaw's here a while, the prospects for the worm turning in your lifetime are not good.  And if/when he does leave, one of the catalysts would be Shaw winning the whole thing.  That surely will eat every Bear alive for the rest of their lives.

Pub...

Not really.  I am firmly in the camp of raising our program to the level of the more successful programs rather than hoping those programs sink to the lower level now occupied by the program I follow.....

I do agree with one aspect of your post.  I believe that high academic standards are no impediment to success.Â
