"The Cardinal is in the NCAA tournament." is in the AP Stylebook as an example?!?!

How sadly outdated.  :(  They must mean the women's team.  :)

A fantastic choice! Although I prefer their Temptation.

I think this calls for thorough research.

Was at the game w/my 13 year old wearing her Luck (colts) jersey.  I saw every televised game of his in college and all of his Colts' performances available on NY area TV, but I never had the pleasure of seeing him live.  I had a perfect view of that second score to Hilton.  I honestly never saw a ball thrown better than that.  Given where it was caught, it was probably close to 40 yards in the air, and perhaps he had a window 6" bigger than the width of the football to make it work given how close Hosley was to it and Hilton's toe to the sideline.  Unbelievable.

Had a perfect angle on Coby's drop.  I have no idea how Luck cold throw the ball straight up field running to his left.  For a split second, I had visions of Fleener going 70+ yards in the open field for a quick score until he dropped yet another one.  I think he just needs a breakout game to get his confidence backs.  Pep's offense certainly will give him that opportunity.

Luck has been amazing throwing the ball on the run. One of my favorite of his college plays is this one, rolling to the right and throwing to his left:

I don't think people appreciate how difficult a throw like that is. And it's on an absolute rope.

Hogan has shown an ability to do a little bit of that as well. One throw in the Oregon game in particular where I believe he was rolling right and threw straight ahead or slightly to the left. Maybe it has to do with the Stanford S&C?

I worry about Fleener's mindset at this point. The Colts fans are all crying "bust" and Allen, drafted after him last year, has gotten a lot of accolades. I wonder it's a head game for him. The guy has the talent to play at that level.

Quote:Again, I refer you to the AP Stylebook, sports section (pertinent rule in bold):

This is a poor choice by AP. Style is frequently arbitrary -- some people spell it honor and others honour, and somebody has to make a decision about which the company will use -- but in this case it's a wildly arbitrary decisision that contravenes the rules of grammar. Its advocates should be tortured extensively before their executions.

I prefer to torture the writers who come up with such awkward construction. But lacking a pica pole these days to smack them with, I have to settle for recasting the sentence.

Style decisions are based on the need for consistency and clarity. In the United States, we use American English; hence, we spell "honor" without the "u." For a British reading audience, it obviously makes sense to use the British variant "honour."

slightly tougher than rolling right and throwing left... - Mick - 08-19-2013

...is running left and throwing right...especially sixty yards on a line, against U. of Oklahoma...as I saw sophomore John Elway sprinting to his left, nearing the sideline around midfield, then throwing to the right corner of the end zone to (I think) Andre Tyler.  Just a jaw-dropping play, as Stanford snapped a 20 game win streak for Oklahoma in Norman.  Does anyone have the link to the video?

I bet individual papers and news sources edit it to their company styles.

My 9th grade English teacher could straighten this out. Why is it that old bitches are never around when you could actually use them.
