All Right Now is pretty darn good. I played it 100's of times while in the band in the 70's.

But just to speculate:

Have any former dollies ever posted on the cardboard?

Also... Back when lsjumb used to enter the stadium and circumnavigate the track before the game... What did they call that drum routine/rhythm/thing they would do while (non) marching... It was cool. Used nowadays?

If I remember correctly, Geordie Lowry (Lowery?) wrote that for the Rose Bowl of 1970/1971 and it was known as the Rose Bowl March (Rose Bowl Cadence?)

Re: Replacement for "All Right Now" - 81alum - 06-03-2013

I love ARN and enjoy listening to the many variations they sneak into it.

As for traditional marching band music, no.  What makes the Stanford Band unique is its nonconformity--its deliberate violation of the traditions of militaristic marching band music--the uniforms, the Sousa marches, ye old fight songs, etc.  It was making a statement that embraced diversity instead of conformity.

In order to keep with the spirit of the modern Band, you would think that it would need to update its music, and I would be for expansion of the repertoire in principle.  But here is the thing--the role of music in our culture has changed since 1972 when the band adopted this 1970 song.  Popular music in that era was often an act of youthful rebellion, a declaration of separation from an older, seemingly unimaginative generation.  I'm not sure that music really fills that generation-gap rebellious role now, and so you would have to search pretty hard for something from the last two years that would be the modern equivalent to 1970 era rock.

On the other hand, as a 50 something, I would not be in a very good position to know!  Maybe we should just leave it to today's band to figure out!

I wouldn't want to replace ARN, but I would be interested in the band's version of this song:

I have the perfect LSJUMB song, guaranteed to appeal to all demographics:

For the young folks, a good song actually made after they were born!
For the older folks, NPR!
For the folks of color, Andre 3000!

EDIT: For LSJUMB, a delightfully weird and unintelligible song! (I believe "delightfully weird and unintelligible" is the group's aspiration/mission statement).

Ditto here.  Drives my weenie co-workers nuts, which is why my ringer volume is on max :)

I used to have it on the ol' Blackberry but when I switched to an iPhone I couldn't find it. Any hints?

White Punks on Dope is played by the Band after most basketball games.  Stick around for the fun

All Right Now is perfect but if we ever change bring in the Black Parade.

I remember White Punks on Dope after the Rose Bowl, as well as Radar Love.

I'll send you a copy.

Re: Replacement for "All Right Now" - CowboyIndian - 06-04-2013

Thanks, Yvonne. I sort of hate to get rid of Elmore James' "Dust My Broom" but life is a series of hard choices.

Re: Replacement for "All Right Now" - jacketree - 06-04-2013

I dunno Cowboy, getting rid of "Dust My Broom" is pretty serious. I would really think about it.  Maybe ease the transition by using Taj Mahal's version as an interim step.

My son once had the best person-specific ringtone ever. Somehow he managed to record his mother saying (actually screeching) something to the effect of: "You better pick up right now Mister!  Right Now!! Do you hear me!!!!!!!"  It was awesome until she found out about it. Then it became more awesome.

Not sure how I did it (was about 3 yrs ago), but I got it on my iphone.  I can send you the mp file if you pm me your email.

You should have played "All Right Now" for his voicemail.

Re: Replacement for "All Right Now" - fullmetal - 06-05-2013

U$C uses "All Right Now" right after a turnover happens in their favor, iirc.  I'm not sure if they realize that it's Stanford's song too...?

Props to "Smith" for being a good sport about it though!

You can be quite sure that U$C knows "All Right Now" is ours.

Well played...well played.  They do indeed :)

Re: Replacement for "All Right Now" - g1313 - 06-06-2013

The past few years I've noticed a few additions to the band repertoire during actual game action:

Seven Nation Army by the White Stripes during big moments - despite the fact that almost every college and pro team of any sport now plays this song at some point during a game, it still gives me chills when it comes on. I think we do a good job of saving it for truly key defensive stands in the fourth quarter.

Shots! by LMFAO ft Lil' Jon - Don't recall whether this is spontaneous or keyed by a certain event - maybe on a key first down? It always seems popular in the student section.

Any other action-specific music that I should be on the watch for next year?

(06-01-2013, 06:35 PM)akCard link Wrote:Hell no, I don't want to see (or hear) that "All Right Now" has been replaced. Sure it doesn't have the martial quality of a traditional college fight song but at this point I can't ever see LSJUMB ever playing anything remotely like 'Fight On' or the UCLA/kal song; in fact, just the thought of that coming out of the Band section at any Stanford home game makes me cringe.

I will admit that some rock/pop/whatever songs translate better than others. "Love Cats" by the Cure? Not so much. "White Punks on Dope" by The Tubes?? Love that song and I've been sad to see that it's kinda fallen out of the Band's repertoire. I am surprised, though, at some of the songs that have escaped the Band. "Kashmir??" C'mon, guys! In hindsight, that should have been an obvious addition (and a long time ago at that) but 'zona was the first school I heard play it and now so do many others.

What I wouldn't mind hearing is better musicianship out of the LSJUMB because when you see someone running around the field banging on a stainless steel sink, it's clear that that's not a prority.

Re: Replacement for "All Right Now" - Bruce Wang - 06-06-2013

For those of you unfamiliar with LMFAO, one of their members had a physical confrontation on an airplane with a famous former Stanford student that ran for President recently.

I actually like LMFAO.  Given my taste in music runs counter to most of you guys, you will likely agree with NME's opinion:

"songs so imbecilic that if you ate a can of Alphabetti Spaghetti you could sh!t out more intelligent lyrics to a more pleasing tune."
