Garvin, what shows do you recommend that are under the radar (besides Body of Proof)?

I, too, have a morbid fascination with end of the world-type movies and TV shows but I've had a hard getting into Revolution though, except for that the daughter character (Charlie?) annoys the hell out of me, I can't say why. If it weren't for the fact that I'd set it up as a series recording on my DVR, I would never have known it was back on the air if the next episode hadn't shown up on the list of scheduled recordings.

Based partly on garvin's review, I was looking forward to The Americans but have not been hooked because up 'til now I've found it ... kind of boring. I absolutely love Mad Men - a show with a slow boil if there ever was one - so I don't need explosions every other second but when a show sits unwatched on my DVR like The Americans has, it's a sign I'm not really into it.

For me, the new show I've enjoyed most this season has been Arrow on The CW. Somewhat of a guilty pleasure to be sure but it mixes just enough drama (including melodrama) with action and beefcake to make for an entertaining hour.

Amish Gangsters?!  Sold.  The Amish and other traditionalist Christian sects fascinate me.  Back in Ohio, one evening after school I walked into our restaurant to help out and found an Amish family seated!  The Amish eat Chinese food?!?! I immediately ran around the parking lot, looking for their horse and buggy (which I could not find).  Later I figured out that they were just your run of the mill Mennonites, who do drive cars albeit only ones without chrome.

Anyhow, as cool as the Amish are, nothing beats the Shakers and their awesome furniture and folk art.  Really too bad they died out because of the not believing in sex and all.  Then again, maybe that's why their stuff was so awesome.

Watched a few episodes of Mad Men and just couldn't get into it.  I think the problem was I couldn't be imaginary friends with the people on that show. And that's my hesitation with The Americans.  As a Chinese-American, I can't imagine being friends with Soviet spies, with the Soviets being enemy of the Chinese and Americans.  Based on your collective recommendation, I will check it out this off season.

Re: Hey Garvin! - M T - 03-25-2013

Egads, have we descended into pop culture?  Next, we'll be talking about some Stanford lady on some Survivor show.... Oh? We already did?

Well, so far I've enjoyed the handful of episodes of The Americans but it hasn't got its hooks into me as I expected it to do.  I was wondering if they were already jumping the shark with the nudity of the last couple of shows.  I applaud them for mostly staying apolitical and for at least thinking through the issues of a long-term, arranged marriage.  So far, beyond the main characters & the one FBI agent, the characters have no development.  They could have done better with the (now former) Resident.  He had possibilities and was showing some character, until they (IMO stupidly, both from a TV perspective and a counterintelligence perspective) used him as a scapegoat.  (I think they'd have done better to change the Richard Thomas character.  I can't see him ever developing into anyone interesting.)

I didn't find Top of the Lake that interesting.  Too many trite characters.  One could make a sensitive show about an 11-year old girl that is pregnant presumably by abuse.  This isn't that show.  (Ah... the Mad Men reference was made because the lead character in the new show was Peggy in Mad Men.  In this show, she seems to be channeling the lead actress in AMC's The Killing, which I enjoyed.)

Honestly, I swear I spend more time watching WBB than prime-time TV.  My wife is being patient with me as I have 18 2-hr HD games on the TiVo currently.

And now, we return you to your regularly scheduled sports programming....
