What happens in no Big 10 team is in the BCS top 14? Does the Rose Bowl have a free hand to select who it wants ie Notre Dame? Big 10 currently has no team in the top 14...

Doesn't every BCS conference champion get a spot?....without regard to ranking? Did they change the "Connecticut" rule?

Yes my understanding is the top #14 rule is only for at-large selections.

I don't think the Big 12 will get two teams. If Stanford beats Oregon State, Stanford jumps Oklahoma. Plus, I'm going to guess Oklahoma loses to Okie State.

The Big12 computer ratings are so, so good that even 3 and 4 loss Big12 teams will ultimately be in the top 14. Just wait.
The BigTen winner will get a bid, but it is important that the BigTen winner take one of the top 14 slots so that there is not a spot for the ACC #2.
The ACC #2, if available, will be taken by the Orange Bowl before Stanford, even if Stanford is in the top 8-10 in the BCS.
However it now looks likely that Oregon will be in the BCS CG if they beat Stanford, and Oregon in the BCS CG definitely improves the odds of Stanford in the Rose Bowl as an at-large BCS Top 14.
So in a weird way it appears that win or lose against Oregon then Stanford could have the best chance at the Rose Bowl. At the moment the Rose Bowl is down to 4 Pac-12 teams either as the AQ or at-large replacement (Oregon, Stanford, UCLA, USC).

Mark Edwards of ESPN thinks the Rose Bowl would pick Notre Dame over a 3-loss Stanford in the scenario where we lose to Oregon but beat UCLA.

It is probably best for Stanford fans to have this view of the domers popularity. For the moment beating UCLA is not a given. Just like the Ducks beating Stanford might not happen.
Still, in that scenario 9-3, Stanford is in the top BCS 14. Stanford then becomes an option for the BCS Bowls. That is an accomplishment and could serve as 2013 motivation.
There are now only a few games that will impact Stanford and BCS at-large.
SC vs. UCLA - Winner will be the Pac-12 South rep in the Pac-12 CG.
Notre Dame vs. SC - ND will be playing for the BCS CG. I think SC is the more talented team, but the game will mean more to ND.
and?
Texas vs. Kansas State - If K-State falls, Notre Dame would have a good chance at the BCS CG.
The Pac-12 CG - If Oregon is the North representative they MUST win because if they were upset Stanford would be Alamo bound.
In the end, I think I want UCLA to beat SC. Lots of reasons
I think I want SC to beat Notre Dame. ND in the BCS CG probably would help Stanford Rose Bowl chances, but I want the Pac-12 to get that one.
And I would want Texas to be K-State. Texas would then clog up a BCS 14 slot and Oregon would be then seem to be a lock for the BCS CG.
The Stanford team can "ruin" all of this by winning in Eugene on Saturday. Go Card!
In an unrelated story...How is it possible that Texas A&M is doing so well in the SEC? I believe if the SEC was so much better than every other conference, then some former middle tier Big 12 team should be getting punished. The idea that Texas A&M can keep winning, I think suggests that pollsters view of the SEC might need an adjustment.

A&M last year was a team the stat people loved--they lost close when they did lose against a really tough schedule. (Interestingly, stat people also loved ND last year. Score a couple for the Nate Silvers of the college football world.)
Anyway, all the speculation about ND to Rose Bowl ignores the fact that the Rose Bowl once took a 9-3 Illinois team coached by Ron Zook to preserve tradition. I don't think they'll have a brobdingnagian problem taking us.

After next week, the number of options will perhaps be reduced to a comprehensible number, but even, the games have to be played. And if we don't win the conference, then we have no claim on the Rose Bowl. Any team besides the Big 10 and Pac-12 champions is an arbitrary selection.
Absolutely true. But boy how fun is it for us to realistically be in the discussion for a BCS bowl at this point of the season.

Bama in the BCS CG took a hit, but Bama in a BCS bowl did not.
Today it is fairly clear. Bama will take one BCS Bowl slot, Georgia will take one too.
At the moment, 5 slots are virtually taken.
Bama
Georgia
Kansas St
Notre Dame
Oregon
The 5 other slots are getting clearer too.
ACC winner - Several options (but likely Florida State)
BigEast winner - Louisville or Rutgers
BigTen winner - Nebraska or some super lucky Leaders team
Big12 #2 - Texas or Oklahoma
#10 Slot - Pac-12 #2 Stanford, SC or UCLA vs ACC #2 (if in the 14, and therefore must be either Florida State or Clemson)
There are ~20 teams with possibilities, and Stanford is in the mix. Nice to be able to play the what if game in mid November.
