Just to keep heads up--
This has been a week of utterly mind-boggling upsets in women's b-ball. Just today, you have #9 Ohio State (okay, I know they're almost always overrated, but still...) losing at unranked Minnesota by 11. And you have #18 Georgetown just destroying visiting #12 Rutgers 54-36.
But possibly the biggest upset in years? On Thursday, #7 Maryland gets beaten AT HOME by not only unranked but just plain bad Virginia Tech 75-69. Tech was 6-14 going into the game, and had lost 5 games in a row while failing to break 50 points in any of them. They also shot 38% and still managed to beat the homestanding Terps, who a lot of people were touting as a darkhorse Final 4 team a couple of weeks back.
And tomorrow, you're likely to see one more blowout - I'm not sure Duke can stay with UConn, even at home.
We may not be on the level of Baylor, the Irish or the Huskies (at least not without a healthy Nneka), but no one else is either. Through my admittedly Cardinal colored glasses, I think Stanford should be either the #3 or #4 one-seed (and I won't be convinced about the Irish until they win a tough one on the road or at a neutral court (vs. the Huskies at the end of the season, most likely).

Awesome post Griffin!
Your points about Lindy playing make sense and follow Tara's philosophy of using an experienced player over one with less experience, even if they have better skills - at times.

add that USF (south florida) hung very well vs. UConn, at UConn. Jan. and Feb. are like August dog days in baseball. It's a long season and teams often hit the wall around this time and don't play as sharp. MD is a helter skelter team, who I expect to see in Fresno regional.
I'll say UConn by 7 over Dook.

Penn State just got knocked off too. It is just really, really hard to avoid upsets let alone keep these long winning streaks alive. I think Gino was actually somewhat relieved when his team's came to an end. A few more points:
C.al has lost 4 games to ranked teams by a total of nine points. They can play.
I have been very critical of Lindy's defense, especially her lack of lateral movement against quick guards. However, I agree that she was an important contributor yesterday. Specifically, she noticed teammates being beaten, and played some excellent help defense. She knows what she is doing running the offense, and is vocal directing some of the younger players. She did begin to sag too far back in the middle allowing jump shooters to get too close, and she telegraphs her entry passes, so I'm still not thrilled when she gets big minutes. She may be limited physically, but she is intelligent on the court, and hustles, so maybe she's earned her PT.
I would put Stanford at #4. I expect them to get to Denver, but it by no means feels inevitable as it sometimes did last year. I can see them beating either UConn or Notre Dame on a neutral court, but it does seem to be shaping up as a battle for #2 behind Baylor.
Depth is certainly becoming an issue this year due to injuries. I thought the problem in the post this year would be getting playing time for everyone who deserved it.
Jasmine and Alex will be red shirt eligible (is that the correct phrasing?) so they might be around for sometime. Toni is just a sophomore. I'm much more worried about losing Nneka than I am Lindy. ;) I confess that I couldn't see how they would replace Candice, and I couldn't see how they would replace Jayne (ditto for Kayla and Jeanette) but somehow they keep putting a first rate team on the court. Maybe, just maybe, Tara's in the Hall of Fame for a reason!
Re: WBB: Stanford 74 C.AL 71 OT - treefan - 01-29-2012
Yeah, I assume Camp and Green will both red shirt. Add Ruef to that mix too.
Tara has done a masterful job at recruiting and also playing 2 guards at the point, mostly due to all the injuries we've had at the pg over the years. When was the last time we had a true point guard running the show? JJ Hones pre and post ACL?
Had Jamie Carey, Susan King, JJ, Ros, Mel Murphy, now Camp and Green stayed healthy...... and if Diggins signed with Stanford instead of the Catholics, or if Danielle Robinson came here vs. Sooners...... I know, coulda, shoulda, woulda.. but my pt is given all this bad luck, Tara and her staff have done an amazing job and we can expect them to make the adjustments this year and next year post Nneka.

OK, to sum up what I learned from this board and some extra sleuthing when this came up a couple weeks ago....
Any player who takes a year off for any reason can be said to automatically redshirt--meaning that they simply don't use a year of eligibility. There isn't even a form to fill out. (A second such year based on injuries does require paperwork.) The decision by Stanford on whether to given them a scholarship in their 5th academic year is a separate matter, determined during their 4th academic year by the coaches, "for the good of the team."Â
Basically, Tara will get to decide in Jasmine's and Alex's fourth year on the farm whether to spend one of the team's scholarships on bringing them back for a fifth season. I presume she will make that decision based on how well they have played during their healthy years and how much the team needs them. Otherwise, like Michelle Harrison, they can play a fifth year somewhere else.Â
(Oh, and someone coming back for a fourth year of athletic eligibility during a fifth academic year has to be working on a degree--that is why so many in that position enroll in Master's programs. They would, however, have to apply and be accepted into a Stanford MA program, which is not necessarily a gimme depending on the program and on the academic success of the player.)
Of course, Tara could make promises or commitments before that year, but I don't think she does that. Amy Tucker told us a few weeks back that the decision was made during their senior year.
Re: WBB: Stanford 74 C.AL 71 OT - treefan - 01-29-2012
Thanks '81. I'm aware of the NCAA redshirt rules, basically 5 years to play 4 if you play less than 20% in one year. As you noted, nothing is guaranteed as the team's line-up, academics and player's personal decision (health and ability) to stay and play the 5th yr. It was an assumption on my part re: Camp and Green redshirting given they are talented frosh guards, an area where we always need help.

Two different rules --
1. You have five years to play four.
2. If you play fewer than 30% of the scheduled games in a year (formerly 20%, now 30%), and if all of those games are in the first half of the season, and if you miss the rest of the season due to injury, then that year doesn't count ("medical redshirt").

One of these days her stroke will return, and our offense will have a new dimension.
Agreed. Last year Lindy had an outstanding season, hitting .386 from three point range while playing 19 minutes a game. This year she is hitting .247 while playing 24 minutes. Sooner or later she will return to form. I wonder if there is anything the coaches can do to help it be sooner. How do you practice something that tends to be so streaky? I get the feeling that this is more about sports psychology than mechanics.

The new AP poll show Stanford at #4, as expected. Tennessee is at #8 after a solid win at Georgia. So, that still counts as a statement game.
I don't know what to make of Lindy's drop off, because her shot looks good to me leaving her hand. One thing is that the line is farther back this year, but I can't believe that's a factor with the range she's showed in the past. Another is that both she and Bonnie have launched 3's from well behind the line. Perhaps Bonnie has that range, and Lindy doesn't?Â

I don't think Lindy is taking her shots from deeper this year than in previous years. I think she might have sped up her release some. However, she's been missing even wide-open 3's with plenty of time to set up. It's a puzzle.

After watching the second half of the Dook-UConn game tonight, I feel a lot better about the Cardinal performance on Saturday. The Blue Devil bricklayers outdid our poor shooting big time, and the Huskies' weakness at the point was glaringly evident. In fact, the Bare-Cardinal game was arguably a better played game all around, and certainly more entertaining (Tara is correct that it should have been televised). UConn has a fleet of thoroughbreds at the 2 and 3 positions, but beside being weak at the point, they looked vulnerable to quick inside players (can you say Griner or the Sisters O). Dook's stinko offensive performance tonight (Bares would have beaten them) probably sewed up a #1 seed for the Cardinal barring any shocking upset, and it was nice to see that Geno & crew look eminently beatable. Â
Re: WBB: Stanford 74 C.AL 71 OT -
Mike - 01-31-2012
This is my first post on any board, and I'm posting because of the assumption above that Mikayla will be red-shirted. I have no special insight into our recruiting plans, but I've gleaned the following information from the Hoopgurlz site:
2012 / 5-star / 96 rating / 6-3 P / #12-ranked recruit, #4-ranked P / Alyson Beebe - Santa Maria, CA
2012 / 4-star / 92 rating / 6-5 P / outside "Top 100" , #14-ranked P / Tess Picknell - Medford, OR
Comment: The class of 2013 appears to have a good number of excellent recruits who would be academically eligible for admission to Stanford. If Sarah Boothe were to be red-shirted, we will have 14 on the roster (13 otherwise), and her participation would not affect the number of players we could recruit from the 2013 class. Of course, there is always a chance that someone could be added to next year's roster who is not now on Hoopgurlz's radar, or a walk-on could be added. However, that does not appear likely, given the excellence and number of 2013 players we appear interested in right now (again, according to Hoopgurlz).
2013 / 5-star / 96 rating / 6-2 F / #4-ranked recruit, #1-ranked F / Taya Reimer - Indianapolis, IN
2013 / 4-star / 95 rating / 6-2 F / #15-ranked recruit, #3-ranked F / Stephanie Mavunga - Brownsburg, IN
2013 / 4-star / 92 rating / 5-9 PG / #55-ranked recruit, #14-ranked PG / Christen Inman - Katy, TXÂ (Note: apparently an exeptionally intelligent, quick and athletic PG!)
2013 / 4-star / 92 rating / 6-2 W / #60-ranked recruit, #11-ranked W / Peyton Whitted - Suwanee, GA
Comment: These four players are listed as "under consideration" by Stanford. The top 3 have Stanford listed first in the list of schools the players are considering. I don't know if that order was determined by the player or by Hoopgurlz, but I hope it indicates the players' preference. Peyton Whitted had Stanford listed second, after Auburn. If Mikayla Ruef were to be re-shirted, it would take away a possible roster spot for one of the above players. Also, another top player, not listed in Hoopgurlz's list of players Stanford is interested in for 2013, is making an unofficial visit to Stanford in the near future:
2013 / 4-star / 95 rating / 6-1 F / #19-ranked recruit, #5-ranked F / Sydney Umeri - Acworth, GA
Again, if Mikayla does not red-shirt, we would have room for all four players for whom Stanford is listed as showing interest. Of course, interest from Stanford is not confirmation that these smart and talented young ladies will decide to play for the Cardinal, but I hope four of the above five wind up here.Â
Hoopgurlz also shows Stanford's interest in the 2014 class as follows:
2014 / 4-star / 91 rating / 6-3 F / #11-ranked F / Imani Littleton - La Mesa, CA (She was also referred to as Imani Littlejohn in one of their articles.)
Earlier in the year, another player we had been interested in, Kelli Kingma, declared for Washington. She was the 11th-ranked PG at the time. In another Hoopgurlz article, it was stated that Courtney Ekmark was interested in Stanford (or vice-versa, I forget).
2014 / 4-star / 92 rating / 6-0 G / #9-ranked G / Courtney Ekmark - Phoenix, AZ (She's starts on the #1-ranked H.S. team in America!)
The upshot of all the above: We will continue to be a tall team for some time. Our team will be increasingly athletic. There are not many Gs/PGs under consideration - maybe we're going to evolve into point-forwards! In any case, it appears Stanford will continue to be relevant in any discussion of top college teams. Go Card!

What a good first post, with some interesting and useful information, Mike.
Someone posted a while back that we probably will save a scholarship this year to spend next. That is we have three graduating seniors (Lindy, Nneka, and Grace) and only two incoming frosh (Alyson Beebe and Tess Picknell.) So next season we will probably go with a roster of 14 scholarship players.
Then in 2013 Boothe will complete her 4th year of eligibility. I think your math is right--with Joslyn graduating and the extra slot, we will have a total of 3 scholarships for 2012-13 if Ruef is given a fifth year, 4 if she is not.Â
Whether Tara decides to offer Ruef a 5th year of scholarship in that year might hinge on how Ruef plays when she gets healthy and whether or not all 4/5 of those high school juniors stay interested in Stanford, put us first, get admitted, and continue to look good as basketball players. As you say, none of which is certain. I think the odds are pretty good for Ruef getting a fifth year, but there could be scholarship congestion (that Boothe does not face) during Ruef's potential fifth year.
By the way, Taya Reimer would be fantastic--but she is being considered by the University of South Bend and Connecticut and comes from Indiana. I wonder how firm her preference is for Stanford.
By the way, when do the younger Ogwumike sisters begin to show up on the radar, or do they?
Re: WBB: Stanford 74 C.AL 71 OT -

One note: Hoopgurlz folks have said the order in which schools are listed for a recruit is meaningless. Just an artifact of their software.

I found this on Taya Reimer--an interview from June of last year.
http://sportsxpress.xanga.com/751375171/sports-xpress-recruiting-xclusivetaya-reimer/
Reimer says "at this point I'm pretty open, I haven't really narrowed down the list. But there are certain things about each school that stands out to me....
When schools get back in session Reimer says "I do plan to make some campus visits in the fall, revisiting a few schools on my list (Notre Dame,UCONN, and Georgia) and also going to a couple schools I haven't been to yet (Duke and Stanford) as well as hopefully some others into the season so I can go to games."
Taya says "I don't have a time table, but I don't plan on dragging out my decision." And when it comes to what she wants she says "I want to go to a school where I will play and make an impact, where we will be competitive and challenging for a national title every year and also where I will have the chance to play with some girls I know from AAU and the USA National team." Basketball isn't the only thing on Taya's mind when it comes to choosing a school as she says "I want to go to an academically strong school.
Does anyone know if she has visited Stanford as she said she might in the Fall? From what I can tell, she visited Notre Dame and Connecticut in October, and the UConn board is fully of speculation as to whether they can beat out Stanford for her.Â
Her comment on an academically strong school certainly sounds promising.

1. To the other posters, thank you for the welcome. I was unaware of the CARDboard until links were posted this year on the StanfordFBC site. I enjoy (and learn from) your comments.
2. A thank-you for discovering that the school preferences of the recruits that HoopGurlz lists are randomly entered. Good to know going forward.
3. An answer to the question about the third and fourth Ogwumike sisters, but as a part of the rest of what I've read about Stanford recruiting and prospects from 2011-2015:
2011 - I don't know if anyone noticed, but Alex Green, who was the last of the six 2011 class members to be admitted, had only one school listed that she was interested in - Stanford. I don't recall ever seeing only one school listed for any other recruit in all the time I've been perusing HoopGurlz's site. It appears she was not to be deterred in where she wanted to go. I like that. Good for Alex!
2012 - 3-star recruit / 88 rating / #85-ranked G / 6-2 Elleson Tinkle -- We had/have a 2012 roster spot open, but Joselyn's sister committed to Gonzaga.
2013 - 3-star recruit / 90 rating / #31-ranked G / 5-11 Karlie Samuelson -- We already have more 5- and 4-star players-of-interest than we have openings for in the 2013 class, so it does not currently look like we plan on recruiting Bonnie's next-oldest sister.
2014 - 3-star recruit / 88 rating / #20-ranked F / 6-0 Olivia Ogwumike -- HoopGurlz states that she's developing but doesn't yet show the skills or "bounce" of her older sisters.
2015 - 6-2 W / Katie Lou Samuelson -- HoopGurlz states that she has the potential to be the best of the Samuelson sisters. I don't know about her academics, but if they're up to snuff, I'm sure we're tracking her basketball progress.
2016 - Erika Ogwumike is in the 8th grade right now, but I haven't come across anything about her basketball skills or progress.

Great update on all the little sisters, Mike!  Nneka was asked about her little sisters recently and said that Olivia is similar to her in how she plays and Erica is similar to Chiney. IIRC, Nneka said that Erica might be the best of them all.
Didn't know about the upcoming Samuelson sisters, could be fun to watch them.

I just found Erica's stats for her freshman year in high school so far.
http://www.maxpreps.com/athletes/j-5UnZT0HEGIhgFgkQ-Dcg/girls-basketball-winter-11-12/stats-erica-ogwumike.htm
She is playing for a different high school than her sisters attended. I don't know anything about high school basketball, but I think those stats look pretty impressive for such a youngster.
