Well, I got a better stream in the second than the first, and I disagree with the take--the three point shots were typically though not always the result of moving the zone around, followed by an in-rhythm three point attempt. The shots were just missed. One sequence that was particularly memorable was--Randle misses an open corner three; offensive rebound, passes; Gage misses an open corner three; offensive missed rebound, missed two. Open corner threes are like the second-best shot in basketball; missing two--particularly when two accomplished shooters are taking them--is unfortunate. Sometimes the shots don't fall, offensively speaking.

I blame Dawkins for his poor use of timeouts and odd lineup management. At some point he really has to give up on Zimmerman and Mann. They just aren't good.

Thanks for the detailed description.  From the internet, all you can really sense (or at least all I perceived) was the disappearance of Owens, and a constant stream of missed 3-pointers as we fell further and further behind.

Re: MBB Halftime: Stanford 29 WSU 27 - Renaissance Man - 01-20-2012

Zimmerman has played well very often this year, his biggest problem being a propensity to pick up ticky-tack fouls early in the game.  I agree that Mann is a liability more often than not, but he does, at times,  have a settling presence when the team is struggling.  I am not sure that I understand the problem with Heustis and Mann being on the floor at the same time? I was unable to follow the game, but it sounds like a replay of the Oregon game, with Owens dominating for a half, then being taken away for the second half.

Per the box score, Huestis was 0 for 0 shooting 3s last night.

33 3s?  What is this team doing taking 33 3s?

Owens is 8-8 from the field and we shoot 33 3s?

Early in the season, this was a team that drove aggressively to the basket and as a result shot a high percentage and got to the line a lot.  Not so much anymore.

Gave up 52 pts. in the last 17 minutes.  Dawkins often talks about this being a defense first team; maybe that doesn't apply in the Palouse?

Re: MBB Halftime: Stanford 29 WSU 27 - Renaissance Man - 01-20-2012

One of the hardest things for a coach to do with a young team is decide how much freedom to give them.  Asking Huestis and Brown (who has only a slightly better three-point percentage than Huestis) to stop or reduce their shooting is dangerous--players who are wondering if they should take a shot are usually a liability.  If they are shooting well in practice, I imagine they have a green light and Dawkins is trying to get the entire team to understand situational decision-making.  I am surprised that Huestis attempted none of the 33 3s, coming off of his 2/3 game vs. Colorado.

Re: MBB Halftime: Stanford 29 WSU 27 - Scooter_Stepford - 01-20-2012

I have heard that there are two players that have a green light, although with his recent success Randle might have been added.  Neither Brown nor Huestis are in that select group.

Agree re: Brown.  He's a great mid-range shooter, but he seems to have forgotten that part of his game and either tries to get to the rim (with limited success) or fires from deep (also with limited success.)

Those were the days!! Thanks for the link, Spiny. Nice to see Josh Childress in Cardinal, too. Hope he can revive his NBA career. He seems to be in the permanent doghouse in Phoenix.
