From the article:
A 6-foot-7, 275-pound tackle, he anchored the Class 5A champion Eagles offensive line until suffering a season-ending ankle injury in the state quarterfinals.
Despite the injury, Davidson said, his scholarship offer from Stanford was never in doubt.
Probably reading too much into this -- since conventional wisdom is that all guys his age view themselves as immortal -- but perhaps, even allowing for the fact that he sounds like he was primarily interested in Stanford all along, there was at least a brief moment when he contemplated the possibility that, at some point in the future, the phrase "season-ending...injury" might become "career-ending injury," and, in the unfortunate event that might happen, having a Stanford degree might be the best alternative.
Or, perhaps, Toby Gerhart's been doing a little marketing/PR in Minn for the Tunnel Workers' Union...

California people are convinced Aziz Shittu will announce he is committing to California at the Army game, even if he is admitted to Stanford.Â
My guess is Stanford adds Garnett and Murphy and Peat goes to Nebraska or the University of South Central. Then they take Cyburt if he is admitted.

He may commit to Kal, but that begs the question as to why he has been waiting so long and attended so many Stanford events.
Perhaps he just enjoys the recruiting process.
I am still hopeful of getting Peat, but I get the impression he wants a school that is a little more rah-rah football than he perceives Stanford as being.
If we do get two of the three of Peat, Garnett, and Murphy, we should be very happy. (At least I know I will).

Shittu's H.S. coach is a California grad and a Stanford grad, IIRC. He and California recruiters have convinced Aziz that though California has a lower entrance standard for athletes than Stanford, it is just as if not more academically rigorous than Stanford. So Aziz Shittu is one recruit that doesn't buy the Stanford academic superiority argument. And he really likes DL coach Tosh Lupoi.
That said, Stanford is still Stanford, and like it or not, though a California degree is impressive, a Stanford degree can open more doors post graduation. And it is quite curious that someone would visit Stanford so many times if he wasn't interested. From what I can gather, Shittu's parents may have pushed him to get admitted to Stanford so it would be an option for him. I've yet to hear if Shittu has been admitted or not, and though I know California people are convinced he is going to Berkeley, I still am not 100% convinced.Â

C.a....l is a fine school. Despite all of the budget cuts that are sure to move it down the USNews rankings soon, it is still in the top 25. And in 2013 or 2014 it almost certainly will have a higher "Total Cost" list price for out-of-state students to attend than Stanford, so clearly the Regents must think it is a great place. However, C.a...l football players do not graduate at the same rate as the student body.
C...a...l lurkers proudly point to the sink or swim philosophy that emerges from the lack of resources, available classes, etc. And that is fine for a 20 year old with time to spare and demanding parents. Football players don't have that time, so it seems too many of them sink in the system. If I was lucky enough to have a D-1 athlete as an offspring, I would push for the school with academic resources to spare and a track record of helping athletes get a degree.
My guess is that C.a....l has already started to imply that their new student athlete study facility will improve the football graduation rates. My guess is that it probably will only help offset the increasing scheduling and resources challenges created by the budget problems.
Oh, and FWIW, I suspect that with this group of linemen on both sides of the ball, Stanford Football will be winning more than C.a...l too.

It's interesting to see the mentality of the C.al fan base changing with the new facilities they're getting. For years, they've held it against Stanford students in general, and athletes in particular, that Stanford is a country club where you are pampered in the extreme. Now they have their "football field weight room" and shiny new facilities, they're excited that they have the better resources to serve athletes on a silver platter. Does that mean a degree from Cal will be worth less than it was before, since so much of it was based on the gumption you needed to get through the bureaucracy and fight through the red tape to complete the classes you need for graduation?
