They’ll have their first test of the season tonight against #14 Georgetown. It will be interesting to see who starts.

Well, within 10 minutes of the game Stanford went up 2-0 with goals by Kral and Kohler. The latter with a beautiful assist by Boamah.

Stanford won 2-0, outshooting Georgetown 9-4, (4-1 on goal), so although I didn’t watch, the score seems to have reflected the game.

Technical difficulties resulted in neither goal being televised. Frankly the quality of the broadcast was terrible even after the broadcast started including sound that had the announcers sounding like they were in a phone booth and far too many close camera shots. The whole game also looked very jittery on my TV.
Yes I am annoyed.
I think the lineup was the same as the last game. Stanford likes to flip forward sides in game; so I am not sure that I have Kral and Thomas on the correct sides.
Goals early by Kral and Kohler, but again the broadcast showed neither.
- looks like Kral blew her hamstring. Not good. R/LF depth is a big concern right now. Thomas didn’t show much again and Grilione remains a turnover machine. Munneke looks like the next woman up for now.
- Smith remains a concern on defense. She got beat behind in the first half and Georgetown should have scored. Almost got beat again in the second and picked up a card while salvaging the play. Neither outside back is as fast as you would prefer, but Freer covers better.
- weird to have the CBs be faster then the OBs. But it does make sense to have Boamah at CB with this lineup.
- Nguyen is so smooth with the ball. She is only ok on defense, but she is something else triggering the offense. That isn’t a new revelation….
- Johnson hasn’t had much of an impact in the first 2 games.
- Young had a really shaky section in the second half with 3 bad plays on the ball in a very short stretch.
- in the 70ish minutes shown, Stanford was better but not dominantly so. The first 10-15 minutes though were apparently all Stanford.

This team will look vastly different when players leave for the U20 World Cup. Jota and Klinger joining the England squad and Tay for Ghana. Thats six players so far, possibly more with Murdock.
The team will only have one GK available. Luckily Stanford has Stewart, grad transfer from Harvard.

Yup. Appreciated. But yeah it doesn’t replace the first 10+ minutes of the game. Like why is Boamah so far forward from CB on the Kohler goal?

Maybe we should hope for technical difficulties for all our matches? Like last time, we’ve gone up 2-0 early with goals at the 7th (Winn, assisted by Koehler) and 14 (Holden, unassisted). And now a third goal (Boahmah, assisted by Nguyen). 10-0 in shots, 5-0 in shots on goal.

Six different players scored. Goalkeepers (and we played three) could almost have taken the day off; Stewart had one save, and that was it in terms of work for the GKs.

A seismic result elsewhere as Florida State falls to Florida 3-1. That was their first non-conference loss since 2019, the first loss to Florida since 2015, and their first loss by multiple goals in non-conference since 2003.
Quite the story.
The ACC has not had the best start in the non conference season. #5 Michigan State beat #7 UNC today, San Diego and Pepperdine stole games from Cal, Clemson really should've beat South Carolina, Notre Dame started out the season ranked #2, but has drawn with Samford, Nebraska, and Penn State.
It'll be interesting to see how things evolve from here.

Also without Ella Kral and still without Mia Bhuta and Sophie Murdock. That's potentially 7 starter-level players unavailable, plus additional depth lost to the U-20s. And Stanford didn't just survive the absences—it controlled the game. Stanford's 3–0 win was its largest regular-season victory over UCLA in 15 years (UCLA hasn't beaten Stanford by 3+ goals since 2000). Stanford is really justifying its #1 ranking.
Other things that stood out for me:
- The Harvard grad transfer GK Rhiannon Stewart really stepped up. With both Birkel and Jota at the U20 WC, Stewart got the shutout, including a big diving save in the 72nd minute. She was appropriately aggressive and stopped some goals from developing. I got a little panicked when she got kicked in the head on one play (who even is her backup?) but I feel much more confident about the next month seeing her confidence in goal last night.
- Freshman Sadie Leal-Schuman continues to emerge. Two assists, including the free kick that fed Holden for her header goal. It's good to see a quality set piece with Nguyen out at the WC. Leal-Schuman did well in the midfield generally though is not as strong as Nguyen there (few in the country are).
- It looked like Ratcliffe moved Kohler back to defensive mid in the second half, which settled things down defensively. Because of that I didn't expect her to score this game, but she came through. She now has 10 points in 4 games, with two of those games against ranked teams. Last season, Aikey led all of Division I with 53 points in 25 games. Kohler's current 25-game pace would be 62-63 pts. A blazing start!
- The defense may be the most encouraging part. Without Lizzie Boamah and with a freshman and sophomore starting at center back (and a first-time Stanford starter in goal), Stanford held UCLA to five shots and got another clean sheet (its 4th straight to open the season). And with Freer replacing Boamah at center back, Ratcliffe needed to find another outside back. He chose freshman Aniya Williams, who had only played her first college minutes in the prior game against Irvine. She played the first 75 minutes before Noe Johnson replaced her. She was an early enrollee last spring which seems to have been big in helping with her readiness. Ella Emri subbed for Lily Freer in the final 5 minutes. She has looked good, and is a former starter, but may not be fully fit yet after her serious injury 2 seasons ago.
- Forward Bella Winn is looking more and more like she could be a true superstar for Stanford. Her game-winning goal last night was spectacular. She controlled the ball off of her thigh and, before it hit the ground, half-volleyed it with her left foot into the goal, all while running toward the goal. That is a unique level of athleticism. In a nice bit of symmetry, Winn was the player that scored the game-winner for UCLA against Stanford last season. I'm glad she's with us now. Winn also played a big role in helping out defensively. Her work rate was off the charts.
- I am more and more impressed with Holden. She repeatedly muscled her way through the UCLA defense with 2 or 3 players on her. I have no idea how she kept possession on those plays. I've always been high on Holden. The summer before her freshman season she won WPSL SoCal Offensive Player of the Year, beating out Duke star Mia Minestrella. She was 4th in goals per 90 for Stanford last year, despite playing mostly with backups around her. She could be key to our success this season.
- This team is full of talented underclassmen and they are all stepping up. We've still got lots of tough games on the schedule but this is a very encouraging start.

I do have a question, though. At 10:08 in the first video above the UCLA defender intentionally passes the ball to her goalkeeper, who scoops up the ball with her hands. Why wasn't Stanford awarded an indirect free kick? It looked to me like the defender clearly kicked the ball with her foot (as opposed to her shin).
