RE: 2025 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships - Nobadeer - 08-02-2025

Finally got to watch the replay of the Saturday finals. W 800m was a terrific race. Ledecky is the Goat! Hard to believe she took time out of the training cycle to speak at the LSJU commencement.

And per BobK, yes, Huske and teammates set a world record in winning the 4x100 mixed freestyle relay!

Love the version of the national anthem being played at the medal ceremonies - it's apparently by Peter Breiner and the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra.

Yet another silver medal for Regan Smith, 200 back. That's 4 in this meet, to go with 2 or 3 at Paris.

In the prelims just concluded tonight USA time, Manuel again anchored a relay to a top time in the heats, this time the W 4x100 mixed medley. Huske will likely sub in for her in the finals early tomorrow morning USA time.

Ledecky won the 800 m free by fractions of a second.  McIntosh actually fell to third despite gaining a brief lead after 700 m.

I have never seen Ledecky so exhausted at the end of a race.

Apparently the food poisoning isn't only affecting the Americans.  Here's one Australian swimmer that says she lost 11 pounds in "48 hours of hell". The article also mentions a British swimmer and another Australian.

Rowdy Gaines expressed frustration that USA Swimming hasn't had a CEO for a year.  But he had good words about Greg Meehan.

Another world record for Huske and teammates (incl Manuel who swam in the heats) in the 4x100 medley relay. Great finish to the meet for Team USA, 9 golds to 8 for Australia and easily the most medals overall.

Greg Meehan finally looking somewhat pleased. I'm guessing the team will not be holding any future training camps at that resort in Thailand!

Yeah - if ever offered that option again, USA Swimming should emphatically say, "Thailand?!?!? Phuket!"

....sorry, it's late here & couldn't resist

The irony when it comes to Smith and her Aussie rival Kaylee McKeown, is that McKeown often wins their individual match-ups, but when it comes to relays, Smith usually always comes out on top. So it's not like McKeown is a better backstroker than Smith... I think it is highly dependent on whether it's for an individual or team medal.

Prior to the swim meet, there was water polo in Singapore. The men's team, without superstar LSJU alum Ben Hallock, won their first three matches, then lost their last three, including the 7th place match by 9-8 to Italy. Team USA finished 8th out of 16 teams. LSJU alum Dylan Woodhead, rising junior Ryan Ohl and incoming freshman Connor Ohl were on Team USA.

The women's team, once the dominant program globally, again failed to podium. After lopsided wins over lightweight foes China, Argentina and Japan, Team USA lost to Greece in the quarterfinals 14-10 and then to Spain 13-12 in the bronze medal match. There were at least 4 LSJU players on the roster, Dylan Woodhead's sister Ella, plus Ryann Neushal, Jewel Roemer and Jenna Flynn. The 4th place finish mirrors last summer's 4th place at the Paris Olympics.

Were those expected results for the men's side?  What are the major factors behind the women's fall from dominance?

RE: 2025 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships - Nobadeer - 08-08-2025

LSJU bias, but I think both teams were missing their superstar LSJU alums - Hallock on the men's side, and Steffens and the Fischer sisters for the women's team - all are world class players whose replacements are of course, world class too, but at that level the extra bit of talent and skill can make the difference in a sport where most medal round matches are decided by a goal or two.

Thanks for that insight.  Sometimes that "next [one] up" philosophy only goes so far when you're talking about transcendental talents at the very top of the game.

I didn't realize how deeply the beef goes between USA Swimming and some of their luminaries:

Former Stanford head coach Greg Meehan is now the National Team Managing Director for USA Swimming, which is currently taking a bit of flak.
