Wow is that a bad charge call. As was the 4 pt play where UL jumped way forward.

Still more turnovers than baskets.  Demetre at -17 worst +/- in the game so far.

There seem to have been a number of really bad calls.  Unfortunately, we won't be able to blame them for a close loss.

There have been a lot of bad calls. But also a lot of questionable coaching decisions. Bosgana should not be taken out and instead Demetre should. I’d actually keep Bosgana and Ogden in at the same time regardless that they play the same position. What’s the worst than can happen?

Hwy, we are now winning 2 out of the 4 quarters.
Someone will no doubt point to that as a positive.
And, of course, taking the game from a 20 point deficit to a 4 point one was also a positive.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Louisville, Sunday 9am; preview and game thread - 81alum - 02-09-2025

Louisville is not creative with its defense.  It has borrowed everyone else's successful Stanford-killing D.  That is, closely guard the three point line and force us to drive, which is certainly not our strong suit.  We are 2/13 from three point range so far today.

We might be an excellent shooting team but we are a poor driving team.  Unfortunately, the opposing defense gets to pick which of those two options it will let us be.  And the choice is obvious.

A 7 point game now with a little more than 3 minutes left.  Our players deserve credit for scratching there way into this one.

We cut it to 4 and Jayda Curry get a basket and 1.  Ugh.

This is exactly the type of fight and effort that’s been missing. So kudos for the effort and fight in this game despite the loss. If we played this way with Agara, we would not be a below 0.500 team. Where has this been? I think the quicker offense and faster tempo is to our advantage. We also forced more turnovers than normal in this game. I like Stevenson and she showed she can help us more with more minutes.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Louisville, Sunday 9am; preview and game thread - 81alum - 02-09-2025

Well, following the Notre Dame beat-down, our players did not give up.  They played hard without their best player.  That made it close.

Demetre 1-9.

Now they come home and have some winnable games.  Maybe we can finish the season from hell on a positive note.  Maybe even make it to purgatory.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Louisville, Sunday 9am; preview and game thread - petersalas - 02-09-2025

I wish we could see the 4th quarter Stanford team a lot earlier in the games. I don’t know why they play that way trying to claw their way back to lose the game anyway. If they played that way from the beginning, we’d probably be seeing more wins and fewer losses.

I like Stevenson also, nice to see her have a good game

Yes, pretty good game along with Bosgana.  I'm still trying to figure out whether Stevenson has two first names or uses her middle name.

If it is any consolation Kal is down 21 at half against ND.
37 at the end of Q3.

Yes, that's exactly what I think. We had pride in our defense, rebounded, played more physical, got on the floor for loose balls, sprinted the court...

Didn't we play this way against Kal in Q4 also? Why do we have to wait until we are down 20 to show this kind of effort.

I actually think we showed good effort in the whole first half. The letdown was in the 3rd.

This has been a tough year for a student to take over from the Professor.  Kate needs to find her way and play her brand of Basketball and not try and replicate Tara's style. Following a legend is probably the toughest coaching gig in basketball.

I was thinking Why is it always the third!!??? We've actually done worse in Q2 than in Q3. And better in Q1 and Q2. And we suck in OT.

I didn't see the game. Was it a letdown, or did Louisville just make better halftime adjustments?

Whatever the explanation for this phenomenon, the responsibility for not playing with comparable effort before the 4th quarter is Kate Paye's. One would think that after being outscored by 8 in Q2 the head Coach would rouse the team up during the halftime break to come out and play with much greater intensity in Q3. Instead, we got outscored by 11, effectively making the game unwinnable in Q4, even with a 31 point quarter.

RE: WBB: Stanford 65 Louisville 74 - 81alum - 02-09-2025

There have been quite a few comments over the last couple of games about Kate Paye.  Most everyone is sympathetic to her but a lot of people seem to think the season would have been going better with a different coach.

I disagree.

I think that if TVD does not retire, our record would likely be the same as it is now.  Tara would have fared no better with this team, given the talent, the travel, the defections, and all the rest.  I think Tara was honest and accurate when she said at the time of her retirement "I asked myself if I could do a better job than Kate, and decided the answer was no."  Kate has all the knowledge that TVD posseses, more experience than many head coaches (and a TON more experience than Tara had when she started), and probably relates better to our players and their Stanford environment than Tara did.  What is it that Tara had that Kate did not?  Brink, Iriafen, Jump, and Lepolo.  I really think it is that simple.

Tara also had the benefit of planning schemes around the personnel she knew she was going to have.  Because of the late departures and the Lepolo injury and the new conditions of transfer churn, Kate had to take an inherited offensive scheme and try to make it work with personnel for which it turned out to be ill suited.  I doubt that Tara could have reacted any better to these changes given the time frame.

Now, if Kate is going to be a good or even a great coach, she is going to have to have a skill that Tara lacked or did not need--motivating players to stay.  This year is less than a rebuilding year.  Next year is the rebuilding year, with the long term nucleus of excellence arriving over the summer.  Except if this year's most promising players leave, or if next year's recruits change their mind, then next year will turn into an extension of this year's disaster.

Probably the most important thing for Kate to do is to win at least a few of our remaining games while being upbeat, talking up the improvements on the team, and acting like the future is promising.  Because if she convinces her players of that, it will turn out to be true.  If everyone stays, we will become one of the most talented teams in the nation, and Kate's X's and O's are going to be first rate with all that talent.

The good news is that this is exactly what she seems to be doing.  At least from the pressers and the interaction between her and players that I have witnessed, she is coming across with the right balance of concern, teaching, emotional support, and cheerleading.  Frankly, I did not think I would see this out of her, based on the dozens of chalk talks I watched her host over the years.  But Kate has grown as a coach and I have to believe she has the confidence of her team.  The team seems positive, continues to play hard, and still has smiles.  That is a very good thing in today's environment of program-shopping.

I, for one, am going to wait a good long while and absorb a lot more information before I pronounce judgment on Kate Paye.  My gut tells me she will become a great coach.  She is smarter, more energetic, and more Stanford-centric than even Tara was.  At least, that is what Tara says!  She needs the loyalty of her players and some time.  And who knows, the support of fans in social media might turn out to be helpful too.  There are times when appearances become reality.

Thanks for these reflections.  I agree 100%.  The other advantage that Tara had was decades of experience playing the same schools and coaches in the Pac 12 conference (along with the shift from Pac 10 to Pac 12).  She knew the students from basketball camps and recruiting efforts.  Teams and coaches stayed relatively constant.  Some of these coaches even played for her or were tutored by her.  So Tara was able to observe and dissect play (with the benefit of great assistant coaches) to the point that certain match-ups were almost instinctive in her choices - who to play, who to match up, what are the opposing teams' weaknesses and strengths.  Although Kate has some of that experience and knowledge from her 17 years in the Pac 12/10 but it is of little use to her now - wish it had been more playing Cal but Charmin has a strong team this year.  The board has discussed the many difficulties that Kate has faced this first year at the helm - but this has not been mentioned - scouting new teams (that are turning over year to year) and coaches that we "know" but have not needed to scout so intensively before.
