I guess I'm happy and sad for SMU.

Ha! They are Schroedinger's favorite team. -9 should be Ole Miss, not SMU. I'll correct that.

RE: Men's Golf Spring 2024 - Mick - 05-16-2024

Interesting to note that Stanford had the second most birdies (60), but the fewest pars (148) in the regional tournament. Similarly, Stanford had the second best scoring average on par 4s (4.03), worst average on par 3s (3.25) and 6th (of 14) in par 5s (4.60).

RE: Men's Golf Spring 2024 - Giants - 05-16-2024

Of the 18 athletic programs in the new ACC, 15 have men’s golf programs.  Ten (the most of any conference under the new alignment) made the final 30.  That means a big step up in competition awaits the Cardinal program.

my take.  greens, overall turf and conditioning are much better than in the days of Summerhays, Yates and Schaaf.  and you are right about technology making some differences on how you play the course.  hardest holes today to me are 3, 12, 2 and 6.  in old days, I'd have gone 12, 3, 6 and 18.  technology has made 9, 11 and 15 drivable par 4s for the kids.  the trees on 5, 6 and 12 aren't as bothersome as they were in years past, but trees are now much more grown in on left of 2 and left of 7.  you can't miss long left and get away with it like you used to be able to.  #14 green is more tiered now thanks to the poor reconstruct job by the golf course redesign architects from 25 years.  best hole ever was before the 1981 NCAAs when you had to play right of the trees on 12, with long grass in fairway left.  going right from the back trees brought the creek and trees on the right into.  unfortunately, the grounds crew cut the fairway left right before the tournament.  much safer over there although longer.

Thanks for the run down.  I was a student before the 3, 4, 5 section was redone but played it many times afterwards.  I always thought 6 was the hardest hole, at least for me. It seemed rare for me to be able to get my tee shot into a place I had a shot iinto the green that didn't demand help from the golf gods.
As a student, my friends and I always looked forward to 7, even in those days before power was the name of the game, the hole often became a macho event to see who could cut the corner the most, which of course let to many big numbers.  12 was also another tough hole, if there were any easy ones.

I hope the Men and Women do well the next couple of weeks and thanks again for your thoughts.

I like Texas, Illinois, Vanderbilt and Auburn going into the NCAAs in Carlsbad.

RE: Men's Golf Spring 2024 - Spiny_Norman - 05-23-2024

Even as the kvelling continues over the women winning the national championship, Stanford golf fans can turn their attention back to La Costa starting tomorrow as the men get started.

The Stanford men will be in the 1st group off the 1st tee at 7:02 am. If the course does play easier in the morning with softer greens and less wind, then tomorrow is the day for Stanford to go low. They will tee off Saturday in the afternoon wave. The line up is the same as for regionals - Thorbjornsen, Vilips, Brown, Beber-Frankel, Gao. Stanford is ranked 28th in the country so expectations are low for this tournament. I would be happy if they can be in the top 15 and make the cut after Sunday's round. The hallmark of this team has been inconsistent play. They rarely have been able to sustain good play over the course of a tournament. They might post a good round, then blow up the next day.

Whatever the result, this will be the last appearance on a Stanford team by Michael Thorbjornsen, Karl Vilips and Barclay Brown.

RE: Men's Golf Spring 2024 - SkiBum80 - 05-23-2024

They looked to be big supporters of the women in their final round.
And maybe learned a helpful thing or two about the course.

RE: Men's Golf Spring 2024 - bbm233 - 05-24-2024

The men have finished their first round and did quite well, finishing T-3 (of 15) in the morning wave. Karl Vilips is currently sitting in second place @ -3, with a bogey free round. Thor and Brown doing their part, each with a +2 on the day. Need Beber-Frankel or Gao to play a bit better to feel good about making the 54 hole cut. Lots to improve, but frankly a better result than most would have expected. Let's hope the women's team left a lot of mojo at La Costa for the men to carry on.

All Right Now! Let's keep our La Costa momentum rolling!

RE: Men's Golf Spring 2024 - Spiny_Norman - 05-24-2024

The golf course is set up to be VERY challenging. It is playing over 1200 yards longer for the men than for the women.

I see one key scoring difference already. The par 5s are playing easier for the men. The 4 easiest holes for the men are the 4 par 5s. Stanford needs to play them much better tomorrow. As a team, they were +2 on par 5s, worst in the field so far.

If we have to continue to count a +8 score, no way do we make the match play portion.
Update: Vilips seems to be our only player who can handle the course. Players 4 and 5 are +9 with 5 or 6 holes to go. We have the same number of doubles as birdies plus a bunch more bogies. Hard course but there is no denying that we are only three players deep.
Surprisingly, if it doesn't get too much worse, we might have a shot at the top 15 despite the scores, because we are only 2 strokes out of 10th place.

RE: Men's Golf Spring 2024 - Mick - 05-25-2024

Virginia -2 and in the lead at the moment. Stanford, T6. Arizona, T9. Utah, T21. Cal, T23.

True enough. Stanford is killing it on the par-3s (T4th) and the par-4s (T2nd).

RE: Men's Golf Spring 2024 - martyup - 05-25-2024

Vlips leads the field by 5 strokes through 10 holes in the second round.  However, Stanford has dropped back to 13th as the other guys struggle.

"Struggle" is a nice way to describe 85 and 83. Actually we would be in great shape if only 3 scores counted.

RE: Men's Golf Spring 2024 - Spiny_Norman - 05-25-2024

At least Stanford only fell to 15th today. That means they get to play in the morning wave tomorrow. The chance to make match play is slim. But they can make top 15 and survive the cut. And it’s a big deal for Vilips to be leading the tournament.

RE: Men's Golf Spring 2024 - PVTree - 05-26-2024

Vilips on top of the leaderboard and could become NCAA champion.

So, what exactly is wrong with this team?
