It appears that cutting funding isn't the only prong of attack that a targeted school might expect. A Columbia affiliate has been arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, despite being a permanent resident.

According to the article in your link, the former student was here on a student visa and was a leader in the activities which put Jewish students at risk .. or at least they felt at risk. student Visas are for people who want to come and study. If you are here to make a point, you have to figure out a way to do so without threatening your fellow students.  If this story is accurate, .good riddance .

The harassment of foreign students may not bode well for Stanford's international enrollment and postdocs.

The followup link at the top of the page seems to indicate that he is currently a green card holder. He is also now married to a US citizen. Neither one of which should be necessary for his speech to be protected. And, you know, for his immigration status to be adjudicated with all due process.

Let's nip discussion of Mahmoud Khalil's case.  He's not a Stanford student and even in this nascent discussion the perspective on his arrest is strongly colored by political views.

Believing in due process is not a political view, BC.  It is an American one.

While I would like to agree with you, it seems clear that not everyone shares that view.

Tonight the list of schools is up to 60, and Stanford is in the group.   Badge of honor, I guess since many of the USA's best universities are likely to get on the list sooner or later.

for a department that is supposed to be dissolved they appear to be pretty active

It's on their list of five things they accomplished...

I suppose part of the point of Stanford’s enormous endowment is to maintain independence and withstand whatever pressure it faces from outside sources threatening to cancel funding. I assume most universities with much smaller endowments lack that luxury and will have to bow to certain demands that Stanford won’t. I’ll be interested to see where different universities draw the line.

Mudhead - Mudhead - 03-14-2025

I don’t think it’s too hard to get off the list. Avoid support of designated terrorist groups, protect students who are being threatened because of their race, ethnicity or religion and prevent seizure or destruction of university property , especially by non student “activists”.

As has been suggested, I am not at all sure this is the right forum to argue about immigration policy or the rights of Jewish students.  But if it is, let’s join the issue and have at it. If. It, let’s move on and talk about Stanford athletics instead of figuring out clever ways to talk about what seems to be  a political disagreement .

I second your second paragraph.  Which could have been said without the first.

Cheers,

Thanks. I felt the first was necessary to make the point that there are differences of opinion on the issue and they will be expressed if contra opinions, however legitimate, are a part of accepted comment on this board.  My goal is to cease and desist.  I accept your thought that I may have over egged  the pudding

A non-political factor influencing Stanford and other colleges’ decisions not to expand:

RE: OT: development on Stanford's land - fullmetal - 03-26-2025

I don't think Stanford will ever need to worry about a decline in applicants, thankfully, and that should insulate Stanford from any demographic crisis.  But looming uncertainty in the economy as well as higher costs of borrowing make it a very tough time to invest in expansion.  The financial model of university research may also be nearly wrecked.

it will be interesting to see if there is any change in the number of international applications to Stanford (and others) for the class enrolling in fall 2026 and what the yield is for international applicants admits in the fall of 2025.

RE: OT: development on Stanford's land - fullmetal - 03-26-2025

I do believe that will be impacted, and since international students can't fill out FAFSAs, I wonder how the university's finances will be affected.  Certainly the graduate student population will be affected, but I don't think it'll be a complete wipeout.  I hope not.

RE: OT: development on Stanford's land - Mick - 03-26-2025

Forbes noted that they expect slightly more than a 4% increase in individuals matriculating this fall for the first time. Forbes also noted that before the pandemic, more 16-19 year olds entered the work force; in fact, their unemployment rate decreased to 9.2%, lowest U.R. in 70 years. They anticipate fewer enrollees at community and regional four year colleges thanks to the demographic factors already noted.

Why It’ll Likely Be Easier Getting Into College, Even The Ivy League, This Coming Admissions Cycle

Non-selective schools are already closing. One of my neighbors told me that the CSU system is facing consolidation. Her child goes to Sonoma State, one of the schools under pressure. The UC and CSU systems face a $1 billion shortfall in 2025/2026.

Looks like the CSUs have hit on an interesting way to goose enrollment: No applications. If you fit a certain demographic set (geography and grades, etc.), they will just send you an acceptance letter.

No need to apply: Cal State is automatically admitting high school students with good grades
