Remember when we wondered if Betts could be happy at UCLA given how many "bigs" they had?
Well, with Betts gone, with Bessoir out for the season, with Dugalic and Sontag off to trials, that would theoretically leave 6'4" Izzy Antsey but she has been out a couple of weeks and did not travel to Cal, and 6'4" freshman Amanda Muse. No wonder Close is betting the farm on guard play!
Muse played 4 minutes at Cal so I expect we will see a lot of her today, as the only remaining tall person on the UCLA team. She has not played more than 6 minutes since Pac 12 play began. I doubt if anyone knows if she is any good since there is almost nothing to scout. When you play behind all those other bigs there are not many opportunities. Well, she could get a chance today.
Someone Close praised after the Cal game was 6'2" sophomore forward Christeen Iwuala. She played 18 minutes at Cal, got 4 O-boards, a couple of assists, and was 2/2. I imagine we will see a LOT of her. She will probably start.
My prediction: with the three guards Rice Jones and Osborne carrying nearly all the offense, we can expect to see a lot of 6'0" forward Gabriela Jaquez and 6'2" Christeen Iwuala. If they are unable to defend Brink and Iriafen with them, then we will see Muse come in to absorb some fouls.
Starting lineup I predict:
Jones
Osborne
Rice
Jaquez
Iwuala
This is a small, quick lineup. Muse off the bench for their only height. The only other available bench player would be 5'11" grad student guard Camryn Brown. Brown gave them 14 minutes at Cal. If Jones, Osborne, or Rice get in foul trouble she is it. She is 1/9 from three this year.
There will be two keys to our offense today. First, we need to keep Brink and Iriafen IN the game. The speedy UCLA guards could get them in foul trouble. But if they can BOTH stay out of foul trouble we should be absolutely dominant inside.
Second, we need to be able to get the ball to them. The smaller UCLA lineup will probably front them, so lob passes and and successful three point shots if they are doubled will open it up.
The key on defense--what the heck. Just slow them down. Lepolo on Jones, Jump on Osborne, Bosgana et al on Rice. Just make them work a bit for their points, and hope our inside game will be so dominant that we can outscore them.
The obvious strategy given the situation is for us to RUN RUN RUN and just to exhaust their 7 by the fourth quarter.

Michael Price is at the hotel we’re staying at so I’m sure he’s going to be one of the officials today. As long as it’s not Tiffany Bird.. gosh I hope to never see her call a Stanford game!! She’s worse than Missy!!!

Chance that Missy will call many fouls on UCLA after looking at their bench: 0.003%

I watched Muse play travel a couple of times. Really liked her. We danced with her but didn’t get her or whatever
Liked her better than Cunningham at Arizona.
Is Tiffany Bird the blonde ref? She was hmm not good

Yes, Tiffany Bird is the blond one… I just don’t think she likes Stanford or is their curse… I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again.. she was the common link in all but one loss last year.. it started with the South Carolina game.. both the 2 female refs were on that crew.

Mentioned it before, but a major key for today's game is to limit the ft's for their guards. They love to penetrate and if we get a reffing crew that calls everything in their favor, we could lose. Hoping the team bounces back strong today!!
FYI, FanDuel has Stanford favored by 9.5.

Great start. Halfway through the first and we lead 13-4.
Oh god, is Osborn going to pull a Juju on us?
Our offense is humming so far. That's good news. If we can score, we can beat these Bruins.
Beth Mowan says we've come out with our hair on fire. We lead 21-12 after one quarter. No fouls on Brink or Iriafen. We're killing them in the paint.
Game has switched back to ESPN2

A few minutes into the game and Michael Price already warned Cori Close about all the complaining…

Brink hammered under the boards at the end of the first quarter no call.
First, quarter, one foul on UCLA zero on Stanford. Letting the girls play.

We are up 27-12, shooting 67%. Iriafen with 12 points. Brink with 2 blocks. No fouls on our bigs. Beautiful.

At the half, we lead 45-27. In the first half, we shot 67% overall and 75% from 3. Where was this offense on Friday?
We held UCLA to 29% shooting in the first half.
Our bigs have no fouls.

An almost perfect first half. Love that the refs are letting them play. The game is so much more enjoyable to watch and it benefits our team greatly.
Only 5 FT's for the Bruins so far (all for Jones). Exactly what we want. I don't think they have the firepower to score enough without getting a bunch from the line.
It's really tough for the Bruins to score inside with Brown in the game. Cam just camps out in the middle and protects the rim.
Will be interesting to see if the Bruins come out with more energy in the second half. So far, they are just mailing it in without Betts. Kiki Rice is just jogging around, chewing up minutes.
