We lose 21-18. Very interesting to watch. They had quick guards to pressure us. Iriafen was great. Not much from Demetre or Harriel (both made 1 three) but I think the pressure had something to do with that. We advance to the next round and play again today I thought I heard.

stanford loses 21-19.
fran had 2 from downtown - a nice addition to her already substantial skillset.
iriafen had her way underneath.
demetre was off offensively
harriel looked ok on o and d but not dominant

Schedule if I read correctly shows us as playing 10:50 am Eastern tomorrow since we are 2nd place in Pool B. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong! Really felt like if 3 had played well instead of 2 we would have won- this is good practice for the younger players especially since it shows they need to use their speed and strength and never take a second off! Nonstop action basically.

Interesting format. I was looking at how the play-in round works, and I noticed the 2nd place team in pool B doesn't have to play a play-in game to advance, unlike the other pools. So they have an unfair advantage! Terrible! But oh, that's us. Okay, we'll take it, thanks. :)

Former Baylor and WNBA player Lauren Cox was the difference maker for the opposition, but still barely edged the Stanford women 21-19 in the ten minute game. It was a good test for our gals. Belibi was aggressive and came right out and made two "threes." Kiki had her way in the paint, powered in eight baskets, and had a soft touch on a midrange shot.
Box Score (points made in 3x game/equivalent to points in 5 on 5 play):
Belibi 2-2-1-(1)-1=7 / 9
Iriafen 1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1=8 / 16
Harriel 2=2 / 3
Demetre 2=2 / 3
(Scoring is based on: 2 is a three pointer, 1 is a FG within the arc, (1) is a free throw that counts as 1)
It should be no surprise to Stanford fans that Belibi and Iriafen will be major contributors for Stanford in the coming year!

Yeah early in that game Cox was stopping Iriafen inside but she adjusted and stepped away from the basket to score twice. After that she was more confident and also had Cox defending her less often. This has to be a great learning experience for all, and they are still coursude with other teams. Harriel watching other games very attentively!
Also worth noting that the two real bigs (of TN and K State) are not super mobile so if Betts becomes very mobile she will gain a brobdingnagian edge on the competition.

I'll leave it to Baez87 for full stats (we make a great team!) but overview is we beat TN 17-14. They held initial lead and we kept at it to tie, then move ahead, then let them back in near the end but pulled away again. Belibi consistent on offense and defense (even defending Key), Demetre hit a few 2's to help us take the lead, Harriel aggressive and eventually hit a 2; and Iriafen great last minute especially with a move from the top taking Key to the basket -- scored and got fouled. Note most of TN's scoring was Key, with at least a 3-4 inch advantage over defenders (actually mostly more since Belibi at 6'1" was often defending the 6'6" Key).
We play again at 12:10 Eastern in the second semi-final vs. Rain City Force.

Hurray for the Stanford 3x team who beat Tennessee today to qualify for the 3X National Semifinals. Although the final score, 17-14, looked close, Stanford took it to Tennessee. Tennessee's big, Tamari Key, was held in check by the Stanford defense which included four blocks by Belibi and two blocks by Demetre. Todays game was all about hustle for Stanford, they played hard and smart and deserved to win!
Box Score: (3x points) / (5x5 equivalent)
Demetre — 2+2+2=6 / 9
Belibi — 1+1+1+(1)=4 / 7
Harriel — 1+2+(1)=4 / 6
Iriafen — 1+1+1=3 / 6
(A 3 in 3x counts 2, a field goal counts 1, a free throw (1) counts 1)

If anyone was awake it was also worth watching the prior game: Texafornia (Cox/Kianna Smith) vs. Iowa State (Ashley Joens et.al. all similar heights so switch easily and also lots of outside shooting). This was an excellent game (squeaker by Texafornia) and the announcer solved the mystery of why Stanford was the only 2nd place pool team to not have to play last night (to qualify for quarterfinals this morning): Texafornia is the ringer/USA Basketball choice expected to win so the decision was for fairness purposes.
Stanford just lost -- dug themselves too big a hole at the start (1-10) and started to claw back but just not enough. Belibi had an off offensive game (though some might say she was defended too well). Harriel scored and Iriafen scored and played well. High praise from announcers for Iriafen, who was the youngest player in the tournament.
Just wasn't enough. Interesting that in both semifinals the collegiate team lost.

Kiki had some great offensive rebounds and post moves. Rain City had better shooters and more set plays. We got down early but got back in the game through defense, energy and hustle. The 3 point shot just wasn't there for us this game. I liked what I saw from Harriel though. Seems quick with a good handle.

announcer mentioned he believed Kiki was youngest player in tournament.
Fran a non-factor, shooting too many 3's (many were airballs). but very poor shooting overall

Announcer on livestream even said he wished Fran stayed inside more this game. She probably felt the pressure for outside shots once (1) she was defended well inside on an early play and (2) they allowed the early lead due to a combination of Linnae Harper 2's and other players' inside penetration and easy 1's. But seemed like a great developmental decision to attend. Kara Lawson in a pre-recorded interview commented on how it helps decision making development.

i speculate that fran is practicing her outside shot in competition in case tara wants to use a lineup with 3 bigs. we saw cam shooting from the outside at the end of the season.
i am surprised that rain city scored several times on back-door cuts, but stanford didn't try any. we use that play so often in 5x5.

The youngest player in the 3X National at 18, Kiki Iriafen, made her mark in a losing cause. Kiki scored seven points and played tough against the Rain City Force 10 team. She also fought it out defensively against a big and talented, undefeated opponent. In one sideline scramble for the ball, Kiki bounced the ball against her opponent and out of bounds.
It would take more to beat the RCF10, though, and Stanford fell behind 10-1 in the early going. Hand it to Stanford, they didn’t quit and came back on a 7-2 run playing their opponent even over the last few minutes of play. When time ran out, the score was 12-8 and Stanford hadfallen to a much more experienced and bigger team.
In my view, the team had lost the focus that they had in the ten-minute game they had played one hour earlier. Belibi, especially, over-played and tried in vain to put the team on her back. Demetre couldn’t find her stroke and Harriel had a hard time shooting over the outstretched hands of the opponents.
It was clear that this sophomore-to-be subset of the 2022-23 Stanford team gained valuable experience. Kiki brought new assertiveness to her game, Jzaniya's studies of the other teams reflected well in her execution of her game. Brooke showed a willingness to mix it up with the opposition and to be more assertive. And Fran's leadership has emerged as she learns the value of playing within herself while involving her teammates in the game.
The experience of playing against other accomplished athletes will prepare this group to be stronger individuals and bring higher skill sets to next year’s team experience.
Box Score:
Iriafen — (1)+1+1+1+(1)+1+(1)=7 / 11
Harriel — 1+2+1=4 / 7
Demetre — 1 / 2
Belibi — 0

Hope they do - as a sign of their commitment, Stanford did have one of their coaches at this tournament (Katy Steding).

I watched Stanford play Texafornia and Tenn. a few observations:
Iriafen looks really solid. Face up game was there, attack the basket. She seemed best equipped to handle the oppositions best interior player. She should play a lot next year.
Fran looked good. Has expanded her range some. Still most effective around the basket
Demetere has a great 3 point stoke when her feet are set. She hovered on the perimeter and largely only took midrange and mostly 3 pointers. I’m just unsure at this point where she will fit in the rotation next year. She could play a stretch 4 but we are so deep at the 4/5 already. She is not quick enough to guard fast perimeter players.
Harriel looked solid defensively, quick enough but pretty scrawny. She took a lot of 3 point shots and missed most of them in the two game I saw. I didn’t see much offensive efficiency from her. She will definitely get minutes next year but I would predict not as a starter.
