If those padded helmet covers help prevent concussions, why not wear them in games?
We have a weakness at the center position vis-a-vis blocking.

If true, probably shouldn't rule out Bragg playing Center?

Shaw said in his post scrimmage interview that they planned on training the guards to play center also. So hopefully they will find someone who is effective there.

I like the look of the I-Formation with Symonds and FB and Filkins at RB. Good for short yardage.
Smith looks like he could be a great one.
Patu was looking so good that I worry about losing him in the transfer portal next year
One of the first things that should be taught to student athletes when talking to media is to take the gum out of your mouth before you go on camera. Jerome should know better by now.

Every kick that I could see had the laces facing a direction other than forward. This has been the case on a remarkably high percentage of kicks for, at least, the past 15 years. Is Stanford doing this on purpose? If not, why are we the only team at any level of organized football that is consistently unable to follow the rule of laces out?

I thought Jake Bailey was great as a holder at getting the laces out.
Was Tucker Fisk doing some of the long snapping on FG? I thought I saw him snap at least one...

I didn't see it, but I remember the announcers said something about him as a long snapper. (I was at the game but watched it again on DVR last night.)

Fisk was long snapping because both of our actual long snappers (Petrucci and Parsons) were held out. He's becoming a true football renaissance man.

Don't forget McKee is eligible for the draft any time he wants to go. So all it may take is one good year.
West will probably get his degree this year. He may choose to head off to law school to prepare for his political career.
Patu may be thrust into the spotlight sooner than you think.

This has never happened in the history of college football, and if the spring game was any indication I am not worried.

We fans are funny.
A guy throws two or three good passes - against a defense that they see every day, which ranked 108th in F+, 78th in scoring defense, and 110th in opponents' yards per play in 2020 - against the second and third string, in a game where
it's illegal to hit a QB, and we're anointing him the next Andrew Luck.
I am not trying to be critical - I'm including myself in this!
I agree that worrying about departures to the NFL by any of our QBs is highly presumptuous at this point. They have proven precisely nothing yet. In addition, if the worst thing that happens is that McKee or Patu are that good, then we've probably got at least one good season in front of us!

I'm actually most intrigued by Patu's future, though it won't really be seen for a while. That kid just oozes the "it" factor.

FWIW, Shaw has been saying people are going to be surprised at how good this kid is.

Well Patu has to pass an 800 item questionnaire proctored by Delta Force Sgt. Majors before he is allowed to play.

Whatever "it" is I hope "it" is applicable to helping make his team more competitive than what we've endured in recent years. This goes for all the QBs on the roster. And what Ive seen, read and heard smacks of wishful thinking. Defense and depth, as always, determines winners. With this mind I'm hard-put to get excited.

It's spring, when all teams are undefeated. You are right about the broader concerns for the team, and while Patu looking good in a spring game slightly reduces the long term concern about the QB position (important, because we don't have a ton of depth), in the immediate future, the team's weakness is the defense. Patu could be the second coming of Andrew Luck, but without at least a competent defense we will struggle.

I thought the defense looked pretty good in the spring game.

Right -- the Front 7 was very aggressive.
The secondary needs shoring up at Safety -- a chronic issue.

"The Best DB Coach In College Football" signed exactly three true safeties in 4 classes between 2017-2020. (And one of them was Stuart Head.) We have had the same number of scholarships awarded to walk-on safeties as every other position COMBINED in that stretch. Just mind-boggling how poor his management of a full half of his job has been.
That said, we finally have 2 on the way in the incoming '21 class, and LDS Scotty Edwards returning from mission in addition to likely more in '22.

I suspect the thinking has been that we could recruit like mad at corner and then take the players who weren't good enough cover guys and make safeties out of them. That can work, but it is not a guaranteed recipe for success. Your safeties need to be sure tacklers, aggressive, and have an understanding of where they need to be. They also have to be "fast enough". A converted corner may or may not have those attributes. Mostly, of late, they have not. Hopefully a shift in emphasis and recruiting guys who WANT to play safety will help a lot in the future.
