This is terrific news! Interesting question as to whether Anna becomes the starting point or stays in her current position. I think she could still have a career in the pros if she uses her 6th year to expand her offensive role, as I suspect she can.
The comment about having difficulties getting people to play against is interesting. We got a glimpse of that last year when Oregon State refused to reschedule their missed game with us even though there was time to do so. But South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas is a pretty solid start. I wonder why we only play Louisville when we meet them in the NCAAs. And I would like to play UConn early one year as we once did. Those meetings were always valuable gauges of what we needed to work on.
I will be sad if the Pac 12 goes back to the incomplete schedule. I liked scheduling every other team twice.

I’m sure the scholarship limit goes back after fall winter sports this coming season. Remember the spring sports have no limit now. Softball has 4 in the 5th free year.
Of course 4 of the 6 full scholarship sports are fall winter
Football
MBB
WBB
WVB
As to playing time we normally have 15 (less the past 2 years) so having 16 isn’t much different than normal.
Last year 14 on scholarship less Dodson and Brown

Pretty sure Brown was and still is on scholarship. The 2 that left were Dodson and Moshkau (Brewer?).
We had:
Kiana
Anna
Alyssa
Lexie
Lacie
Ashten
Hannah
Haley
Fran
Brown
Cam
Agnes
Jana
That's 13 and 2 that moved on.

Why is WBB the only sport where our fans consistently refer to every player by first name?

This has been noted before, and I have made efforts to not do this (except for referring to the Hull sisters, for obvious reasons). It even creeps into some of the announcing (like on KZSU). I think absent a good reason, we ought to refer to the women's basketball team members the same way we refer to the men.

It's not just Louisville among the top schools that we don't play during the regular season. I don't think we've played some of the other major programs during the regular season in a long time, such as Notre Dame, Kentucky or Maryland.
I agree, I enjoyed playing UConn early on as a early test on what we needed to work on. Though we get blown out often, we have had those notable wins - snapping two of their long winning streaks in late 2010 during Chiney's freshman season and then again in 2014 in an OT thriller, the season immediately after her graduation

not a coincidence that it's also the only sport where we refer to the coach(es) by first name.
tara sets the standard by using her first name and calls her assistants and players by their first names (e.g. kate rather than coach paye). unlike other sports, the players generally call the coaches by their first names. in press conferences, the media calls tara by her first name, which she appears to welcome.
seems to me it's their call, not ours, and (unlike other sports) their call is mostly first names.

PVTree: Bob meant that we had 14 on scholarship for the 2020-21 season, with two not playing, leaving 12 available to play. Dodson used her option to sit out because of COVID concerns but was still on scholarship and on the roster. She left for ND only after graduation. Brown of course was on scholarship while injured.

Totally agree!! It's subtle, very subtle, but real, sexism.

If it's sexism, why don't we refer to other Stanford women athletes by first name? It's Ledekcky, Heck, and Higuchi (and, perhaps not incidentally, it's almost always Brink. My theory: many of us feel a special connection to these players on this particular team. "Jones." "Williama," and "Wilson" sound impersonal.
And yes, it's Tara while Shaw is Shaw, but you can't convince me that is out of a respect for Shaw that we don't feel toward Tara.
And, for that matter, it's complex. Prechtel and Jerome are almost always "Prechtel and Jerome," for example, and Jump is usually Jump.

I think it's often based on which name is more distinctive, sometimes on which one is easier to spell or say. Obviously we have two Hull sisters, but I think there's also a tendency to call players with common surnames like Williams or Davis by their first names.

Yes, I think it is pretty unique to Stanford and stems from Tara Vanderveer going by her first name, and this sets the tone. The Hull twins and the Samuelson sisters also contributed to this. I have tried to convert to last names but it is hard to break the habits set by Tara, who I just have a hard time referring to as Vanderveer. Too many decades of Tara.
By the way, when I showed up as a freshman at Stanford I was shocked that all my Professors went by their first names. It was not Professor or Doctor or Professor So-and-So but Mark and Jon etc. I was told at the time it was a Stanford thing--the casual California influence. My profs also tended to wear Birkenstocks and shorts to lecture.
RE: MBB and WBB the zoom -
TheWildJacko - 05-06-2021
I actually don't think it's all that unique to Stanford, it might be more of a regional thing or a team by team thing. Like, if you look at the Boneyard it's the same thing:
https://the-boneyard.com/threads/paige-and-azzi-workout-at-slam.171557/
But I think a lot of Southern schools would go by a last-name basis.
RE: MBB and WBB the zoom -

Or the cal board or several others I read it’s first name.

And if you think pros -- some of the star men go by first names -- LaBron, Draymont (sp?), Steph (some of the time), Kobe, etc -- and then there are others who are more commonly referred to by last name. It's a mix.
For Stanford, I do recall from decades ago, it was a mix. The 1989-90 team (1st championship team), most of the time Whiting was Val, Azzi and Steding were mostly Azzi and Steding, as was Zielstra. Sonia was sometimes Sonia, sometimes Henning. Tricia Stevens as I recall was mostly Tricia. etc. So . . . , a mix historically.

I’m going too add this here. The three point line for women will be the same as for the men now. 22 feet 1 and 3/4. For those who love meters 6.75
That’s 16 3/4 inches more than before. That will certainly be a challenge

A good decision, I think. But yes, a challenge -- and it will make record comparisons meaningless. Either previous records or new ones should come with an asterisk or some indicator, but that's unlikely to be done. But we should all keep it in mind, when we see far fewer 3s being made next year.

It’s not unusual to see a male in the corner ready to shoot a three but whoops he’s out of bounds. We will see that now in WBB

Moving 3 point line not quite a done deal:
The NCAA Women’s Basketball Rules Committee on Friday proposed moving the 3-point line to the international distance of 22 feet, 1¾ inches, beginning with the 2021-22 season.
"All rule recommendations must be approved by the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel, which is scheduled to discuss women’s basketball proposals June 3."
