RE: 2021 Starting QB - Phogge - 05-06-2021

If anybody is still alive and has his faculties from the ‘54 Bruins roster he could help out with creating a single wing O at Stanford. Alas, Red Sanders is dead.

Note: UCLA 72 Stanford 0

For those who may not be familiar with the single wing, the Quarterback is actually a blocking back first and a ball carrier second, the Tailback is a combination running back who can pass the ball, or a quarterback who can run.

And often quick kicked thus the term “triple threat.”

I remember reading in the paper as a kid about Red Sanders death. The circumstances were a little, well shall we say suspicious. My mother was shocked.

Similar to Nelson Rockefeller and Errol Flynn.

Asked about the importance of the SC/UCLA rivalry Sanders was quoted, "It's not a matter of life and death, it's more important than that."

I think he could enter the draft after next season as he'll be more than three years after his high school graduation.....

What evidence is there that this is even within the realm of possibility?

Since when is evidence required, or even common, on a sports board?

RE: 2021 Starting QB - Phogge - 05-06-2021

Come on Crimson, on T Dome every opinion was based on fact. Especially the opinions from Antioch raised Warriors of the Pen.

Did OF mean it ironically?

If Tim Tawa doesn't get drafted high, Coach Shaw should ask him to join the football team. He might be the best QB on campus.

and when is evidence required when talking about the NFL rule on being allowed to enter the draft three years after your high school graduating class...

- McKee is a massive recruiting bust

This seems premature to me. Are you saying this because Tanner McKee didn't beat out Jack West for the first-game starter in 2020? After all, McKee was a true freshman who hadn't played competitive football in over two years. Common sense would dictate that McKee will be better this fall than he was last fall.

I actually think our offense will be pretty good in 2021. The defense, on the other hand, could be bad for the third year in a row, which is really concerning to me.

Yes, if a 5-star recruit with a year under his belt can't beat out a guy who (IMnsHO) isn't even a mediocre starting QB, then he is a bust

Still don't get it, winflop. In fall 2020 McKee was a true freshman, coming off his LDS mission where he played zero competitive football. He did not have a year under his belt at that time. What he had was two years away from the game.

Now with a year in the system, per Samuel McF and others, McKee is poised to be starting QB over West. I still think it's extraordinarily premature to call McKee a bust, and I expect to see a much better QB than we saw briefly in 2020.

Winflop is agreeing with you. After a year in the system. You guys are talking past each other.

RE: 2021 Starting QB - Papa John - 05-07-2021

OK, my bad.

RE: 2021 Starting QB - BostonCard - 05-07-2021

Yeah, he meant that McKee should be considered a bust if he can't beat out the rest of the quarterbacks on the roster.

Holds all the Oregon passing records.  Challenge is that he's 6' 0" (barely) and 182 pounds.

He's 196 pounds and was Oregon's Player of the Year over Sam Noyer (Colorado) when Noyer was a senior and Tawa a sophomore. He was Oregon's Player of the Year as a junior over Justin Herbert (Oregon; Chargers) when Herbert was a senior and Tawa a junior. He throws 90+, is cat quick and runs in the 4.5s. The only thing not to like is he doesn't fit Shaw's mold size wise.

Tawa won't do it anyway, but it's fun to speculate.

RE: 2021 Starting QB - BobK - 05-07-2021

Tawa 6-0 196

Tawa supposedly gave some consideration to doing both sports when he came to Stanford, but decided against it.

RE: 2021 Starting QB - fullmetal - 05-07-2021

Drew Brees is listed at 6'0".
Michael Vick is listed at 6'0".
Kyler Murray is listed at 5'10".
Anna Wilson's brother is listed at 5'11".  (But when I saw him at the Alamodome, I thought that was a bit generous.)

Not every QB is 6'0" or below, but it's not insurmountable.

The other thing possibly not to like is that he had zero football offers in high school. Why was that? Can't be size; there were three 4* dual-threat QBs who were 6' or shorter in his class (and three more 3* dual-threat QBs 6' or shorter that signed with P5 programs).

On "doesn't fit the mold size-wise," 2 of our 2022 QB offers are 6'1" and 6'2".
