Also, holy crap, how many felonies can you commit and still keep your scholarship on the UW football team?

Gotta figure that in college football there were, are and always will be players and coaches and apologists just like the ones who "saw and spoke no evil" back then. Nauseating, plain and simple. Curtis Williams' case is not an isolated one.

Williams struck me as a bonafide psychopath. One who would have caused destruction in other peoples' lives had lived or not been sent to prison for a long period of time - the latter of which, he seemed expert at avoiding. I was at the game and was horrified like everyone else to see him carried off. But, his death is probably just as well.

RE: Bryce Love Waived - BostonCard - 04-21-2021

I don't know how anyone's paralysis and death can be "just as well".  This presumes that his life was irredeemable.  Yes, many young men with a similar history don't wind up in a cycle of violence and crime that they never come out of.  However, some turn their lives around.  This podcast from NPR's invisibilia is worth a listen.

Quote:A panel of judges sits to decide the fate of the young woman. She's the child of addicts and an ex-addict and ex-felon herself, and she's asking the court to trust her to become an attorney. The outcome of her case hinges on a question we all struggle with: are we destined to repeat our patterns, or do we generally stray in surprising directions? - a question increasingly relevant in an age when algorithms are trying to predict everything about our behavior.

yes, i wonder how much the coaching staff overlooked his off-field aggressiveness precisely to take advantage of his on-field aggressiveness.

Your overall point is very valid. But, I don't buy it in this particular case. This kid seemed to get off on physically torturing his wife. It's not like he got into a few bar fights, stole some Cheetos and was getting poor grades.

May I ask the point of your post? Are you saying he deserved to be paralyzed and die at age 24 because he was a big guy and had committed crimes? This feels like George Floyd deserved what he got because he had drugs in his system and resisted arrest and may have passed a bad $20.

That may not be your intent so I'll stop here and give you a chance to explain.

It is hard to read intent in a pithy post on a message board.  I completely agree with you that any suggestion that he "deserved" his fate is awful, but also there is a natural tendency to lionize those who are tragically taken, and those people don't always have a heroic life.  It is perfectly reasonable to note that Williams had a troubled life.  His troubled life doesn't make his death deserved, but the inverse is also true; his tragic death doesn't absolve him of what he did during his life.

Does Carolina need a backup? He's from down the road, and maybe he would like a reunion with CMc?

Phogge is eminently capable of issuing a response to your comment, of course, but I cannot leave it unremarked. How his fair and apt comment would inspire playing of the George Floyd card is, as the Brits would say, a bit much. The Williams case is a stark record of sadistic, domestic violence and the dysfunctional need to inflict physical suffering. How does anything there bring to mind the undeserved demise of the pathetic Floyd?

RE: Bryce Love Waived - Goose - 04-21-2021

It is always sad to see a potentially great career derailed by an injury. Frankly, I worry about CMac as well. He has gone to great lengths to protect his body by making it as strong as possible. However, as Bryce Love's experience demonstrates, no matter what one does, football is a dangerous game. You will get hurt. The only question is how bad and how often.

RE: Bryce Love Waived - fullmetal - 04-21-2021

Mike Davis did leave the Panthers bereft of a clear backup when he departed for Atlanta, but it's no sure thing that Love would be a clear favorite over the other five RBs not named McCaffrey employed by the Panthers.  What I mean is...Toby didn't find success with a new team either.  But it'd still be great if Love could land another contract.

RE: Bryce Love Waived - Phogge - 04-22-2021

I must have missed my George Floyd comment. Could you show it to me? I also would like to see my comment about deserving to be paralyzed and die. Could you show that to me?

Men who beat up on women are scum. No ifs, ands or butts. I was raised to try and avoid fights except if you could intervene to protect somebody. Mrs. Williams needed help, Curtis Williams needed to be placed in a cell.

RE: Bryce Love Waived - CardinalSagehen - 04-22-2021

Somehow, this thread drifted from the tough breaks faced by an exemplary Stanford football scholar-athlete and human being, both on and off the field, to discussion of unrelated alleged rapists, drunk drivers, and domestic abusers.  And then there was something about George Floyd - an incredibly important topic, but not for this thread.

Maybe we can swing this back around to Bryce's incredible grit and massively entertaining contributions to Stanford football? The fact that he came back for his fourth year. The fact that he stayed late to sign autographs for kids, with a smile.

Was there ever anything more exciting for fans than whenever Bryce touched the ball in 2017?
19 touchdowns in 12.5 games, most of them over 50 yards if I recall correctly, and many of them on high-ankle sprains.
2,118 rushing yards.
8 yards per carry.

Unreal.

CMac was the better football player and was very entertaining to watch in his own right.  But nothing could match Bryce's explosiveness in 2017.

RE: Bryce Love Waived - BobK - 04-22-2021

Great post sagehen. We certainly have had some great running backs at Stanford
