I mean if billionaires want to transfer their wealth to multi-millionaires for a vanity project, I don't have any issues with that.  The issue is when they then turn around and plead poverty try to screw everyone else.

R.I.P. Super League

April 18, 2021 - April 20, 2021

Nobody will ever make a greater impact on the world with only 2 days of living.

My god, the incompetence in trying to put this through is staggering.  Did they not do any sort of polling to see whether this was something futbol fans wanted?  Because the answer is not just "no", it is "hell no".

It is just so darn delightful. This whole messy saga. An echo chamber of billionaires so disconnected from the fans that they've gone and set themselves on fire. Heads are already rolling, as you'll need new penitent leadership to go save face with your domestic leagues and with FIFA/UEFA.

And when we say the Super League is suing the English teams who have all now expressed an intent to bow out, we're really talking about just three teams--Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Juventus--as the Super League is down to three after Atletico Madrid, AC Milan, and Inter Milan have now also jumped ship. So, 9 of the 12 are now out, but sure, you guys go ahead and sue to keep the band together. "YOU GUYS PROMISED! WE WERE GONNA BE TOGETHER FOREVER!"

Word is that UEFA offered some financial inducements to the English clubs to leave, but not to Real/Barca/Juve, who were seen as the primary antagonists here. And given that they're the only ones left, that seems like an accurate read.

I'd honestly respect the English clubs more if they came out with a statement like, "Sorry, folks. We totally misread the room on whether you all would be cool with this, and that's our bad. But, like, we were expecting to make so much money with this deal. Like stupid money. It was gonna be so rad. But we totally get it, sorry. History and all. Love history. So great. But also--man, that money."

I don't know why I'm so so obsessed with this story, but I do find it fascinating in a rubbernecking a horrible accident kind of way.

I laughed at this because I had the same reaction when it was first announced:

The Watergate quote comes to mind. These were simply not very bright guys and things got out of hand. And honestly, this is an idea Perez and Agnelli have been working on for some time. I guess they just didn't have people around them to tell them no. The fact they both still have jobs just tells you how insulated they are in Spain and Italy.

Story in NY Times about how the Super League had a life span of only 48 hrs. (May be behind a paywall.)

The Super League accomplished one of its goals.  It promised "excitement and drama".
