Although syncro is not an NCAA sport, today was a good day; we won two national titles.
Which raises the question, how many times have we won two NCAA national championships on the same day? I know we did it on November 25, 1996, as both the men's and women's cross country national titles were held in Tucson, which we swept. I would not be surprised if there were others, since title matches tend to be concentrated at the end of the season.

How quickly you forget. December 8, 2019. The Stanford Men's Water Polo team won the NCAA title at UOP in Stockton. A couple of hours later, the Stanford Women's Soccer team defeated North Carolina in Avaya Stadium. I was wondering if there was a way I could view both in person, but realized it was a stretch and opted for soccer. Either way, I would have ended up hoarse and happy.

I had that same question, and made the same call. I think the MWP scene at UoP would have been more intense given the opponent was Pacific, but watching the NCAA final go to PKs in Avaya was an amazing experience.
Stanford also won two NCAAs in 1996 when both the men's and women's cross country teams won at the same venue.
The format for XC, IT&F and OT&F mean it has been possible for a number of schools with strong running programs to get two NCAAs in a single day.

Not sure how reputable this site is, but apparently we have another loaded recruiting class coming in. Not only is it the top class, but we have 4 of the top 5 gymnasts, 5 of the top 10, and 6 of the top 16. Assuming Malone is back next year, I'd say we have a lot to be optimistic about. I'm guessing Malone was the top recruit in his class, if so that would make 4 straight years with the top overall recruit.

Stanford is missing a lot of points from WVB and WSoc and missing those contributions will be hard to overcome. It would be ironic if reducing the number of sports actually helps Stanford. As I am pretty sure at least a few of Stanford's normal Cup rivals will still meet or exceed the maximum number of sports to be tallied.

It is not only reputable, but it is the only site that ranks male gymnasts coming out of high school.

There is no reason in the world why Malone would not be back next year. Other than injury. It's not like gymnasts can make money doing gymnastics. Leveraging your gymnastics into a better college degree, particularly a Stanford degree, is the only payoff. These guys do NOT have full scholarships by the way. 18 guys have to share 6.2 scholarships.
As a 17 year old Malone was not the top gymnast in the country. Cameron Bock (17) was considered by everyone number one (Michigan) and Bennett Huang (17) (Iowa) was number two. Both of those guys are seniors in college this year. I am assuming that Brody was a year behind in school because he is now a junior. Brody did not do National Championships that last year in high school, so I'm not sure who was considered number one. No one was really ranking guys systematically at the time.
Interesting facts: Bennett Huang went to Palo Alto High. 34 ACT. Not the greatest GPA because he was doing 3.5 hours of gymnastics a day and 2.5 hours of cello practice a day. Really wanted Stanford but could not get admitted. Was offered a spot at every other gymnastics program in the country. Picked Iowa because of the flexibility their music department offered. Michigan music refused to free him up for gymnastics meets. He was admitted to Julliard for graduate school on Friday during the middle of the NCAA meet.
My son competed against all of these guys starting at 10 years old. Bennett is incredibly nice. Bock - not so much. He doesn't know Malone. Hopefully my son's team will do the Stanford Open meet next year.

There are only 14 or 15 D1 men's gymnastics programs so there is limited competition for the top high school gymnasts.

There is a lot of competition among gymnasts to get a spot. So few spots available for these guys. And as of Saturday, there are only 12 NCAA D1 programs. Iowa and Minnesota just dropped their D1 status. Springfield is D3 but competes with all of the D1 programs. All of those club teams represent schools that used to have D1 programs. William and Mary may or may not drop their men's program in the next year. My son's team announced they were dropping gymnastics the first week he was on campus. He got one year in as a D1 athlete. Now they are club level. I assume Iowa and Minnesota will have club teams next year.
https://roadtonationals.com/results/standingsM/
That shows all of the programs available including club teams.
Not the final standings. There is at least one more club meet coming. Maybe two.

I appreciate the insight on all of this. I've got a question on the team USA men's national team. I noticed they have a roster, updated from March that lists Malone and Loos. I'm surprised that Loos would be ahead of Briones, is there any particular reason for this, does the national team rate Loos higher right now? Will this roster get updated again before the Olympics?

The national team is determined by performance at Winter Cup, the National Championships, and the Olympic trials. There might be a couple of international meets that matter, but they aren't every year events. Briones was not ready to produce at Winter Cup. Loos was awesome, and he has been the better gymnast this year. College meets don't matter at all.
