Namath wore down because of knee problems. Later in his career he had his knee drained at halftime. The injuries didn't necessarily end his career but they contributed to ending his Pro Bowl run.

Mills has modern medicine in his corner but what was scary was running out of bounds in garbage time without being hit in his redshirt freshman year and tearing the ACL again. That may just scare off some suitors.

Outsider:

Thanks for sharing those scouting videos.  Very interesting to watch.  Shows how difficult it is to be a quarterback at the college level, let alone professional.  A lot to recognize about the defense, and no more than a couple of seconds to figure out what to do.  And that's just the mental side of it.  Oh, and then you have to have a great arm, at least good general athletic ability, and the capacity to take a hit. Whew!  Success seems almost impossible if a) you don't have good protection, or b) you go up against an highly athletic secondary, like UW's a few years back.

The evaluator was entertaining and quite fair, in my judgment.  I was hoping he'd end the discussion with a proclamation of where Mills should be drafted, but I guess that's not part of his analysis

Anyway, I appreciate you posting the videos.

Speaking of Namath, I was in Soldier Field with what turned out to be his last NFL game. My dad took my brother and myself to see Broadway Joe, one of the few non-Bears that my dad liked. Too bad I was too young to be into it, but I would have liked to have kept those tickets as a souvenir.

I've lost track of how many hours of top 7 NFL Draft QB prospect coaching video I have seen over the last month.

The thing I notice about watching NFL and College football coaching videos is that the distinction between NFL and College schemes is not as great as some would lead you to believe. The game is not that different, really.

The defenses and concepts to beat them are pretty darn similar. What you tend to have is more better athletes in the NFL with more time to study the game to more quickly recognize what is going on. Games are won and lost by fractions of second reactions.

After watching all of them, I think Justin Fields has the highest upside and is the best pure football player of them all. Davis Mills has all the ability to be an elite NFL QB. He - like all of the prospects - needs to be more consistent. I do believe if he came back for another year at Stanford he could have positioned himself to be the #1 overall pick in 2022.

Nobody gets to be the #1 pick playing for a team that doesn't even finish with a .500 record

John Elway did. Unless you're like me and refuse to accept the bogus final score from Strawberry Canyon on November 20, 1982.

LOL Papa John, you beat me to it.

Of course, it is always possible things have changed in the last 39 years.
Paul Hornung won the H-man playing on a losing team. What are the chances someone will do that these days?

RE: Davis Mills a 1st round pick? - Phogge - 04-19-2021

Golden Boy was the #1 pick and the Packers knew where to play him. The Domers had gone 2-8. Jim Brown picked #6 and seventh round pick Gene Hickerson made the HOF.

We went 6-5 that season :)))))))

Also, I knew John Elway. John Elway was a friend of mine. Davis Mills is no John Elway.

Neither is Dan Quayle.

Very True. Even if you are above .500 but don't win your conference it is tough to make a splash. That said, the decision to go to the NFL this year may or may not have been the "optimal" one. That we will never know. It may be that Mills goes in the first round. It also very well may be he does not, which I think more probable. I obviously don't know, but I suspect the decision was greatly influenced by the feeling he was ready to move on. Your draft position will have an effect on your first contract, but if you think you can play at the next level that first contract isn't the entire story. Starting one year earlier gets you one year closer to the second contract, and may get you on a team that is good enough they can let you sit and learn for a year or so while getting paid to do so. Not a bad alternative.

2016 NFL draft Jared Goff went #1, Cal was 8-5 that year including 4-5 in the Pac-12 finishing tied for 4th in the Pac-12 North

2017 NFL draft Myles Garrett went #1, Texas A&M was 8-5 including 4-4 in the SEC finishing 4th in the SEC West

There was the '83 draft, as well. . . .

Unless you get drafted in the first round, which gives the team an extra year of control. AFAIK, that's the only reason that Mills-in-the-first-round rumors are out there: some team may project him as their starter after a year of learning, and drafting him in the first round delays the second contract for an extra year. Fact is, having to pay a franchise QB contract sucks for the depth of the rest of the team, so delaying that salary cap burden for a year might be reason enough to grab a QB at the end of the first round even if you think he would be available later in the draft.

RE: Davis Mills a 1st round pick? - PVTree - 04-19-2021

Great point, BBM. A financial decision may make Davis a first-rounder for a team convinced that he has the potential to become their starter.

If you are an elite prospect like these two guys above - especially at QB and pass rushing defensive end - it almost doesn't matter how good your team is, provided scouts are convinced you played against half-way decent competition.

RE: Davis Mills a 1st round pick? - Papa John - 04-19-2021

Eric Fisher was drafted first by the Chiefs in 2013. Fisher played offensive tackle for Central Michigan, which finished 7-6 but 4th in the MAC West in 2012.

Central Michigan had wins over SE Missouri State, crappy 4-8 Iowa, Akron, Eastern Michigan, Miami (OH), Massachusetts, and Western Kentucky in the Little Caesar's Pizza Bowl. CMU had losses to Michigan State (blowout), Northern Illinois, Toledo, Navy, Ball State and Western Michigan.

Fisher is neither a QB nor a defensive end, and he played against mostly lousy MAC competition. Sadly he was injured against the Bills in the AFC Championship game, missed the Super Bowl and was released last month.
