Phogge, don't travel to China!  Nowadays it's hard to use cash or a Western credit card...it's all QR codes and mobile pay on your phone.

Amazing. So they know they're introducing an inconvenient system that many fans will hate. I had the same issues with the U.S. Open a few years ago - their mobile app would not install unless you agreed to share all of your phone's contacts with it; I saw NO reason why I needed to give them access to my entire rolodex. I protested and got my tickets in 30 seconds from will call. One step forward, two steps back....

As I understand it, I can give away tickets by text or email, but the recipient needs to have a Stanford ticket account, and also needs to have the Stanford ticket app on his or her phone.

That's going to make it a lot harder to give away tickets at the last minute, I don't buy the additional security benefit as I doubt there is a big counterfeit ticket problem for Stanford football, and it's going to make it a lot harder to give tickets to people who aren't already Stanford fans. Are people who aren't yet Stanford fans going to be willing to open a Stanford ticket account and download an app, just so they can attend a game that they might not feel that strongly about?

this is a stupid policy.  The only reason I can think of to require this is to expand their customer list.  In addition to the giving tix to friends they are also basically requiring everyone in a ticket order to have an account and the app given people on the same ticket order don't always enter the stadium at the same time, and even if they do enter at the same time some may come out at halftime while others remain in the stadium.  This also creates the overhead for the ticket buyer of having to transfer the tix everyone in their order, glad I only have two tix in mine.

ADD:  response from the ticket office

This is correct information, and consistent with other platforms like TicketMaster and StubHub who utilizing mobile ticketing transfers. Normally, if there are barcodes it is easy to screenshot and share the images. Since we use a “digital signature” similar to Apple Pay, this makes that process much more secure, even if the added step of account creation is required. Our users are able to opt-out of unwanted communication as well if that is a concern.

ADD: second response from the ticket office

Neither you nor your partner will be required to download and use the Stanford Athletics mobile app to attend games. It is recommended, but not required. Mobile tickets can be accessed via email or their online account using a web browser. Creating an account to accept a ticket transfer is as simple as filling out the form below [not below here]. After “Create Account” is selected, the recipient can open the ticket on their phone and scan-in, or save it to their Apple or G Pay Wallet

What a cluster. I live in SoCal with a large extended family and it’s impossible for me to come up to Palo Alto Thanksgiving weekend. So I always sell my post-Thanksgiving tix on StubHub. So whoever I sell to has to create an account and download the app? This just makes everything really more difficult than it needs to be. I’ll give it a shot but after 48 years as a STH I think I’m gonna bail after this one.

It doesn't actually sound like much has changed.

Per the note above you can still get tickets by email and through your online account.

Both of those provide a PDF that you can print out or forward to someone else.

The app just provides a more secure option of transferring tickets where the original barcode is disabled and a new one is generated.

Qwerty, the Stanford Athletics website has a spot where you can directly sell your tickets on StubHub.  I've used that several times and it's pretty easy.  I assume that will continue to be available.  Go to gostanford.com and choose Tickets -> Stubhub: Buy or Sell Stanford Tickets

Thanks, cctop.  I'll stow my paranoia and give it a try.  The ticket office, Rich in particular, has always been very responsive.

RE: Season tickets - chimera - 04-07-2021

I would hold off on the worry.  If things arrive by email they can very probably be printed or you could use your email to be scanned if the code shows.  As long as you get the bar code printed or available to be scanned, you have a valid ticket.  I get mobile tickets, have for the past few years, and I think I could print off the emails if I had a mind to.  I send to others by just sending them the email and they take the ticket(s) they need off of that.  Mobile tickets are actually really easy and convenient once you get used to them.

Agree with all of this except for one thing. It is unclear that the scanners they intend to use in the future will actually work on paper tickets. A lot of the newer ones do not as I understand it. That may mean that paper tickets will route you to a particular entrance, which may or may not be convenient for you. The information that accompanied the announcements certainly seemed to be treating "mobile tickets" as the only choice. I, like you, have been downloading my ticket via email and transferring it to my phone. It may be that this year that is the only really good option.

RE: Season tickets - chimera - 04-07-2021

That could be true.  An email on your phone even without any apps should also work for mobile scanners.  In the end, they want fans at the games so they will have to find a way to accommodate those who do not do mobile tickets.  All they would really need to do is leave one scanner that can read paper at each entrance, not very hard for them to do.

RE: Season tickets - WBB fan - 04-09-2021

Personally, I"m furious about this. I do not like to use mobile tickets and the issues about bringing along friends are going to make me less likely to do that. Transferring tix, totally easy with paper tickets. Mobile? Nope, complicated, extra steps, etc. As far as I can see, this is done because it's easier for Stanford, but with little or no consideration of what's convenient for fans. Some like mobile tix, others do not. At least give us a choice!!!! My immediate gut reaction to the announcement, well, I think I don't go to any more games. Of course, I will go because I'm a fan, but I will be seething every time I do. A REALLY BAD CHOICE, STANFORD.

It is still pretty unclear what choice Stanford has actually made. It may be that paper tickets printed out at home will still work at every gate. I am going to directly ask that question and see what happens.

RE: Season tickets - newguy - 04-09-2021

i could see Alabama or Ohio State doing this.  any school with a large, loyal fanbase.
but Stanford, the school with the smallest fanbase in the conference?

Bama is not exactly the center of the tech universe.

Let's flip this around.   Stanford University, the place that gave its football players iPads to use as playbooks, will of course be pioneers in using electronic based systems for its college gameday operations.

Running two or more systems is really a worst case scenario for audits and fraud control.   My guess is they will let people use paper, for a while and at a cost, if the customers insist.  And each year it will become more difficult and expensive to get access to a paper ticket.  Over time this idea of paper tickets will be something similar to trying to get a Sears (paper) catalog to order your next washing machine.

FWIW -
I still print out my boarding passes for airplanes for fear my phone will run out of juice or get lost, but in my experience more than half of airline passengers in the USA are using their phones and have no real backup plan.  Shows my age, I guess.

Remember when airlines and travel agents used paper ticket packets with carbon paper?
Does anyone on this board still use travel agent printed paper airplane tickets?

RE: Season tickets - Phogge - 04-10-2021

I guess that I’m close to the garbage dump. I hate texting and have no need for a smart phone. I use a phone to make and receive phone calls. The world says what a ridiculous way to communicate. Pay extra for a printed ticket when the tickets are overpriced? Are you kidding?

There will be digital errors at the gates. Fans will get pissed. The security guards will get frustrated. The ticket office will get overwhelmed. No big deal at Stanford as there won’t be many spectators anyway. If it happens in Tuscaloosa people will die.

A digital world? Humbug.

Well put!!!  I predict that there will be times at gates when this is going to be a major mess. And at time, the system will go down and nothing will work, and then what???  Paper, although it can be forged, is a system that works without complications and never goes off-line.

The system may get hacked and your e-ticket may be for the game past or game future or for Premier Night of the re-opening of the Condor in the city!

RE: Season tickets - chimera - 04-10-2021

I totally get why some people do not want to do mobile tickets.  But having used them for a few seasons, there is really not much that can wrong short of not charging your phone at all, which is not exactly hard to avoid.  If the scanners go down it will affect everyone, not just those with mobile tickets, and anyway, if the staff has to look at each ticket, a mobile ticket works just as well as paper for that.  It has the game, date, etc on it along with the bar code.  I love the mobile tickets.  I load up my phone, which takes just a minute, and then I have them all with me, no worry about losing one or taking the wrong one or anything.  I delete them after use but you don't have to do that.  All kinds of events are going paperless these days.  Like it or not, probably have to get on that train sooner or later.  They are faster because the scanners don't need you to position the barcode, you just hold the phone in the right spot and bing, it registers.

I'm with you on this. I can't count how many times absent minded me forgot his paper tickets. Racing back home for them, trying to reprint on a printer at the Alumni Center, or waiting in line at the ticket office with ID to prove I'm a season ticket holder... all not much fun. But I never forget my smartphone.

I can just see someone, when asked about a framed cell phone, "Yeah, that's my ticket to the game I'll never forget in 2021."
