If there was any coach in major college football I would accept "I was a clueless dumb ass" from as a reason for exercising poor judgment, it is Mike Gundy.  I don't believe he is a bad guy, but I doubt he's very well-read or travelled for someone with his wealth.  As a leader of young men, and of course, mostly black young men, more should be expected of him in terms of his awareness about the world. Hopefully Oklahoma State's leadership requires him to broaden his horizons a bit beyond football and fishing.

OF, he wins. Very important in Stillwater. Ever been there or Norman? Different world.

What Phogge said. There's only one time I've ever been physically threatened while cheering for Stanford at an away football game. I was in Norman in 1984 to watch Stanford play the Sooners. My friend and I were sitting in a section of mostly OU fans, but since everyone was wearing red we kind of blended in. All was well during the national anthem. I sang along and a senior citizen sitting in front of me turned around and complimented me on my voice. As the game started, though, we stood out as we politely applauded when things went well for Stanford--which wasn't too often. The senior citizen turned around and told me that she would "rip my hands off" if I continued to cheer for Stanford. I could tell that the folks around her had her back, so my friend and I cheered silently for the rest of the game. I'm not sure if they were still sore after the 31-14 whipping in 1980 by John Elway and company, or maybe that's how they treated all visitors during the Barry Switzer era.

I was there in the rain in '80. Had to rinse out my camera. Had to change magazines in a tunnel. Stanford up 31-0 and you could hear a pin drop and it wasn't that close. Steve Lemon committed a late hit or they would probably have recorded a shutout. Switzer said it was the best QB performance he ever saw. And Darrin missed the game. I even learned to line dance that night. In a polo shirt and sneakers.

Gundy's clearly got a history of issues, but he probably deserves the benefit of the doubt after the apology video, and his players will get to make that call.  If Gundy does the hard work that this kind of apology warrants, he'll be a great example for those who fear being publicly and permanently dragged for non-serious failures/slip-ups, etc.  It's going to take more than two videos though.

I'm not sure that was the best way to phrase it, but Gundy needs a chance to sincerely and publicly apologize, otherwise Ordinary Joe will never get a chance, and we'll never come together as a society again.

One of my best memories of a roadie occurred in Norman, 1980, the weekend of the Oklahoma game. Sat in a mixed-bag section on about 10 yd. line with the Cardoza Travel group. Lot of beer. We howled and hooted ourselves hoarse. Before and after the game, 90% of the Sooner fans we encountered, (who descend on Norman from all over the midwest by the thousands when they're not on a roadie themselves), could not have been more gracious or classier. Post game, many of them Dallas Cowboy fanatics, spoke about Tony Hill like he was a cherished member of their family. They were, by far, the best homers I ever experienced. Jerks in Seattle, Eugene and Berkeley could take a lesson. Wonderful trip, spectacular game, Partied Hearty in the rain. Cowboy Museum was cool, too.
