RE: Baseball Trivia - qwerty49 - 05-01-2020

The other guy was even worse than “Boo.”

RE: Baseball Trivia - Phogge - 05-01-2020

The guy I hated worse than Lemaster was Neifi Perez.

Bert Blyleven, made just two all star teams after pitching for 22 years and rolling in a 287-250 record.  Never led the league in wins, once led the league in losses in his 10-17 1988 season.  Won 20 games just once, when he went 20-17 in 1973 -- despite having 35 or more starts 11 times.  Led league in shutouts in 1973, 1985 and 1989, with a career ERA of 3.31.  #5 on all time strikeout list.  Went 5-1 in postseason.  Gave up 50 HRs in 1986 and 46 HRs in 1987. Career pitching WAR of 96.1.  Koufax's was 53.1, so I guess Blyleven deserves the Hall of Fame.

RE: Baseball Trivia - BobK - 05-02-2020

Blyleven had the best curve ball in my lifetime.

Glad I don’t know what WAR is but Koufax the best pitcher in my lifetime. WAR would include his first 5 who cares seasons

Mick's right!

OPS+ is a weighted average stat (you can google it) and I think they are something like #6 and #11 there, but if you actually look at raw OPS (on-base plus slugging pct) Lanier and LeMaster are #3 and #5 all-time worst, respectively.

Fortunately for the Giants they never overlapped as "Boo" came up just as Lanier retired.

I remember Chris Speier was an all-star his 2nd, 3rd and 4th year in the bigs (72-'74), had a good year in '75, then tanked big in '76, hitting .226.  Tim Foli came along for his near-career-worst year at .228, then it was LeMaster's turn.

1978 was actually a "good news" year for the Giants.  They went 89-73, attendance was over 1.7 million and 4th in the league, they still had McCovey, Darrell Evans and budding stars like Jack Clark.  Bob Knepper (17-11) and Vida Blue (18-10) had good years, Mike Ivie hit 4 pinch HRs (including a grand slam against the Dodgers at the 'Stick), Minton, Lavelle and Billie Jean King's brother, randy Moffitt were in the bullpen.  And they also had "Boo", sixth pick overall in the 1973 MLB draft.  He hit .235 in 1978, an improvement over both Foli and Speier the two prior years.

RE: Baseball Trivia - Phogge - 05-02-2020

Mike Ivie was bat shit crazy.

RE: Baseball Trivia - BobK - 05-02-2020

Ivie was once a catcher why did he switch positions ?

RE: Baseball Trivia - Phogge - 05-02-2020

Couldn’t handle it mentally.

RE: Baseball Trivia - BobK - 05-02-2020

Yes Ivie couldn’t throw the ball back to the pitcher. Bothered Dale Murphy also.
The Steve Sax problem

Phoggee who was the Reds catcher who kept pumping? Before Bench. Edwards??

RE: Baseball Trivia - Phogge - 05-02-2020

Johnny Edwards. You noticed too? I thought at first that he was afraid of delayed steals but he did it all the time.

RE: Baseball Trivia - BobK - 05-02-2020

Thanks I thought Johnny but looked him up saw gold gloves. All those pumps would have driven A pitcher crazy

Supposedly he was a great catcher.  Cannon for an arm, soft hands, fearless behind the plate.  Had a lot of mental and emotional challenges, including the fact that he didn't like being the center of attention behind the plate.  He started pumping two to three times, was belittled for it, quit, then came back as a first baseman.

Had a great year with the Giants in 1979, hit 27 HRs with 89 RBIs, then sliced off his little finger with a hunting knife (accidentally) and was ineffective thereafter.  Giants had wanted him to take over for McCovey.

RE: Baseball Trivia - Mick - 05-05-2020

Five trivia questions:

1) There are only two pitchers in MLB history who have:

- Thrown multiple no-hitters
- Won multiple Cy Young awards
- Won multiple league strikeout crowns
- Won multiple World Series titles
- Had multiple All-Star selections

One is a Dodger.  One is a Giant.  Name them.

2) Which pitcher won the most games in a season without winning the Cy Young award? Which pitcher lost the most games in a season while winning the Cy Young award? Hint: Both played on the same team, for multiple years.

3) What do the following Hall of Famers have in common? Babe Ruth, Tom Seaver, Ken Griffey Jr., Rube Waddell, Sparky Anderson.

4) In Barry Bonds' iconic 73 HR season, he was walked intentionally 120 times. How many times was Roger Maris walked intentionally the year he hit 61 HRs?

5) In 1921, Reuben Berman sued the New York Giants baseball team and won. What did he win, for which baseball fans have been forever grateful?
