Hansen followed the following team/coach Twitter accounts since the conclusion of our season:
- UNLV Football (duh)
- Ole Miss DC Chris Partridge
- Old Dominion HC Ricky Rahne
- Kansas DC DJ Eliot
- Fired UW TE coach Jordan Paopao (who is now also on UNLV's staff)
- Colorado DL coach Jimmy Brumbaugh
- UW HC Jimmy Lake
- LSU DC Dave Aranda
- Wisconsin DC Jim Leonhard

So it seems somewhat clear he was shopping around.

I wonder how much of this was encouraged versus instigated by Hansen himself.  Hansen spent 7 years as our LB coach, which seems like a fairly long tenure for a position coach.  On the one hand, the Stanford job probably promised about as good job stability as you can expect as a college position coach.  On the other hand, his prospects of advancing by staying were probably limited as one presumes that if there were an internal candidate to replace Anderson were he to leave, that Akina (who has DC experience) would be the inside track.

Really?? I would hate to think that because someone has friends/colleagues in the same business on twitter that he follows one can conclude that person is looking for a job. I suspect many if not most people these days would fit that category. Is it common for coaches to advertise their openings on twitter? Granted, most job offers come through networking, but I find it a far reach to conclude that because you have a network, you are looking for a job.

All in the span of one month, when not a single other Stanford coach was doing so?

I didn't interpret "followed" as the act of adding a person of interest, but rather saying who those of interest were. I assume fron your reply that you meant the former. That timing makes it more probable it was job search related, I must admit. The fact other Stanford coaches were not doing something similar probably proves nothing, but if he added all these guys after the season ended, I would agree it is job related.

Good sleuthing Sam.  It is of course hard to distinguish between good networking practices and networking specifically to try to find a new job.  We would obviously have to know what Hansen was doing after previous season conclusions.  It is hard for me to judge because in my world we all use LinkedIn, but given the pervasiveness of twitter for recruiting purposes, I could easily see it being extended for coaching searches, especially since follows would allow DMs between coaches, and would be an easy way to contact someone and ask if they needed an experienced LB coach.  Or, as Goose says, it could just be general networking.

Cal, Oregon, Washington, WSU all will have have new OC in 2020. Cal also hired new OL and RB coaches.

one indicator of people where I work looking for a new job is lots of new connections on LinkedIn, which is one reason you should not have LinkedIn broadcast your new connections.........

People simply must be held accountable for performance or the entire enterprise will go down hill.

Here is some data that may be of help;
https://sports.usatoday.com/ncaa/salaries/football/assistant

USA Today collects and publishes assistant coach salaries from public schools. So, we don’t have the actual data from Stanford, but we have figures from most pac 12 schools.

Generally, pac 12 schools have 3-6M for assistant coach salaries. At UCLA, the qb coach makes 450k and Don Pellum, the lb coach, makes 400k.

The outgoing dc from unlv made 200-250k.

So, Hansen’s new job may entail a paycut of close to 50%.

Anyway, I am grateful for Hansen’s past service and wish him well. I know many former coworkers who found the right opportunity for them and did well, and I wish this for him.

As for Stanford and its staff, the salary disparity would indicate Stanford has been driving this process, and, instead of booting employees like USC, perhaps Stanford gives them space to find a new landing spot. But the search for Hansen’s replacement may have already been underway for a while.

UNLV will be sharing the Raiders new stadium in Vegas and the university administration is looking to upgrade the football program with a vision of becoming a Boise State south (or more), so it wouldn't be much of a stretch to posit that their pool of funds for coaches may have been bumped up.

Considering the cost of living Palo Alto vs Vegas leads me to doubt that this is a financial retreat from Moscow type move for Hansen and his family (2 young kids). Plus, his new title, and the prospect of demonstrating competence in that role with a growing program, in a great media market (bar is not particularly high @ UNLV right now) would appear awfully compelling to even a Palo Alto native who played for his father @ Paly.
