And now it’s tied bottom of 9

And we lose.
UCLA the Pac 12 champ

RE: Baseball at ASU - 76lsjumb - 05-23-2019

So...can we stop worrying about the stupid RPI now?

RE: Baseball at ASU - StanfordMatt - 05-23-2019

It was a matter of time for Little. Entering tonight, he had been hit hard and given up five runs in his last five innings of work even though the team had still managed to win each game. His only clean outing was last week versus OSU's 7-8-9 hitters. Better to flush it out his system now than next week.

RE: Baseball at ASU - BobK - 05-23-2019

Great point Matt certainly better now than next week.

RE: Baseball at ASU - Papa John - 05-23-2019

I hate to second-guess the manager, but why intentionally walk Carter Aldrete--nephew of Stanford great Mike Aldrete--to load the bases with no outs? I know that the runner on first doesn't matter since it was a one-run game, but you've left your pitcher no margin for error, and the batters know that he's going to throw strikes.

Leftcoast - Leftcoast - 05-24-2019

Well .... That one hurt.  5-4 Solar Satans in a come from behind late inning win - 4 runs by the bad guys in the bottom of the 9th.

It happened earlier this season vs USC as well and I had a very tough time telling them apart on my phone.

We're up 2-1, B3, but Beck seems to have been wearing a couple of runners every inning.

Bellafronto went yard and we're now up 3-1,  B4.

I like Nick Bellafronto.  Third best OPS of the regulars/semi-regulars.  Hope he continues to play well.

No doubt Little has not looked very strong as of late. It doesn't seem to be velocity but I think he's been missing with his slider and his fastball seems straighter than I remember.

The only problem with "Better to flush it out now" is that it is not at all clear that this disaster means anything is flushed and will now improve. Sudden improvement can happen, particularly associated with some definite event, but more often not.

We do have two interesting cases of sudden pitching improvement this year.
Palisch was really struggling as a starter and improved remarkably since going to the pen. His last start was vs UCLA at which point his ERA was 5.93. Since then he had one poor appearance (vs Gonzaga), otherwise has only allowed one earned run, and his overall bullpen ERA has been 2.25 and no runs allowed in his most recent 8 appearances.
Grech was also struggling early, with his ERA going as high as 5.40 after that same Gonzaga game. Then he stopped starting his windup with his hands way over his head and the movement on his pitches got way better. Since that game, he's given up 1 run in 12 appearances to get his ERA back to 3.08.

---------
Anyway, that was certainly an extremely painful last inning to watch. Just a couple of hours earlier my son's little league team did the exact same thing - though because it was little league it was about twice as many runs.

Until the ninth it was a pretty strong game on the road versus a tough opponent. [Though of course there were some things ... bases loaded and no outs leading to zero runs is terrible.]
Despite not exactly mowing down the ASU hitters, I was mildly encouraged by Beck's performance. I thought he looked crisper in his pitches, though he still couldn't get through the fifth inning.

I wonder if we'll see Dieter or Williams out of the pen the rest of the series?

RE: Baseball at ASU - StanfordMatt - 05-24-2019

Just as we all predicted, a pitchers’ duel is shaping up tonight. 9 up, 9 down for both teams through three.

RE: Baseball at ASU - JJJ - 05-24-2019

Game 2 underway.
Will the Thrill on the mound.
Bellafronto and Tawa flashing good leather on D.
0-0 after 3.
Unfortunately, I have to rely on the DVR later for the rest of the game.

RE: Baseball at ASU - StanfordMatt - 05-24-2019

Matthiessen helping his own cause with a solo HR in the 5th. Card up 1-0 heading to B5.

And he’s still cruising on the mound. A few hard hit balls from ASU but they all found Stanford gloves. 15 up and 15 down through five.

Mr. Matthiessen have yourself a ball game. Pitching a perfect game on the mound and now he comes up with a 2-run double with 2 outs in the 6th to increase the lead to 3-0. Next man up is Dascbach who fights one off the other way for a ground rule double. 4-0 Stanford now.

Yes, I realize “fights one off” doesn’t usually translate to a ground rule double but that’s what happened. Just goes to show Daschbach’s pure power.

Just an atrocious call from umpire crew now as they overturn an ASU double that bounced off the top of the wall and call it a HR thinking it bounced off the scoreboard and back into play. Wasn’t even close and to overturn it when they had the correct call originally is a joke. Anyways, 4-1 now in B6.

RE: Baseball at ASU - StanfordMatt - 05-24-2019

Blown HR call probably a moot point as ASU follows up with a hard hit single. Matthiessen starting to labor but goes out on a high note as he strikes out Torkelson. Weiermiller coming out of the pen to face ASU left handed bats with 2 outs and runner on 1st. Sensational outing for Will.

Weiermiller gets the job done as he walks one but induces an out from presumptive top 5 pick Hunter Bishop. Bellafronto recording the out on one of his patented over the shoulder basket catches in foul territory - at least his third such catch of the season. Heading to T7 up 4-1.

Tawa leads off the 7th with a single and for the second inning in a row we get a clutch 2-out RBI double off the wall - this time courtesy of Stowers. Stretch time in Tempe. Weiermiller heading back out for his second inning of work with a 5-1 lead.

RE: Baseball at ASU - StanfordMatt - 05-24-2019

MAVERICK HANDLEY!!! B7 was looking like trouble as a solo HR cut the lead to 5-2 and back-to-back walks with one down had the Devils in business. But Handley back picks the runner off first and two pitches later Grech gets the strikeout to end the rally.

Have a feeling we might need some more runs from the offense to close this one out.

No runs for the Card in T8 but it wasn’t without drama. ASU skipper Tracy Smith got ejected for arguing a safe/out call at first that looked as though the umps got right. Next batter is Kinamon who hit a ball down the RF line that was ruled foul but was awfully close. Daschbach likely would’ve scored on the play, instead Kinamon flies out to RF to end the inning.

Grech back out to work the 8th. Tawa, Grech and Kinamon with a trio of strong defensive plays to sit the Devils down in order. Impressive work yet again from Grech, especially considering how many pitches he threw last night. Will be interesting to see who Esquer calls upon for the 9th. Have to think that Little is unavailable and Grech has pitched a ton the past two nights. Maybe Jensen? Would definitely be the highest leverage situation of his young career.

Tawa continues his strong night with a leadoff double. Bellafronto bunts him over to 3rd and Robinson will get to bat with the infield drawn in. Insurance run would obviously be brobdingnagian.

And looks like I was wrong as Little appears to be warming in the pen.

Robinson can’t deliver but Stowers comes through as we get ANOTHER 2-out RBI. Clutch hitting on display tonight. 6-2 now.

RE: Baseball at ASU - martyup - 05-24-2019

Scary ending considering what happened last night.  We get the 6-4 win. Rubber match tomorrow. GO CARD!

RE: Baseball at ASU - StanfordMatt - 05-24-2019

Whew! Despite having Little and Palisch ready in the pen, Esquer stuck with Grech. It wasn’t simple as the Devils launched a 2-run homer to cut the lead to 6-4, but Grech stayed in and got the 27th out. Big time win. Rubber match tomorrow at noon!

RE: Baseball at ASU - OutsiderFan - 05-25-2019

If a top 8 seed is off the table, does winning the ASU series do anything material for Stanford? I’ve seen other top 8 ranked teams lose in conference tournaments this week, so also wonder if the top 8 is still a fluid situation.

RE: Baseball at ASU - BobK - 05-25-2019

Bottom of 2nd today no score
It’s on the HD Pac 12 channel

RE: Baseball at ASU - StanfordMatt - 05-25-2019

Too many strikeouts from our hitters today. ASU pitcher is average at best and he has a career-high 10 Ks through 5. ASU solo HR has them up 2-0 in B5.

Miller departs with 2 outs in the 7th having given up 2 ER, 4 hits, 3 walks and 5 K’s. That’s a new season high for Miller in terms of innings pitched. Will take that from him every time. Alex Williams on in relief with a runner on 1st.

RE: Baseball at ASU - martyup - 05-25-2019

Burzell in for ASU.  We need to rock his world and take this game.

RE: Baseball at ASU - StanfordMatt - 05-25-2019

Matthiessen gets on with a single in the 9th. Daschbach then drives one that’s caught at the warning track. Kinamon wears a fastball on the back to bring up Tawa with 2 on and 2 out. Still 2-0 Devils. Time for some Tawa Pawa!
