Check out how well "gelled" our offensive line was in 2011 at the 8:22 mark of this video. That's a machine.

Thanks for posting that. It is instructive to look at the run at the 53 second mark. We had six lineman, one tight end, and a fullback. Virginia Tech had 9 players in the box (and a tenth one just outside the frame). No deception whatsoever, and yet we still managed to get a big run out of it.

When Fleener motions back over to the left side, watch that VT defender back the heck up knowing that Fleener is capable of burning defenders with speed...and then that defender is out of position to help as Stewart adroitly slips past a tackler and gets into the backfield.
I miss those days. I'm so glad I went to those bowl games.

I have seen the big run by Taylor at around 2:50 used as an example in a couple of tutorials on Power.
It's a no receiver set, 11 Hokies within 3 yards of the LOS. Some bad angles by Hokies (Marecic can barely get to the kick-out block because the defender runs so wide - but it's so wide that he takes himself out of the play). Some devastating blocks by Stanford guys.

My impression was that those excessive shifts never actually did any good. You'll note that play at 8:22 went for no gain.
The shifts did tend to really annoy opposing coaches, which may have had a certain value right there.

I think those shifts were aimed at coaches who call the defense from the sidelines. It hopefully left them too little time to signal in a new play call to the player who would then "call" the defense on the field. So yes, it did "annoy" those teams a lot. I think nowdays the coaches have a simpler signaling method because up-tempo teams create the same problems. Real quick snaps.

I think those shifts were aimed primarily at showing off [at least the really excessive number of shifts as in the play in question on the video above].

And from that standpoint, Mission Accomplished.
