Reynolds ought to be able to get production out of his guys...he was the Oklahoma DL coach prior to Stanford, and those guys were no slouches.  But I guess none of us have really been impressed yet.

From 2012 -2014, Stanford ranked either first or second in yards allowed in the conference.  Has the present regression resulted from personnel
or coaching or both?

It sure seems like personnel to me, but I do wonder how Mason would have done the last three seasons.

From 2012 - 2014, Stanford ranked either first or second in yards allowed on defense.  Reynolds has been dl coach since 1016 with the regression
apparent.  Is this personnel or coaching?

Personnel everywhere, DL issues (some coaching some not), and horrible ILB recruiting. Helps to keep in mind that the 2012/2013 defenses had nearly EVERYONE drafted or UDFA.

DL issues post 2014:
- Aziz Shittu not granted a medical redshirt after tearing his ACL early in the season one year (I forget which year)
- Medical retirements of Ikenna Nwafor and Wes Annan, the only DTs not named Harrison Phillips and Jordan Watkins (who never broke out and weighed 275 anyways)
- Luke Kaumatule playing a different position every year, instead of staying on the DL after year 2 which should've been the obvious choice if our coaching staff had any shred of understanding of future needs
- Not an "issue" because both of these are blessings and wonderful, but STRICTLY from an unable-to-effectively-contribute perspective: both Bo Peek fathering a child and Michael Williams' heart condition and subsequent successful surgery this past season

In terms of Reynolds’s results, during his first year, he recruited Ryan Johnson and DWP, both of whom he redshirts. His second full year he recruits Booker and Fox.

All of them are top 350 recruits, and it’s the first time I’ve seen Stanford have 4 rated DL’s together.

During Solomon Thomas RSFrosh year, toward the tail end (like the pac12 championship game) he was really asserting himself.

So, by the end of this season, we should have a glimpse of what Reynolds can do with some guys he recruited.

FWIW I re-watched most of the scrimmage last night, and I came away even more excited about Peek, and less negative on DWP. I didn’t see Johnson make any plays, but he seemed to get more comfortable over the course of the day, and seemed to move his man well horizontally.

It’s up to the players to see where they end up, but from the glimpses, in a very good case scenario I could see Peek and Johnson (and to a lesser-extent DWP) becoming disruptors by the end of the season, and Williams and Swann being solid, with 3 more able to contribute if they all advance and grow.

But Peek was the only one I saw make plays with any consistency, though most if not all plays were made against the 2nd string oline (first stringers like Swann and Jackson had tougher oline competition)

No need to be Pollyanna about the DL, and that isn't the intention, but it does seem it's being discounted a bit too much by outside observers. I believe whole-heartedly that the loss of Harrison Phillips from a less than great 2017 unit is leading to some assumptions that may not be true for 2018. "If they weren't that good with Phillips, and they are lost him, they aren't going to be very good."

This is why I always believe College Football is the easiest sport to bet, even though the numbers suggest it's baseball IIRC. Fans who pay attention closer than national guys can clean up early in the season.  By way of example, if Stanford is -14 over SDSU based on an assumption the DL isn't very good, and you think the DL is better than the experts think, lay the points and take Stanford.

Good to hear another plus review on Peek.

My read was that Peek could push back a pocket, at the least.
He generated a lot of force at the point of attack.
And he was relatively late to the game.
He made a jump his senior year and it hinted there might be other jumps to follow.

But I'd factored in the view of another fan, a former player, and decided Peek might not contribute.
Would be big-to-brobdingnagian if he does.
