Today is the day that Franklin (aka Tank) Huang needs to shoot in the 60s. This is his fourth and last time in this tournament. I predicted that the team would need three rounds in the 60s to earn a fourth round. Wu delivered in the first round. Salinda delivered in the second round. Tank - it's time to lock and load!
+13 cumulative is my guess to advance to Monday.

A major key to the round will be getting past the second hole.
The six teams have played it are 26-over on the hole.. 30 guys, +26. It's a par 4.86.
Agreed. We need to shoot +2 today to get to Monday, but that could force us to go at least 1-under to get to the final eight. That would be a remarkable outcome; nothing this season suggest we're a top 10 team. I wish Karl Vilips could declare for college early!

Well, we've moved above the cut line without even stepping foot on the course as teams above us have been racking up bogies. Other than Dook, which seems to have made a pact with the (blue) devil and is a miraculous -12 through 12, the rest of the field seems to be scoring higher than yesterday. Average so far is +2.

I count 13 teams that are in the clubhouse at +16 or better. That leaves 2 more spots above the cut line.
Stanford is currently at +14 as players are making the turn. Looks like they will be in cluster of about 6 teams battling for the final 2 spots. But I don't think they have any shot at top 8 and match play. Kent State currently holds 8th place at +8. Still, it would be a nice accomplishment to get to play tomorrow.
The golf course has played very consistently across 3 rounds judging by the average individual score:
Round 1 - 74.17
Round 2 - 74.30
Round 3 - 74.00 (with half the field still on the course)
The course is giving up good team scores. The course record for a team has been broken every day. Northwestern 280 (-8) on day 1; Alabama 279 (-9) on day 2; Duke 276 (-12) today.
Illinois is at +17 and in 16th place right now. Looks like Stanford has to stay ahead of Illinois to make the cut. The Illini were in great shape near the top 10 until the final 2 holes. They were +5 on 17 and 18 (and that included 2 birdies). You never can feel comfortable on this course until the last player is in the clubhouse and the scorecards are signed.

If I've said this before, I will say it again: Let's get Karl Vilips to leave high school two years early. That little Australian is phenomenal. Saw him ho-hum a 205-yard seven iron. Looked like he was holding back. Also looks about 5'7", 150.
He has as good a position at the top as any player I've ever seen. You see it and think, "there is no way this isn't a purely struck shot."
The little Aussie happens to be a Florida prep school classmate of Aline Krauter of Germany, who will quickly become our favorite Stanford female golfer of all time. She could become a very solid contributor, too.

Brandon and Franklin have, unfortunately, picked bad days to have off rounds. Brandon is +4 through 13, Franklin a ghastly +8 through 11. Stanford at +20, three strokes off the 54-hole cutline.

We need better players. The current men's team has only one player, Huang, who has made a total of one Rolex All American junior team, he as an honorable mention. (Note: Each year's team of 48 includes 12 on each of the first and second teams and 24 honorable mentions.
(Correction: Nate Menon was an HM Rolex All American in 2016.)
The current woman's team, by sharp contrast, has four players who have combined to make 13 Rolex teams, including eight first teams (Lee four, Aubert three, and Liu one).

We are going to have to make up some ground if we want to make the cut. We are 3 strokes out of 15th place with an average of three holes left to play.

The Pac-12 is really struggling at the NCAA Championships this year. Only 1 team (Arizona State) will likely make the 54-hole cut at this point as part of the top 15, and they will need to make up 8 strokes tomorrow to make the last eight. Pac-12 also only sent 4 teams out of 30 (ASU, Stanford, UCLA, and Oregon) to Oklahoma. Contrast that with the SEC, ACC and Big 12, and this is another sport that the Pac-12 has historically been very strong where it seems to be falling behind other conferences (basketball, baseball, football to some degree etc.)

Ouch. Looks like we were the first team out and missed the cut line by a single stroke. All teams above the line are finished, and no one still on the course is even within a few strokes of the line. Brutal ending.
Edited to add: our boys went out in style, though: - 4 on 18. Just needed one fewer bogie on the day..

Stanford actually finished at +20, 2 shots below the cut line according the final round 3 numbers. There may have been a late scoring correction.
However Isiaiah Salinda did qualify as one of the low individuals whose team missed the cut. He will play the final round tomorrow as an individual.
The stats tell a story for Stanford. The team as a whole (including the drop scores) were -21 on the par 5s and +8 on the par 3s. But they were +57 on the par 4s.
It was a season of "almost" for the Cardinal. They finished the NCAAs tied for 16th which is about where they were ranked coming into the tournament.

There must have been. They were at +19 when I posted, but they hadn't been off the course for long.

Indeed, and they did seemed to have performed better than they have at the NCAAs the past few years. We just didn't have either:
(a) several reliable low scores every day (we had a total of only
four below-par scores over all three days: a -3 and -1 on day one, a -3 on day two, and a -3 on day three); or
(b) no more than one bad round each day: each day we had to count one or more relatively high scores (+4s from Huang & Snyder on day one after Swegle was +5; +4s from Snyder & Swegle on day two after Wu went +10, and a +7 from Huang after Snyder went +9 on day three).
Sigh. It does make you appreciate what our women have accomplished, year after year.

We don't have the players.
Our number one, based on NCAA player rankings, would be number five at Oklahoma State and fourth at Vanderbilt.
Our number two would be number five at Alabama and Texas A7M.
We don't need to get better at following the script for succeeding in these events. We need to get better golfers.

Congratulations to Isaiah Salinda whose final round 73 moved him into a T15 overall.
For those that care about the rest of the tournament, the quarterfinals are set. 4 B12, 3 SEC and 1 ACC team. The field includes is a bunch of heavyweights, any of whom who take the crown.
1 Oklahoma State vs. 8 Texas A&M (note - these are top 2 ranked teams in the country)
4 Oklahoma vs. 5 Auburn (the local fans are hoping hoping hoping for an OU-OSU semifinal)
2 Duke vs. 7 Texas
3 Texas Tech vs. 6 Alabama (note - Texas and Alabama played for the national championship in 2012 and could face each other in the semis here)
