“what is Love?”

“baby don’t hurt me, don’t hurt me, no more”

It’ll be interesting to see where Love winds up on the draft boards.  McCaffrey got drafted so high because of his versatility — you also got his receiving and returning skills.  Love hasn’t yet really shown that to the same extent, so I wouldn’t expect him to be a first round player, but beyond that I don’t know where he’d go.

BC

That's why I think him spending an offseason learning receiving/returning (though I doubt he needs that much work at returns) would do wonders to enhance his draft stock.  Right now he is an odd position when it comes to an NFL evaluation. Despite his prodigious skill, he will be seen as too small for an every down back, but without the elite pass-blocking or receiving skills to be a 3rd down back or hybrid RB/slot WR. He would be seen as a "change of pace" guy, and that's not someone you draft in the top 4 rounds. To give a real world illustration, CMac has been doing a lot more damage in the NFL through the air then on the ground, though some of that is surely due to offensive line issues.

I don't know which was more fun though, watching CMac juke people out of their shoes or watching Love make defenders pursuit angles look ridiculous as he runs right by them.

I didn't realize, but Love is number 1 in the nation in rushing yards right now, with 787. Penny of SDSU is second with 716, and 3rd is Brewer of Tulsa, 578, over 200 yards back.

If we turn it around in the win column, we could be talking H word again...

Re: Love?!? - qwerty49 - 09-24-2017

What I love about Love is not only is he fast and shifty, but he runs tough, through tackles the way Stefan Taylor could, but with the same kind of breakaway threat that Nelson and McCaffrey had.  I'm pretty sure Love is just a bit faster than McCaffrey, and I think he and Darren might be a very close matchup over 50-75 yards.  But it's his toughness that sets him apart IMHO.

Re: Love?!? - dabigv13 - 09-24-2017

Agreed. Even though he's a lot smaller than Toby, he has the same tendency to fall forward. Love has really exceeded my expectations, which were already pretty high.

He is incredible. I hope that he takes a page from Cmac's book and spends this offseason turning himself into an elite slot reciever as well as RB.

You think he'll return for another year if he keeps up anywhere near this pace? Will he even play our bowl game?
[/quote]

I don't think he returns or plays in the bowl game at this pace.  He's an incredible runner.  And our bowl game will be second tier, in all likelihood.

On Costello's TD run I think Love got low and stoned a rusher (lb?) to allow KJ to have time getting outside, scanning the field, and then taking off.

He absolutely did.  It was a crushing block, proving Love is no shrinking violet as a "small" RB.

Re: Love?!? - North Woods - 09-25-2017

Odds to win that unnamed trophy that we simultaneously hate, discredit and edit out from texts when typed but still track nonetheless: Love opened at 100-1, was up to 60-1 a week ago and currently is listed as 40-1. This is a four-way tie for 9th best odds at the moment, which is pretty impressive given that he was in MCaffrey's shadow last year and that our team is now unranked.

Darnold is listed at 8-1; Falk, Penny and Browning are also 40-1. Odds listed also include Freeman and Herbert (Oregon); Wimbush (UDFG); Gaskin (UW); Jones (SC)

These can change fast in both directions: Rosen is now 50-1 after opening at 15-1 and sitting at 25-1 before this weekend. Saquon Barkley is the overall favorite at 2-1 after opening at at 20-1 and sitting at 12-1 before this weekend.

For entertainment purposes only of course...

That was a memorable block, a lot of fun to watch.

Re: Love?!? - Hank 91 - 09-25-2017

The most amazing stat for Love is this:
Six games in a row with a run of 50 yards or more. This happens with high school superstars, NOT in the NCAA. As Saturday's game wore on, I noticed each time the Stanford offense crossed midfield, sadly realizing that each such drive, while pushing the Cardinal on to victory, reduced the likelihood that the streak would continue. As it turned out, I shouldn't have been worried. I think I woke up the entire house when he unleashed that last run. "That's six straight games!"

Re: Love?!? - jacketree - 09-25-2017

Saquon Barkley's performance against Iowa probably would have cemented the Heisman if it came in the 11th or 12th game of the season.  I must have seen three or four "Heisman" moments he had, just in that one game. Plus. Penn State. As it is, plenty early.  But Barkley is just flat out fun to watch, as is Love, as is McCaffrey.  That's really all I care about.

Just a reminder that we need to enjoy our RBs while we can.  Gerhart, Taylor, Gaffney, et. al., never really had much of a presence in the NFL.  (Hoping C-Mac will break that pattern.)

What are the chances of the LSJUMB learning one of those before season's end?

They already know "Love Shack"... better than "Stanford Stadium."  [I know it's C-House, but that could be put on the shelf for a while...]

And, of course, there's the perennial favorite: "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" for the away games.  That works, too.

Watched my recording of the game last night after being there Saturday.  Love's block was great but the best part was when the UCLA defender got back up to pursue Costello, he looked back at Love with what I believe was a "What the hell was that?!" look.  Maybe one of our video experts/millenials can provide the link to the clip.

Cheers,
Pete F.

Bunch of fun highlights here, but the one with Love's block on Costello's TD is the clip entitled "Costello lays out for the Stanford TD"

As mentioned above, ESPN is clearly pushing Barkley. Tons of coverage right after our game Saturday night.
