Well, in the interest of not getting too specific:
I found it interesting the entirely different foul pattern between the first half and the second. Â The teams weren\'t really playing that differently, but the Aggies were called for something like 10 of the first 15 fouls called in the game, while Stanford was called for a similar proportion early in the second half. The fact that Stanford had the only two players foul out was kind of weird, considering the foul trouble the Aggies were in early.
I think Adams got away with quite a few shoulder blocks to create room, including ones that ended up being called charges. Â The charge called on Mel was a bit bogus; I think she got fouled on the drive, then ran into an Aggie defender who I think was either under or even on the other side of the hoop (really would like to see the NBA\'s circle under the rim in NCAAs).
I had more arguments with some of the out-of-bounds calls (the one where the ref indicated the ball came off Jeanette\'s toe, when an Aggie defender had basically dived into Jeanette\'s legs and tapped it out, comes to mind).
But Mel\'s 5th was balanced by the one called on Adams late that put Nneka on the line.
The underreported stat of the game? Â A&M 10-10 FTs. Â Stanford 13-19, including the missed front end of at least 2 1and1s.
One other issue? Â TWO LAYUPS IN THE LAST MINUTE? Â Especially the second to last one, where Nneka backed off as White drove, rather than putting her at the line.
A final one. Â Jeanette\'s tendency to not fight her way over picks REALLY cost us. Â Contra MT, the last A&M 3-pointer came when Pohlen got caught way too easily not stepping over a wing pick by Adams, giving Carter a free look at a right-on-the-arc shot.

It doesn\'t seem that Stanford plays very instinctively or sees the game one or two passes ahead of time. Maybe we need a little more streetball style. Not much, just a little.
When A&M plays defense like this and refs don\'t call fouls, it\'s hard not to commit a lot of turnovers.

I\'m not sure the two are connected in our case: running a triangle offense relies on the game intelligence of players; it\'s just that we can\'t hurry the offense and punish a team for the effrontery of trying to press us.

This is one thing that I\'ve suspected about referee instructions. Â I think they\'re told not to give an advantage to one side, so they tend to balance out the called fouls, regardless of the ratio of committed fouls. Â So the team that fouls the most gets relatively fewer of the fouls called.
All game long, A&M, esp. Elonu but some Adams, was throwing her hip out and stepping into the player she was trying to screen. Â To be fair to the officials, the only time they called it was when the defender tripped, which resulted in foul #4 on Chiney at 5:07 left. Â (Perhaps an aspect of being too nice on the court is Stanford not running through the player that steps out to screen.)
VG: I apologize for screwing up which 3ptr it was that Mel left her player. Â It was the score at 10:28 in the 2nd. Â

MT-
No need to apologize. Â I just remembered screaming at the TV screen on that particular shot. Â And actually one of the announcers called her out for it.
One other thing I think we\'re forgetting - the burning of all those timeouts because we were unable to inbound cleanly. Â How much would you have liked to have one of those after Nneka made the last basket? Â And on the last play, watching Mikaela dive in after the ball and then Lindy get completely blown by at the top of the key was painful. Â No way that happens out of any kind of stoppage.

I think VG nailed it when he suggested that Stanford guards tend not to be the slashing/instinctive/creative types. Â Is it because of the kinds of students who tend to be attracted to Stanford? Â Is it Tara\'s highly orchestrated detail-oriented method?
I think Tara chose and developed her philosophy around the kinds of student-athletes she has to work with. Â I would be very interested if any of you here can remember what her Ohio State or Idaho teams were like? Â My guess is that she decided that this style of basketball was well suited to athletes who were just a little nerdier and more studious than most. Â It is not that our athletes are "smarter" (although perhaps they are) so much as it is that they all have good study habits to be in Stanford.
And so a basketball strategy that takes advantage of a strength that most of your players have seems to make sense. Â It particulary made sense in the early 1990s when there were few teams with enough athletic ability to clog up a well oiled machine.
I still am inclined to think that this strategy is probably the best fit for Stanford. Â But hopefully our 3 speedy new guards coming in next year and Toni will make us more flexible in dealing with the likes of A&M

Could someone please explain this inverse relationship between intelligence/studiousness and speed? This has been spouted in football discussions, as well, and I just don\'t get it. (and I was not a sprinter)

I think it\'s a misconception. My guess is that the share of people who are intelligent and studious at a Stanford level is really small and the share of people who are explosively fast is really small and so the share of people who have both qualities at an elite level is really small. Given that intelligence/studiousness is a prerequisite to get into Stanford and explosive quickness is not a prerequisite to be really good at basketball, it\'s no wonder we possess more of the former and less of the latter.
