Amazing comeback on the road.  Plum was sensational but the rest of UW, not so much.  We did a good job on Osahor.  I thought the refs were poor all around.  I don't know if either team got an advantage.  Foul trouble everywhere.  Bri Roberson was fantastic late in the game.  Her shooting was key.  Brit's late steal was the clincher.  Great road win.  I think we could have played a whole lot better in the first half too.

Re: WBB: Stanford 72 Washington 68!!! - TheFarm07 - 01-29-2017

I didn't watch the game until the last 30 seconds. I saw that we were down 21-12 after one quarter, and I couldn't check the score again until the end, so I was very happy that we held UW to 68 points and that we rallied to win the game.

Amazing turnaround it seems at halftime, limiting UW to 23 points in the second half. It seemed like, intentional or not, defensively, that it was the opposite strategy of when we played Griner and Baylor, where we focused on Griner and Sims and dared everyone else to score. From the box score here, it seemed like Plum went off, but we shut the rest of the Huskies down including Osahor and Romeo, which is a difficult task to do.

Sounds like we were clutch offensively as well and when our usual go-to players were covered or struggled, other people stepped up, which is great to see.

As 81 points out, we have the SoCal schools next and we end the season having to go to the Oregon schools while UW's toughest remaining games are at the L.A. schools and home to ASU.

For TheFarm07 and any others who missed part or all of the game, please know that there are reruns of almost all PAC-12 contests, men and women.

Go to Pac-12.com (don't forget the dash in the address) and click WATCH on the top menu. This will result in a drop-down menu from which you select "Pac-12 Network TV Listings." On the TV LISTINGS Web page that follows, select the button right next to TV LISTINGS that reads "Pac-12 Network." On the drop-down menu that follows, you will always have two options to search for replays:

1. Pac-12 Bay Area shows the TV listings for Stanford and Cal games, men's and women's, for most if not all sports. Checking this Pac-12 network, you'll see replays of tonight's 5PM game listed for tonight at 10PM and Wed 2/1 at 1:30AM on the Pac-12 Bay Area Network.

2. You second option will be the listings for our opponent's network, in this case Pac-12 Washington. Checking their TV listings shows replays of tonight's 5PM game listed for tonight at 11PM, Tue 1/31 at 4AM and 11:30PM on the Pac-12 Washington Network.

This was certainly a great game to watch even a second or third time.

Thanks for the tip, Mike.

I read the AP summary updated with quotes and it seems Plum was upset about the 4th foul called against her:

"If anything it's a no-call or a foul on her. I didn't move or anything like that," Plum said (regarding the illegal screen called against her). "I think that completely changed the momentum of the game and was really unfortunate."

Tough. We could probably have said the same about some of the 4 fouls each on McCall and McPhee. Fortunately the winners are seldom tempted to gripe about the officiating.

LOL.  The irony is thick on that one.

But I do agree with her that when foul calls are made that shouldn't, it completely changes the momentum of the game and is really unfortunate.  Though I am sure she doesn't mind the 90% of the time she is the beneficiary of them.

Still, she is one heck of a player.

if she is upset about the officiating, bird should be too. not only she got her 4th foul on a flop by osahor (no way that little contact could bring osahor down) also took away 2 pts as bird shot went in.

A few quotes about the game"

Quote:Washington sank 11 of 19 three-pointers while Stanford was 1 of 11.  That flipped in the second half when UW was 1 of 6 and the Cardinal 5 of 11.  “That’s called having an Hall of Fame coach on your bench,” Neighbors said, referring to VanDerveer. “They made adjustments and I’m not going to be in any hall of fame any time soon. Kudos to them. They made adjustments and we didn’t.”

Quote:Afterward, Plum said she was “upset” with the officiating.  “It’s just really unfortunate because I felt a couple of those fouls that were called on me — like I said I’m not trying to make excuses — but they were not fouls,” Plum said. “And I’m not trying to say that, but usually I don’t get calls like that. It was just tough luck.”

"Tara basically got on me to look at the basket and let the shots fly," Roberson said. "Teammates did a very good job of finding me. It's awesome to see what no hesitation does and confidence and looking for the first shot."

I think Plum is right about the 4th foul on her.  But the fourth foul on Erica, coming with 3:21 left in the third, was a worse call in several respects.  It took two sure points and a three point play away from us, it happened earlier in the game than Plum's call giving us a longer stretch, and it should have been Osahor's fourth foul rather than McCall's.

Pretty much anytime somebody says, "I'm not [...], but ...", they are [...].

[Despite the snarky comment, I am very sympathetic to Plum here. She was exhausted, just lost a heartbreaker of a game where she played very well in front of a home crowd. Tough situation. Things slip out. ]

Was Ernie Filaberti the last decent West Coast ref?

Re: WBB: Stanford 72 Washington 68, silencing Husky sell-out. - FarmDad.01 - 01-30-2017

In two decades of following WBB, I can't think of a more satisfying *conference* win. Overcoming an 18-pt deficit in front of a road crowd of 10K... McPhee's late-game stuff of Plum's point-blank shot... McPhee's subsequent sideline steal and breakaway score... this one will be hard to beat. (btw: Plum and Osahor are still way ahead when it comes to favorable ref's calls.)

It is a difficult call - one that we've had called several times against us all season. Dribbling towards a teammate and handing them the ball while picking off their defender. Is it a moving screen or a blocking foul? Don't know but that wasn't an egregious call. They've made that many times.

But the call I was upset about what the one 81alum is talking about. Erica came down with the rebound and went back up. Osahor looked liked she was under the basket inside the circle and fouled Erica as she went up and it should have been an +1 three point play. That's the kind of foul Kelsey Plum has made NCAA history of most foul shots getting called as a shooting foul in her favor. Poor losers.

Re: WBB: Stanford 72 Washington 68, silencing Husky sell-out. - Jskass - 01-30-2017

Let's also remember all the non-calls on Plum's elbows. IIRC, Karlie got a block foul called on her when it was clear that Plum threw an elbow to initiate contact.

Re: WBB: Stanford 72 Washington 68, silencing Husky sell-out. - will - 01-30-2017

This was a great win but it was an ugly win.

Plum learned the hard way that you cannot try to outscore the other team all by yourself and not involve any of your teammates as they ultimately will stand around and watch and not be able to contribute down the stretch in a tight game.

WA played the numbers game they left Bri, Marta and Brit open, face guarding and then doubling Karlie, it almost paid off, as Brit was 7/20 and took some very bad shots. Someone needs to tell her that taking a 3 on first pass when your team is not even down the court from D is a bad shot when you only shoot 26% from that distance, they are leaving you open for a reason and you wasted valuable possessions by doing that. Bri however took advantage, stepped up and knocked them down, that was the difference in the game. Even Marta knocked down a wide open 3 that she received from Karlie from a double team. Plum was in foul trouble and they were fouls as she cannot play defense, when she tries she fouls. She cannot complain about calls when Osahor should be fouling out every game going over Bird and Kaylees back and Karlie was fouled on 2 of her 3s which was not called. No way Bird charged Osahor the immovable object, that was the worst flop of the game.

The defensive plan finally paid off, with Karlie helping on the posts particularly Osahor, who was 1 for 10, that was also the difference in the game and the adjustment at half time in not giving Plum as many 3s by playing up a little more.

WA tries to expose the pick and roll with Bird and unfortunately Bird cannot read it for some reason. The whining by both Osahor and Plum are why I am so glad we beat them, they are not good losers.

The replay showed Plum hitting Bri on the arm and also hip checking on the screen both were fouls.

I already had the impression that this team would fight through anything, and this game proves it.  All future opponents should take note.  A great victory by the whole team, with some standouts.

The worst call was Osahor's flop.  Why are PAC-12 refs SO gullible?  If a player gets hit in the chest, and then throws her head back to fall backward, it is a flop.  I remember as a young child being taught to do flips on a trampoline:  throw your head the way you want to go.
  Examples:

Anyone know why laying across an opponent's body (usually legs) is not considered a foul?  In the 3rd at 4:53, you can see Oashor reaching up between the crotch of Britt as Britt is on her knees, and then Osahor falls on UW #10 onto Britt's legs..

There were SO many uncalled fouls by Osahor, it was unreal.
