Pretty much yes. Teams in NCAA playoff events can participate in their events, but everyone else takes the time off. That's been true for a long time.  And it is a good policy.  The coaching staff should know how quickly teams can successfully get back to full strength.  However, since Winter Quarter ends during the NCAA tournament it actually is a good thing for the players to experience a tough bounce back game so that they can prepare for the more challenging dead week in a few months.

I doubt this team will make the NCAA tournament so not much benefit to learning how to play after finals. I'd rather see them be able to take some extra fall units and excel so they can stay ahead of the unit requirements.

Now that's funny.  I watched a few minutes of the first half and got bored.  Stanford needs a few years of good recruiting although their record thus far isn't bad.

The Pac-12 is looking pretty strong at the top.

For men's hoops that is likely true this year, but still happy to see the staff preparing for success rather than failure.  And the dead/finals week question applies to WBB too.  And there, those contests against UConn and/or Tennessee right after fall finals always seemed to have that March prep element to them.  Would love to MBB to return to a similar place on the national landscape, but it will probably be a few more years.

Absolutely brilliant.  I agree Reid Travis should just hang it up now since his team won't likely make the big dance and he is the only player on the roster likely to be drafted.

And then we should all thank Reid for all he's given to the school & program, wish him well, and not worry about him missing the last 15+ games of the season.

I dont agree with what CM did but as I assume you know, there is no comparison. Reid needs to prove himself, CM doesnt.

That said, CM's decision would have been received very differently if he had just said, "if the Band cant go, I wont play". ;)

In happier news, Draft Express -- probably the best NBA draftnik out there -- is impressed by incoming recruit Oscar da Silva in a recent European tournament:

"Germany advances to semis, books a spot in U19 World Championship behind a fantastic all-around performance by Stanford-bound Oscar da Silva"

"Oscar Da Silva, a 6'9 forward who played everywhere from 2-5 here in Samsun, made so many big plays for Germany. Incredible get for Stanford"

I wonder about that.  He gained almost 1,500 yards fewer this season, played three fewer games and had mid-year injuries and nagging injuries.  Sitting out two extra weeks of football practice and a game to ... uh... prepare for football tryouts strikes me that he's a durability risk.  Will scouts and GMs want him as much, now that he's taking the foot off the accelerator?

Let's also remember that CM was held out of Spring practice this past year.  Maybe someday a fuller picture of the nagging injuries and/or concerns may emerge.  Who knows.
