Another odd OT comment/thread from Ferrari.

That said,  Jackson needed to go. He was a bad choice. For some reason the rotation of people on currencies became less frequent in the 20th century.  Jackson was never a credible symbol for the concept of government backed paper currency.  Happy to know the kept Hamilton and ditched Jackson.  Three cheers there.

IMHO Tubman?  mehh.  Not that it matters.

Reagan?  LOL!  He is not bumping any of the others any time soon.

FWIW - Obama as the first Muslim (LOL2) and the first Kenyan born (LOL3) will easily get on a US currency before most others because he is a unique figure in US history. The other recent presidents simply don't have that type of first (fill in the blank) cache.  Serving as the first African-American will be more than enough to bump him up the line.

FWIW2 - Hillary Clinton won't need to wait in line either.  Should she become President I would suspect she would be on US currency even before her husband, for similar reasons to those noted above.  Lots of old white guys, but there would be only one first female US President.

FWIW3 - It doesn't really matter since paper currency's role in the economy will continue to dwindle over the next 20-30 years.

Lefty,

If a Roosevelt were to take over the $20 bill, it would have been Eleanor. The push was for a woman, and high time too. Mrs. Roosevelt was one of the finalists. http://www.womenon20s.org/

The law prohibits portraits of living persons from appearing on Government Securities. Therefore, the portraits on our currency notes are of deceased persons whose places in history the American people know well.

Ferrari you need to read up on "LOL"  LOL :D

Re: In defense of the $20 bill. - Farm93 - 04-24-2016

Ferrari,

Your just kidding lagged your initial post in this thread by some time.  LOL type things lagging that far behind the initial post don't quite work the same way.  Very confident you knew that.

That said.  You have a very rich history of inserting...shall we say... right of center political opinions into threads that had no prior political leanings at all.  So even if you had put in that just kidding or LOL in that original post, I would have doubted its sincerity on this topic.

Not super sure you got my LOL references in real time, but whatever.

Also not sure I see this need for some odd racial purity and didn't see an LOL there.  As most know there are virtually zero African Americans that have a family trees comprised of exclusively African descendants.  Those slave owners often inserted their DNA into the mix.

I'm a newcomer here, but for what it's worth, I am of the view that political debates are best left for another forum. While we all may reasonably disagree as regards our political sentiments, we all agree with the sentiment, "Go Stanford!" That's what draws me to this forum, and so the more we focus on that, as far as I'm concerned, the better. Off-topic threads on music, art, (and even the goings on on campus re great books protests, etc.) and so on can be fun too, but I think we're all better off if we steer clear of matters of broader politics, as I think there's a lot more to be lost than to be gained. Just my two cents. Go Cardinal!

Had dinner with my daughter and her roommate.  The roommate was joking about her mom and the way she texted.

She said the first couple of months her mom kept lol'ing at inappropriate times, and it turns out her mom thought it meant "lots of love".

Yeah ... I thought twice before posting the poll given some of the bitter debates of the past months.  Here's why I went ahead.

Great off-topic discussions have been a hallmark of the Cardboard community since the very early days.  Debate was usually civil despite diverse and opposing opinions because people mostly abstained from ad hominem attacks and pulled back when conversation turned angry.  The best of these conversations reminded me of those great dorm-room bull sessions that figure prominently in the memory of my undergrad years.

I hope open discourse among Stanford people can remain a Cardboard value rather than letting fear of discord turn this into a "just sports" community.  For that to happen each of us may need to do a little self censoring occasionally when a topic turns heated or the one poster who rubs one of us wrong posts.

I keep hearing this!  This appears to be a common misunderstanding among older, less tech-savvy folks.  There's an older woman at my office who was trying to send condolences to a friend when her cat died, and sent "So sorry your cat died. LOL."  She did not get the response she was expecting.

Perfectly appropriate.

Just my 2 cents...I would have preferred someone like Rosa Parks.  While I can appreciate Tubman's role in history, she seems far removed from our lives today.  As a more contemporary figure, Parks and her image would bring to mind a lot more inspirational imagery than someone I only read about in history class.

Leave it to a comic strip to make sense of it all.
