Re: WBB: Stanford 69 Oregon 42 - BobK - 02-28-2016

Great game and great posts about the game.

Bando hardly played so Oregon basically without 2 starters and 3 of top 8.

Brenner played Beach Volleyball. That's 5 sports.  Amazing women

So many great plays and players this weekend.  On to Seattle where are are the feature game Friday  night.  Well they've anticipated that we play Washington of course 😄

Let's also not forget that Washington will also be fighting to secure a berth in the NCAA tourney. They are a #8 seed in the latest ESPN Bracketology, but I am sure securing a win over us would boost their chances on Selection Monday and make them feel safer as the bracket is revealed.

Oregon State will surely want revenge after the drubbing we gave them as well.

This is when we need to pick it up. Erica, as good as she has been over the last couple games will need help from everyone. Bri, Marta, Kaylee and Kailee will need to make them pay when they sag off of them. Brit will have to continue with their aggressive mentality. Karlie will need to nail contested 3-point shots, because she won't get too many open looks and Lili will need to find some consistency amidst the rough times she has been going through.

This is when our depth can help us. Our rotation can dip to 9 deep without sacrificing too much (Lili, Bri, Marta, Kaylee, Kailee, Karlie, Brit, Alanna and Erica) and if we are going to win 3 games in 3 days against tough opposition, we'll need contributions from everyone.

Re: WBB: Stanford 69 Oregon 42 - M T - 02-29-2016

With the way the team played this weekend, and Lili's struggles of late, who will start in the next game?

I suspect those of you who think the offense won this game will say Lili should play.  Those of us who think defense won this game will say we hope Lili will be a spark off the bench.

No matter how good one thinks Lili is, it would be hard to argue that these last two games haven't been the best played by Stanford.  Call it chemistry, call it height, I don't care.  With the way Stanford played this weekend, I'd go with the same starting lineup until an opponent has it figured out.

We played a smothering defense for the second straight game.  Oregon was held to 29% shooting, with something like 4 failures to get a single shot off.  The team with the 2nd best 3pt% in the NCAA made a total of two 3 pointers. (They only attempted 8.)  Once we got our big lead, the refs wound up turning blind eyes towards fouls committed against Stanford but kept calling fouls on Stanford.

I'm hoping that it won't be long before Marta is a consistent asset, but she was just not in synch with the other players today.  4 TO in 15 minutes is a rate of more than 10 TO in 40 minutes.  The rest of the team had 18 assists to 8 turnovers (one TO was the immediate consequence of a steal).

Yes, our offensive boards were great.  I expect that is partly due to the absence of Alleyne.

I was a little surprised, but pleased, that the outcome of ASU - UCLA game didn't affect that we were seeded on the same half of the PAC-12 bracket as OSU.  Interesting matchups for the semis.  If all they teams with Byes win their first game, the two top seeded teams will have to play a team that beat them the week before.  I may have to go watch a replay of the ASU - UCLA game.

I thought that was a great rebound & put-back by Kailee.
Wonderful 11 minutes for Kiran. (Might she have eligibility left? Perhaps she might not play at Stanford, but somewhere else?)
Bird was obviously the player of the game, again.  She is definitely showing what we've thought she was capable of.  Add to that 4 steals!
Karlie wasn't quite as sharp as usual today, but she burned Oregon with those assists.
Brittany's office wasn't as big as the previous game, but she was definitely a part of the bull dog defense.
Bri got into double figures, with 4 steals and 4 assists.  Great.
Alanna showed some good plays but still is too much an international-player, playing just a bit more physical than the refs want.

Great game to start the second thousand wins...

Great wins by the team this weekend! So pumped to see Bird develop like this.

I agree. I kind of don't want to mess with a good thing. I'm not sure that means Lili stays on the bench, but I do think we need to start both Karlie and Brit at the 2-3 - it gives us height and mobility, and keeps defenses from being able to sag and defend our posts.

(02-29-2016, 05:14 AM)garvin link Wrote:Are you saying Lili Thompson is a defensive liability? She sure doesn't seem like one to me.

I agree. I think she's great on defense. But with her scoring production really unpredictable, coupled with the fact that I really do think our two best games of this season were with a taller lineup and only one short guard, I guess I would prefer to see more rotation of Karlie and Brit than Lili/Bri/Marta. I also think we can afford to lose a little on defense in order to prevent a stagnant offense. Our defense was great against both Oregon State and Oregon. And given the number of feeds Karlie gave to Bird this weekend, she's clearly very capable of playing the 2 and distributing the ball. That said, I do think of our shorter guards, Lili should still be our go-to. And I think she might relish the 1 spot more if she isn't being asked to generate most of our offense. Our early season struggles with her at the 1 were due to the fact that she was also our primary scoring option. Based on this past weekend, that is hopefully less and less the case!

Re: WBB: Stanford 69 Oregon 42 - 81alum - 02-29-2016

Do we know for a fact that Lili will be back next weekend?  I presume she will be, but have heard nothing official.  The last week of winter quarter is fast coming up too, so it is not a good time to be away.

Was Lili's grandfather ill for some time?  I wonder if we are dealing with a Kevin Hogan type situation here--that one of the reasons Lili has been less focused in the last few weeks has been this family situation.  Her family seems very close.  I certainly hope she is able to come back and focus on her classes and the time she missed, and basketball too of course.  But it can't be easy jumping in and out of your normal routines.  I would guess Tara will work her back in gradually--just a hunch.

If Lili is ready to go, I can see her at the 1 much of the time.  Bri is making that decisions harder, given that Bri's offense has been steadily improving for the last couple of weeks.  A month ago Bri could not hit the side of a barn.  Marta can give us valuable minutes and her assists are sometimes spectacular, but neither her offense nor her turnovers warrant a starting role as we head into the tournaments.

I mentioned Kiran as a person who could get more minutes many weeks ago when our guards started slumping.  At the beginning of the season Kate mentioned her as one of the best three point shooters on the team.  And she is tall for a guard.  I haven't really studied how her defense stacks up against the best perimeter players.  She is clearly competent--but what would a Kelsey Plum do to her?  I just don't know.  She talked about possibly pursuing a master's degree before going to medical school--so that does sound like she might play another year or two somewhere.  How about a MPH at San Francisco State playing for Jennifer Azzi for a couple of years before heading back down the road for med school? :)

Re: WBB: Stanford 69 Oregon 42 - BobK - 02-29-2016

Kiran spoke about a gap year before Med School. Doubt she would play elsewhere.  Jennifer is at USF of course.  We saw Kran play D, we know the answer.  No fault of hers, she hasn't played much college basketball.    :)

Re: WBB: Stanford 69 Oregon 42 - FarmDad.01 - 02-29-2016

Presumably, Stanford's Friday game will be vs. Washington. I don't know who back in January were the primary defenders of Kelsey Plum in the Cardinal win. In any case, she had a bad shooting night but made 11 free throws because refs were loath to whistle her lowered-inside-shoulder drives to the hoop.

Given how McPhee shut down OSU's 5'10" Jamie Weisner the other night, I think assigning her to shadow the 5'8" Plum--and to harass the 3-ball--is reason enough to warrant a start.

Re: WBB: Stanford 69 Oregon 42 - 2006alum - 02-29-2016

McCall was just named ESPNW's player of the week. Well deserved! Congratulations to her!

Re: WBB: Stanford 69 Oregon 42 - Jskass - 02-29-2016

Way to go, Erica!
My view is that I'd stick with the same starting lineup for all the reasons mentioned, with Lili first off bench at PG for Bri. Allows her a transition back, plus let's remember that quite often Lili starts slowly and her offense picks up second half.

I was wondering the same thing about frame of mind/emotions impacting Lili's inconsistency this year. In addition to her grandfather, she lost her aunt in the fall and was also VERY close with her. It's obviously been an extremely difficult 6-9 months for her.

Don't group me in with "you guys!" I'd start her at the 1 as long as she's back. My rooting interest is in getting Karlie and Brit on the floor at the same time, because I think it's really opened up our offense and enabled Erica to score from all over the floor. She remains, unquestionably, our best guard. I think the main thing is just whether she might need/want more time to mourn and adjust back to bball.

Re: WBB: Stanford 69 Oregon 42 - FarmDad.01 - 02-29-2016

Since only five players can start, the main question heading into the postseason is two small guards or one. If Tara goes with two, expect McPhee on the bench for the opening tip.

Some 30-game stats:

Min/game -- Thompson, 31. Roberson, 24. McPhee, 17.
Pts/game -- Thompson, 14.4. Roberson, 6.2. McPhee, 6.8.
Reb (total) -- Thompson, 102. Roberson, 67. McPhee, 95.
FTA (total) -- Thompson, 99. Roberson, 37. McPhee, 72.

The last two lines suggest a productive aggressiveness, for a non-big, that in recent years I feel only Toni Kokenis has matched. Which is why I think McPhee should start, probably at the 3 with Samuelson at the 2.

I don't see a downside if Thompson and Roberson stay fresher by sharing the 1.

I don't care which of McPhee or Samuelson plays 2 or 3.  I'll take any defensive dropoff to have both of them on the floor and Thompson running point.  Besides, I think any defensive dropoff having Thompson at 1 is mitigated by McPhee's defensive upside

Re: WBB: Stanford 69 Oregon 42 - BobK - 02-29-2016

You mention our top 3 defensive players win. What drop off on D are you talking about?

There seemed to be an implication that playing McPhee in place of Robertson and moving Thompson to the 1 would be a defensive dropoff.  Or did I misread that?

The closest I can think to this idea is that I seem to recall someone mentioning a chalk talk where one of the assistant coaches had cited to McPhee's ball handling and turnovers as a liability (and a reason for why she wasn't a starter even during our awful offensive outputs vs. Arizona St. and UCLA). I think at the start of the season, the coaches' view was that McPhee's offensive output wasn't sufficient to outpace her defensive liabilities (in terms of creating fast breaks or extra shots for the opposing team). So not so much that she didn't provide sound defense, but that it created too many opportunities for the opposing offense.  I think that's a really hard claim to make given recent results, especially as Bri has dropped off and Marta still hasn't developed a consistent jump shot.

Re: WBB: Stanford 69 Oregon 42 - JJJ - 02-29-2016

In case anyone was wondering, I have it on good authority that the band will not be traveling to Seattle. Not surprising since technically this isn't the "post-season" yet.

Re: WBB: Stanford 69 Oregon 42 - BobK - 02-29-2016

Don't know if you misread or the poster was just wrong, but Lili is avery good D player.  It's her shooting that has been off.

Great minds think alike. Enjoyed the game today, though my vocal support chased two people away from sitting in front of me!

Can we just exile all these people to a special part of Maples? Or better yet, have them stay home and watch with the volume off?

You can sit by me anytime!

Or by me!
I have chased a few away myself. I am the loud one behind the band, complaining about moving screens.

that ostensibly was my point - transition back.

Re: WBB: Stanford 69 Oregon 42 - CompSci87 - 02-29-2016

FWIW: You get four years of eligibility that have to be used during a 5-year period starting from when you enroll. Kiran played as a freshman and a senior. So she could play one more year if she is in school next year. But as mentioned, she is graduating and thinking of taking a gap year. The gap year would run out the 5-year clock.
