Quote:Who cares if the players want to wear black? With the exception of the occasional James McGillicuddy, they mostly haven\'t been at Stanford long enough to have any sense of tradition. If they decide they\'d like the team to be the Packers (or the Redskins!), do we do that, too? How about if they want to start playing at Candlestick?
Tradition is a key differentiator between college and pro football. It\'s why we play for the Axe. It\'s why the California schools continue to play one another in the Pac-12. It\'s why Texas A&M has a bonfire. It\'s why Michigan\'s loss record against Ohio State meant more than its winning record overall. It\'s why Punt \'Bama Punt means anything. It\'s why Uga is part of an unbroken line of puppies.
Tradition is the Ramblin Wreck from Georgia Tech. It\'s the Sooner Schooner and Big Bertha. Tradition is Reveille, and Ralphie and Bevo. Tradition is the War Eagle and the Air Force falcon. It\'s Howard\'s Rock and Play Like a Champion Today. It\'s "War Eagle," "Roll Tide," and "Hook \'em Horns." Tradition is Bucky Badger, and Oski, and the Lephrechaun, and Benny the Beaver. It\'s On Wisconsin and Hail to the Victors and Wake up the Echos, and that gawd awful Fight On. It\'s the Little Brown Jug, and the Shillelagh, and Paul Bunyan\'s Ax, and Floyd of Rosedale, and numerous victory bells.
Tradition
is college football.

It\'s already happening. Â Among of those doors slamming as JH walked out was Door #1. Â And, Â as always happens in power vacuums, Â there will be a cost to be paid by JH\'s departure. Â Just keep telling yourself, Â
on balance we\'re still much better off. Â Some of these might
really sting.

This all reminds me of something I had been wondering over the weekend. Â Anyone remember when we wore all red -- red jerseys and red pants -- at some point in the early 90s? Â I\'m almost positive it was under the Two-Faced Denny Green, and I think it was Big Game. Â At the time, I loved it. Â Can anyone confirm any of that?
Re: recruits visiting -

That is correct. We wore all cardinal in the 1990 Big Game. The star running back was Jon Volpe. One of the local papers wrote that Cal saw red after we ran all over them.

Actually, it was the 1989 Big Game. (It could not have been the 1990 Big Game, because it was at Berkeley, hence all white uniforms. Remember the Revenge of the Play?) As I recall, Bob Whitfield went to Denny Green with the idea. Denny said, if all the players want it, then it\'s okay. The team came out in warmups with the usual red top/white pants combo, then went back to the locker room. They re-emerged with the complete red look. (That 1989 game was significant, as it featured the emergence of Tommy Vardell. The game-clinching TD drive was a long one that was untypically Stanford - it consisted entirely of running plays, with Vardell breaking free at the end. We in the stands were wondering, "Who is that guy?")
The completely red outfit emerged again in the 1993 Big Game, which had a less that desired result. That may be a reason we haven\'t seen it since. And that\'s fine with me. It looks too....Fresno State-ish. :o

You\'re right,

I wonder if I could adjust the focus of the uniform colors debate, away from "should they have a crazy uniform once a year" or "should it use black."
Instead, to me there has always been a concrete problem: Â
The normal all-white
away uniforms look unimpressive, lightweight, diminutive.
Therefore: By all means, keep the colors
cardinal and white. Keep tradition. (while you\'re at it, go cement the big game into the last game of the schedule, perhaps on rivalry week.)
BUT ADJUST THE AWAY UNIFORMS to have much bolder appearance. cardinal pants -- OR something on the sleeves, or something on the jersey or numbers. Â As long as it will not appear dated in 2 years. Â
Just rephrasing in terms of a concrete problem rather than fad. maybe I\'m the only person that feels let down when I see the rinso-white away uniforms on TV.

I don\'t know if you\'re the only one, but they are the best-looking road unis in college (one man\'s opinion). I know $C doesn\'t like them and that\'s good enough for me.
Re: recruits visiting -
estephan500 - 01-18-2011
the pure-white away uniforms are the best in college football? well, hey, if most people feel that way, then I\'m out of luck. Â
also, in my mind, even if they were "sharp looking," ... I\'m focusing more on that they don\'t impart weight or boldness. Â You could say that they lean more towards the "cerebral" side and away from the "smash-mouth" side.

I\'ve heard that players in white are perceived as being bigger than they are....but I don\'t have any personal experience with color psychology. Anyone?

I love the all whites. My personal favorite of our uniform choices. I think the black unis are fun for every once in a while.
