Lucille Bliss. Lived on Collingwood in the Eureka Valley (you youngsters would say The Castro).

OK Mick.

Manager John McGraw
First all star NL HR: Frisch
Giant who didn’t play: Either Bill Terry or Hal Schumacher?
14 Shutout innings: Hubbell?

All at one time played for the Giants. I believe Frisch was the player/manager for the Cardinals in 1933.

1. Which pitcher threw 14 consecutive scoreless innings in All-Star competition?  Juan Marichal’s scoreless streak began with the 1964 All-Star Game and continued to 1971. He allowed just 2 runs in 18 innings pitched over eight All-Star appearances.

2. Which pitcher struck out five consecutive future Hall of Famers in an All-Star game?  Carl Hubbell.  Who were the Hall of Famers?  In order, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmy Foxx, Al Simmons, and Joe Cronin.  Bill Dickey got a single, then Hubbell struck out his sixth future Hall of Famer, Lefty Gomez.

3. Who hit the first HR for the National League in All-Star competition?  Former Giant was traded to the Cardinals six years earlier.  In the first All Star game in 1933 Frankie Frisch hit a first inning home run for a brief, 1-0 lead.  He only hit 5 HRs that season in 646 plate appearances.

4. Who was the first NL Manager in an All Star competition?  You're right, John McGraw.  It was interesting because, technically, McGraw was no longer the Giants' manager.  He'd been let go earlier in the season and replaced with Bill Terry.

5. Who was the only NL player who didn't get to play in the first All Star game?  Hal Schumacher, who went 19-12 that season and led the league in fewest hits per nine innings. Bill Terry batted fifth and went 2 for 4.

6. What did these five have in common?  They all had ties to the Giants' franchise.

Duke in 1938 and Tennessee in 1939 finished their regular seasons undefeated, untied and unscored upon. Both however lost in the Rose Bowl to USC.

What was the last college team to finish undefeated, untied and unsecored upon for an entire season?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - BostonCard - 03-01-2022

I believe they will be our opponents on Sept. 3.

Fun fact, the Red Raiders head coach that year had been an assistant at Stanford under Pop Werner.

BC

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - Phogge - 03-01-2022

Great guess BC but there is another team that did it a year later.

Early line has Colgate favored by one. Apparently based on Stanford's history of injuries in spring practice and summer camp.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - BobK - 03-01-2022

What MLB pitcher had the most seasons with 200 or more innings ?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - Phogge - 03-01-2022

You would think it was Cy Young but Bobbbbbbbb is Captain Not Obvious.

So Walter Johnson, Lefty Grove, Al Spaulding, Bobo Newsome, Two Gun Gettle?

and another in 1942 and another in 1943 (but they only played two games so I don't think they really count)

Warren Spahn?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - Phogge - 03-01-2022

Spahn. Last game of 1958. I won two box seats at Seals from a Roos brothers raffle. Braves jumped on Stu Miller for four in the first and the Giants spent the day fighting back to win it in the ninth I believe. Best game I ever saw.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - BobK - 03-01-2022

Spahn is up there.

Ok spent all or most all of his career with a California team.

Sorry - didn't see Giants' guess

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - BobK - 03-01-2022

20 seasons of 200 innings by Don Sutton

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - Phogge - 03-01-2022

BC had Colgate who was perfect in 1932 and expected a trip to the Rose Bowl that never came.

However... in 1933 DePauw went 7-0 and gave up no points.

How many NCAA track and field records are currently held by Stanford men and women?  Events and marks, please.

Followup question: How many existing NCAA track and field records were set at Stanford by athletes from other universities?
