RE: 2022 Giants thread - BobK - 05-18-2022

No not kidding I hate it and why would a batter look at the ump questing a call. But they will and I’ll lol

The system has been tested in a number of leagues and batters still argue with the home plate ump, it's natural.

Still preferable to me than batters turning around to argue with C.B. Bucknor after a series of missed calls.

RE: 2022 Giants thread - BobK - 05-18-2022

Well John Miller just said on a called third strike “ sometimes the plate is 17 inches and sometimes it’s 22”

A shame Kapler didn’t think ahead and leave Webb in for sacrifice

Three runs later Giants down 2

Now the Ump can say "Yea, I thought it was low too, but the computer says it is a strike". They can both argue with the computer.

Not me.  Human element.  Part of the game.  Also, what is the zone?  Rule book?

Joey Bart. .425.  That’s his strike out average.  Based on plate appearances.  He struck out in two big situations today.  Once with bases loaded, no outs. The other, runner on second no outs.  The former - well you can say it’s the same as a 395 foot fly out.  An outs an out.  The latter, can’t say that.  His lack of contact is an issue.

He is a big weak link offensively.   His OPS is misleading.  First, whenever there is a .150 point gap between .BA and OBP, I think its an issue.  Especially when the BA is .175.

4 HRs.  One off Albert Pujois.  Another in a blow out loss.  Can’t think of a big hit he’s had. Ever.

Right now, I want Casali catching 2 of 3.

Edit: I meant to say bases loaded TWO outs. Obviously, a k in that situation is different than if there are no outs….

Was really ugly today. Cost them the game. . . .

Giants stuck. A PR disaster was Posey’s retirement. Now the “future” can’t hit a moving object. So it is pandemic in baseball for his position but you can’t go too long with a hitter who can’t put the ball in play. Blah, blah about his defense. He’s the Ron Herbal of catchers. Right now Casali has to play more and Auerbach should be catching every day down in Richmond.

Interesting article on Juan Soto in the Athletic.  Basically stating the Nats may shop him.  And if they do - you sell the farm to get him. For the Giants, it would mean Harrison, Luciano, Matos and more. Oh, plus about $400,000,000 over about 12 years. He’s 23.  Best offensive player in game.  Closest I’ve seen to Bonds. OPS just under 1.000. He’d be the face of the franchise.  Bring out fans. And be a guy to build a lineup around. For over a decade.

I’d do it in a heartbeat (assuming first he agrees to the long term deal)  Giants won’t.  Dodgers will.

RE: 2022 Giants thread - Phogge - 05-19-2022

Would bust The Plan. Negate what they have been doing for three years.

I'm guessing the Giants are in favor of the idea.  Brandon Crawford's wife, Jalynne, is lobbying for him.

Soto is one of the answers to the following trivia question… which four major league players to have recorded 100 extra base hits before their 21st birthday.  Who were the other three (maybe I can cross-post this in the trivia thread).

RE: 2022 Giants thread - BobK - 05-19-2022

Mel Ott
A Rod
Byrce Harper

RE: 2022 Giants thread - BostonCard - 05-19-2022

Ott and Harper are correct.  A Rod is not.  Sadly the fourth guy suffered a devastating injury after being hit by a pitch and his career was never the same.

Tony Conigliaro

Correct!  What record does Conigliaro hold?

Youngest to 100 homers.

RE: 2022 Giants thread - Mick - 05-20-2022

Joe Panik retired yesterday at the age of 31.  Thought he was a terrific second baseman cut down in his prime.  First round pick of the Giants in 2011 out of St. John's, 6th in Rookie of the Year voting (he hit .305) and was an all star the next year hitting .312, OPS of .833.  Won a gold glove the next year.  Had a series of injuries over the next few year that really curtailed his career.  Very difficult to strike out, led the NL in 2016 and 2017 in most ABs per strikeout.  Was one of the few Giants to play well in the 2016 postseason, hitting .600 (6 for 10) against the Cubs with two doubles, line was .600/.615/.800/1.415.

Joe had one more good year at the age of 26 (.288 BA, .768 OPS), then that was it.  He was hammered by injuries, multiple concussions (hit in the head with pitches), pulled groin, fractured vertebrae, and a sprained thumb.

Panik's contribution to trivia: He, Crawford, Belt and Bochy were part of the first successful manager challenge on replay:

It’s one of the reasons you build depth in minors.  Giants would not have a bare cupboard.

RE: 2022 Giants thread - OutsiderFan - 05-20-2022

The Giants would make anyone but Harrison available to Nationals if they were serious about a trade for Soto.  No way in hell do you trade Harrison. If not getting him is a deal breaker for Nationals, then you say no if you are the Giants.

The Red Sox got three prospects - all position players - for Mookie Betts, who is a better all around player than Soto. Soto may be a better hitter, but Betts is a far superior defensive player with a better arm and more speed.

Only Alex Verdugo was sort of a can't miss prospect with MLB experience of the three prospects the Red Sox got, and he is the only one who has made it to the Red Sox three years after the trade.

No.  If it means Harrison, so be it.  Soto is a unicorn. 23. Harrison has potential.   And the best offensive player in baseball.

Betts is/was not the offensive force Soto is..  plus he was 27 at the time of that deal.  Soto is 23. That is a big factor.  Teams will need to offer more for Soto than Dodgers did for Betts (and I thought at the time that the Sox didn’t get enough)

Soto’s career OPS is .972.  In baseball history there are 8 players above1.000 (Soto will in all likelihood get there)

Ruth. 1.164
Williams 1.115
Gehrig 1.080
Bonds. 1.051
Greenberg (probably most underrated player in history.  He or Musial) 1.017
Hornsby. 1.010
Trout. 1.005

Sure, if they can do it without Harrison, that’s better. But it’s not (or at least shouldn’t be) a deal breaker. For some comparison, take a look back at when the Marlins traded a 24 year old Miguel Cabrera.  Yankees were in the hunt.  But supposedly would not part with Jaba Chamberlin.  Oops.

Pitching prospects, even the very top ones, are a crapshoot. Injuries play a role.  And some, despite the talent, don’t make the leap.

Soto IS what everyone dreams their top prospect to be.  For some more context, he was a key cog in Nats 2019 Championship.  At age 20.  His numbers:.282/.401/.548/949 34 HRs. 110 RBI’s. At 20.

Marco Luciano will be 21 in Sept.  He is in High A. Matos is 20. Also in A.  Ramos (whose star may be fading a bit) is 22.

Soto is a proven mlb generational talent.  Prospects, no matter how well regarded, are just that.  When Soto is on the block. - no prospect should be untouchable. (All this assumes you can get a long term agreement in place. Obviously, you don’t trade the farm for Soto as a rental).

No worries.  Giants won’t do it.  Dodgers probably will.
