Stanford wins, 3-1.  Minnesota looked great in set 2, and Stanford a bit off.  But righted things for sets 3 & 4.

Not sure why Baird's numbers were down so much from the night before (of course, she had great numbers vs. OSU).
6 kills with 4 errors on 22 attempts.  Maybe Minnesota was concentrating on her?

I hope so, and that Kipp's numbers have been down recently because opponents' game plans were to shut her down. Then for our opponents it will be pick your poison--with Rubin in the mix too.

Stanford actually hit pretty well in set 2 but Minnesota hit better.  I'd be curious to know what we did to shutdown Minn's attack after that.  Wucherer had 5 kills in that set.  In the set, Stanford had 2 aces (average for this match) and 5 service errors (the other sets averaged 3.3)

13 blocks for the match probably helped to shut down their attack.  Stanford had only 1 block in the 2nd set.


For those that whine about evening start times, maybe Stanford has an advantage for evening matches against non-West Coast times.  Minnesota (CDT) looked pretty down by set 4.

It struck me last night that all the artificial prompting for "noise" is not to enhance the team's performance but is really just for the audience. When something good happens, the monitors & PA system encourage noise.  When the team needed audience support in the 2nd set, there was little such encouragement.    (I have to remember to bring noise cancelling earbuds.)

Overall a really good weekend.  The team recovered well from the loss of a set.  Maybe they pressed too hard on their serves when they were down.  But they didn't let Minnesota back into the match after that.

My foam earplugs are... generic foam earplugs. :-)

I use high-fidelity "musician's" earplugs that reduce volume by 20 dB while retaining good sound quality (foam earplugs alter the sound). I use Etymotic Research ones (~$20; recommended by my audiologist) but there are others.

The Pac12 Insider allotted time for this match had only old football. I wonder if the technical difficulties waa lack of personnel related to the Pac-12 implosion.

I started using foam earplugs at live music shows (nothing crazy, jazz and blues) a couple of years ago.  Getting to that age where wisdom finally prevails.  Kevin Hambly, to make this germane, seems to be a jazz/blues guy as well.  I'm sure he sees improvisational parallels between volleyball and music.

I frequently read a Penn State WVB message board.  PSU was the consensus national winner of the transfer portal this summer.  They got two elite players who would start for most teams plus a number of highly regarded players.  Talk on the board started about a National Championship.  FF was a sure thing.

Then the season started.  Penn State lost their first two matches.  Yesterday they got demolished by Louisville.  Now the PSU fans have turned on the coaching staff.  They say it was a mistake to exclusively recruit through the portal.  They believe some underclassmen may transfer after this season for fear of being pushed back down the totem poll by more recruiting through the portal.

With a record of 4-3 Penn State is ranked #13 in today's AVCA poll.

You listen to a lot of music?

Not so much, but I am on a lot of concalls and Zoom meetings. I can understand what people are saying a lot better with the audio going to my hearing aids with Bluetooth. It's also nice that when I get an audio notification on my phone, it doesn't disturb other people. When not using Bluetooth I have to crank those up to max volume so I don't miss noticing them.
