Whatever "work arounds" the Ivies might do (preferred admission status, standard financial aid--based on family income and assets, lucrative student jobs from alums/fans not allowed for students with athletic scholarships) Stanford can do too.

Exactly. Most of the rumors about the Ivy-League "work arounds" come from need-based financial aid. Many student athletes come from lower-income families, and the Ivies are generous with need-based aid for lower-income (and even middle-income) students (as is Stanford). When an athlete from a low-income family gets a hefty scholarship to an Ivy, people who don't understand the way the Ivies work often think it's an athletic scholarship, not realizing that a non-athlete from the same family background would have gotten the same need-based scholarship. (Of course, to get need-based financial aid, you need to be admitted first, and that's where being a gifted athlete makes a big difference.)
I would point out, though, that the last item you mentioned ("lucrative student jobs from alums/fans not allowed for students with athletic scholarships") is against both Ivy League and NCAA rules. The rules covering student jobs for non-scholarship athletes are the same as for scholarship athletes.

So, I dont follow recruiting. Can someone do a quick summary of how things look for this year. The vibe Ive gotten is it will be a down year relatively speaking. (That is not to say we wont be excited about the kids that commit).

Down year is fair. With the exception of recruit OT Nicolas Petit-Frere and WR Amon-Ra St. Brown (both of which probably won't go to Stanford), there's no super high-end recruit. On the other hand, the recruiting class gets numbers at positions of need (at linebacker, with ILB Jacob Mangum-Farrar and expected commit ILB Dax Hollifield, in particular), and has boosted depth at other positions with strong pipelines (WR features four-stars Michael Wilson and Simi Fehoko; DL features four-star Thomas Booker and expected commit four-star Andres Fox). I'm concerned that numbers aren't sufficient at offensive line (Stanford has OL Trey Stratford, from Texas; and is expected to sign OL Chris Murray).
Still, if everyone commits who's expected to, you have several premium recruits (QB Jack West, WR Michael Wilson, WR Simi Fehoko, DL Thomas Booker, DL Andres Fox, ILB Dax Hollifield, OL Chris Murray) that should roughly match outgoing talent, at least from a recruiting rankings perspective. (Chryst, Burns, Love, Schultz, Kalambayi, Fanaika are my expected former highly-ranked recruit departures. So there'd be slightly more incoming talent than outgoing talent, which is good.)
