Without UCLA and USC, what’s the future of Pac-12 women’s basketball? - The Athletic

The article points out that Pac 12 women's basketball strength comes from other teams than usc and ucla.  The article goes on to acknowledge the current success in recruiting by usc and ucla, especially of southern california talent, but questions if that recruiting success will continue once usc and ucla join the Big 10.  Points out over the last 10 years six different Pac 12 schools have made it to the final four and none of the six were either usc or ucla.

I'm not afraid to admit my ignorance. What's a "Quadrant 1" win? I tried to infer it from this list and failed.

I didn't know either!

Typically, a quadrant 1 win is considered a "good win", while a quadrant 4 loss is considered a "bad loss". The quadrants are defined as follows: Quadrant 1: Home games vs. RPI teams ranked in the top 30; neutral games vs.

Sorry, I should have specified that I was referring to NET quadrants.  (The NET ranking replaced RPI as the primary sorting tool for the NCAA WBB selection committees beginning in 2020.)

The NET rankings break down the quality of opponents into four different groupings (or "quadrants") based on where the game took place.  A "Quadrant 1" win is 1) a home win against a NET top 30 team, 2) a neutral win against a NET top 50 team, or 3) an away win against a NET top 75 team.  The list I presented ranked the teams based on how many especially good (Quadrant 1 or "tournament quality") wins they have so far.

P.S. My references to "rankings" in the bracketed notes is to AP rankings.

Thanks for the clarification -- well described

Just watched the last bit of overtime of Notre Dame - Louisville; Olivia Miles (I think we wanted her) hit the game-winning shot at the buzzer, after Louisville came down from 4 points down with about 20 seconds left.

Watching Uconn / Villanoa. Top 15 matchup. I'm not very impressed with Villanova. Maddy Siegrist is excellent but her supporting cast is not. They've had countless wide open three pointers and Uconn is daring anyone to beat them but Siegrist. It's a winning strategy.

Also watching U Conn vs Villanova, also unimpressed with V. At this point, I'm beginning to think that I want U Conn to prevail. solidify their place as a #1 seed, which would mean we wouldn't have to deal with them until the final four, assumig we are also a #1 seed.  And if they get Azzi Fudd back in March, wow. . . wouldn't want to face them at all.

Iowa's Czinano is a really good post player.  Clark is clearly the best player in WBB, but without Czinano at the post I doubt Iowa would be a top 15 team.  Clark gets a lot of her assists feeding her. Today they combined for 50 points.

RE: WBB: AZ Vvs Utah - CompSci87 - 02-19-2023

USC vs Cal going down to the wire.

Wow, USC fouls Curry taking a shot with about 0.4 seconds left and the game tied.

Whoa. Refs decided the foul is not a foul because the illegal contact occurred after time expired. Kyle Bacon, ace ref, strikes again? So it goes to OT.

Cal's former coach Lindsay Gottlieb vs. her former lead assistant Charmin Smith is a good story. Not sure if announcers have run with that one.

And Cal wins 81-78!

RE: WBB: Other Teams 22-23 season - PVTree - 02-19-2023

Watching Ole Miss and South Carolina head into OT. Ole Miss couldn't get a shot off with their last possession, turning it over. Boston got off a shot at the buzzer near the rim that bounced off.

Could be an upset in the brewing.

South Carolina prevails 64-57.

RE: WBB: AZ Vvs Utah - CompSci87 - 02-19-2023

SoCar vs. Mississippi went to overtime.

... SoCar outscored Miss 9-2 in the OT for the win. I was watching USC/Cal.

Cal beats USC. 81-78 in OT. 81!!!!

RE: WBB: Other Teams 22-23 season - CompSci87 - 02-19-2023

I posted to the wrong thread about SoCal/USC and SoCar/Mississippi ... just moved my posts here. They're now above.

South Carolina is mortal.  They should not count on a natty just yet.

I think Bobk was referring to the scoring output, 81.

I see from the play-by-play log that in the last 32 secs Marshall missed 2 layups and our new unfavorite player Littleton missed 2 3’s. Meanwhile Cal hits 3 of 4 FTs to win.

Good for Charmin Smith, way to go!

I know I know ;)  Just pulling his leg a little.  Bob is such a good guy, he needs a humorous tease ever so often.  Goodness knows he reciprocates!

RE: WBB: Other Teams 22-23 season - martyup - 02-19-2023

Anyone surprised that Colorado had a player ejected today against AZ for a flagrant foul?  It was Vonley.  She wrapped her arm around Reece's neck and pulled her to the floor.  I sure wish the Pac-12 refs would recognize teams that consistently cross the line with physical play and start whistling them into compliance.  Instead, they hurt Brink's college career by calling ticky-tack fouls against her while allowing other players to mug her in the paint.

Colorado...only surprised they got caught.  Not surprised they committed this or a 100 other nasty fouls.  Only USC is their rival for "physical" play.
