My roommate (who is definitely not a sports fan, and would not be found on this board, although he was a varsity athlete) dual majored in Mathematical Sciences and Political Science. Everyone always assumed that Mathematical Sciences was his "real" major, but he cared more about PoliSci and has spent his entire career in DC, shifting between government jobs and academics.

I had several friends who were MathSci majors in the early 1980s.  If I recall correctly, it spanned 4 disciplines - math, CS, operations research and statistics.  One of those friends is now applying his experience and love for sports to develop a web service to help fantasy players select their teams.

First time poster, long time reader, of this site and TOS and TOOS (the other other site).  I like them each fine, for different reasons, although it would be easier to have them in one place. 

To answer TrumpCard's question at the bottom of page 70, I am not 100% sure but think you are right: highly-sought but academically borderline recruits do not get negative news in August.  In some other sports, yes, as there are fewer spots (like tennis, soccer) and if a more highly sought recruit is admitted and accepts then the next ones in line get the news and move on (usually, since they all know what each other are doing).  But in football, most 4 and 5 stars on the border academically can earn credibility with admissions by either achieving good grades in tough classes (AP or Honors) in Autumn quarter/semester or improving their test scores.  Here's to many of them doing the work and getting admitted this year, could be a banner year!!

And thanks for the welcomes.  I am a 3x Stanford grad (co-term and MBA, so really 2x), and work part time at the University.  Flo Mo, a fraternity, off campus, was on the edge of a varsity sport for 2 years.  I have had season ticket or tickets since about 1993, and was at 1982 Big Game (where both arms raised began, I believe, in response to the erroneously approved touchdown at the end of the first half, when the Weenie receiver slid under a bouncing ball, caught it and was mistakenly awarded the score.)  Other sports: I really like futbol (Spanish, Champions League and World Cup, and increasingly Premier League; any of my kids' sports; good team-oriented hoops -- Stanford men and women, Dubs...; biking (doing, not watching)).  And I love Pt Reyes.

Hey, I'm new to the board and actually new to Stanford athletics. I grew up a die-hard BYU fan and still follow them closely. I'm a fan of college football and have been looking for a second team to cheer for. I just started working for Stanford a few months ago, so I figured this was a great opportunity to jump on the bandwagon. I just got my season tickets. I'm excited for what looks to be a great home schedule this year.

Are there any videos or websites I should check out as a new fan? I've been watching old Stanford games on Youtube to pass the time over the summer.

Welcome, Bonesaw!  Robbie has given you a couple of great reference points for Stanford football.  Not ALL of our games are that exciting.  We actually win some games in a runaway.  But those examples are pretty representative of the Stanford football experience.  ::)

Welcome, 8onesaw!  Are you working in one of the academic departments?

Let me add one of the great moments in Stanford basketball history.  Stanford and Arizona used to play some of the best games in the country.  The 2004 game at Stanford was the most memorable.  Stanford was #2 and 19-0.  Arizona was #12.
