FWIW, 247Sports lists Alabama, Georgia, and Texas as Manning's three top schools.
We aren't even on the list.

In general it's a good idea to stop listing 247sports' "top schools" as meaning literally anything (unless based on a top list or article).

In this case, however, Manning ain't coming.

I'm not completely out on Lonergan yet. He's coming on an OV in June and could've already committed anywhere else (read: South Carolina) at this point. Why bother waiting?

I'm not completely giving up either, but what was with the offer to Novosad? The sequencing (before Lonergan being off the board) and timing (a month and a half before Lonergan's last visits) is strange. I have to keep open some possibility that we've fundamentally changed the way we recruit this position, extend offers, and/or intend offers to be committable, but years of watching Shaw operate create some cognitive dissonance here.

If articles are that much more meaningful, I read an article a few days ago that listed South Carolina as a heavy favorite for Lonergan. The author (who clearly didn't have a lot of respect for Stanford) listed Stanford as the last one of Lonergan's top five and said we were lucky to be there. Reminded me of the Air Boss comments to Goose in "Top Gun".

He’s wrong. At worst we are #2. (But of course at the end of the day #2 ain’t #1.)

To use another Top Gun analogy- Gentlemen, this is about recruiting. There are no points for second place.

CB, OT, Edge.

I like our chances with the first 2. Shelby is a name that popped up very recently so no idea.

RE: Class of 2023 - TrumpCard - 05-23-2022

Thanks, Samuel.  A 4-star corner out of SJB should have a solid chance to contribute right away.

Another Edge. Clearly a big recruiting focus, which I agree with given the switch to 4-3. There will be 3 on the field at once in non-nickel packages (i.e. obvious run downs) since the strongside Sam LB will likely also be a player given the "Edge" designation on the roster.

I'm reading on another site. That Jshawn Frausto-Ramos has given his commitment to Stanford.

finally.......a commitment on defense.
looks like Samuel was right once again.

4-star defenders don’t grow on trees around here. Nice get for Shaw & Co.

RE: Class of 2023 - msqueri - 05-31-2022

Did one of my three-dimensional analyses on Frausto-Ramos but it's too long for this board's software. I'll post the evidence part and then wait for somebody to post before chasing it with my bottom line (pretty sure the software will block me from dividing into two posts back-to-back):

Services: 247 composite #252 (#25 CB), On3 composite #312 (#30 CB), 247 #30 CB, Rivals #211 (#29 CB, 5.8 grade, same grade as Brandon Jones, Kendall Williamson, Paulson Adebo, Treyjohn Butler, Quenton Meeks, Ben Edwards, Brandon Simmons, Wayne Lyons), On3 #65 CB, ESPN #281 (#31 CB)

Offers: Stanford, Arizona, Arizona State, Boston College, Cal, Cincinnati, Colorado, Florida International, Kansas, Louisville, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Ole Miss, Oregon, Oregon State, USC, Virginia Tech

Production: Frausto-Ramos transferred to St. John Bosco for his junior year. St. John Bosco, of course, plays the toughest competition in the country. Frausto-Ramos had 2.1 tackles per game (15th on the team) and 2 passes defended (tied for fifth). As a sophomore for Alemany playing against above-average competition, he had one of those pandemic-shortened spring seasons and unfortunately no stats were reported for his team. As a freshman for Alemany playing against very good competition (plus playing against Miller Moss in practice), he had 2.7 tackles per game (ninth), 1 sack (tied for fifth), 1 tackle for loss (tied for ninth). This production is staggeringly bereft of things like interceptions and passes defended, to a level I'm not sure I've ever seen before. However, at cornerback that can have a simple explanation - he locked down his island and didn't get action because he took away a whole part of the field against very good competition. Plus, passes defended are notoriously difficult to chart and easy to undercount at the high school level. Certainly he's been swimming in very competitive Southern California waters for a while. With a recruit like this, it is probably most instructive to try to break down the production into more insightful bites:

* His freshmen highlights were mostly tackling, mostly on run plays and broken plays. There were a few passes defended. He appeared to line up mostly in the slot as a nickel back. Certainly a willing and physical tackler, especially for a freshman. By his sophomore year he was predominantly at cornerback and those highlights have many more highlights in coverage (as mentioned below, many against Maalik Murphy and Gardena Serra). His junior year was more of the same: Frausto-Ramos on an island locking down opposing receivers and helping in run support.

* Alemany's 2019 schedule included several opportunities for freshman Frausto-Ramos to go up against nationally elite seniors. LV Bunkley had a decent game (80 yards) against Alemany but none of the catches were with Frausto-Ramos in coverage. Our own John Humphreys went off for 160 yards and a touchdown against Alemany, but he generally went off in most games that year; neither Humphreys nor Frausto-Ramos highlights show them going up against each other. Our own Bryce Farrell was hurt when Oaks Christian played Alemany. The highest-profile QB Frausto-Ramos faced that year was Ethan Garbers, who had a run-of-the-mill game against Alemany (ninth best passer rating among 15 games that season).

* I don't have much to go on for the short pandemic season.  He had a game to forget against Bishop Amat, as a guy named Brady Kalau (good high school player but not a prospect) had a big day (143 yards and 3 touchdowns) and highlights confirm much of that was one-on-one against Frausto-Ramos, including two touchdowns. He then ended that weird campaign on a much better note, collaborating with his teammates to stifle Texas 4-star QB commit Maalik Murphy. Murphy had the worst game of his season by several measures (barely more than 5 yards per attempt, completion percentage below 36 percent, etc.). For some reason I'm not seeing single game highlights for Frausto-Ramos posted for that game but I'm glad I used some other methods to determine that Frausto-Ramos did play in that game.....and completely dominated. If you check out his sophomore highlights, notice how many of the highlights come against a team wearing all blue with a tall QB out of the shotgun who is wearing #4 with red sleeves and red stockings. That's Maalik Murphy. I lost track but there's something like eight passes defended in the highlights from that game alone, including two in the end zone. It appears Murphy having such a poor game was because he kept targeting Frausto-Ramos and it just didn't work. This is very nice to see.

* His first game for St. John Bosco as a junior was against Miami Central. He blanketed Miami commit Lamar Seymore, defending a pass and having another play or two on his highlights shutting Seymore down, with no Seymore highlights victimizing Frausto-Ramos. Then against his old Alemany buds he helped lock down Arizona WR Kevin Green to one of his three worst games of the season; there are no highlights of Green victimizing Fausto-Ramos and there is a highlight of a pass breakup on a play our new guy tracked so well that it could have been an interception but he didn't come down with it. Then current 3-star Delano Franklin didn't do anything, nor did his teammates (111 yards passing). Up next could have been one of the challenge of all challenges, Missouri mega whale 5-star WR Luther Burden from East Saint Louis, Illinois. Burden is one of the biggest WR prospects of all time (247 composite says #16 all-time, sandwiched between Reggie Williams and AJ Green). Alas, Frausto-Ramos did not seem to be matched against Burden hardly at all based on the extensive highlights of Burden's dominance in a losing effort. Frausto-Ramos did not post highlights of the mythical mid-season national championship against Mater Dei and Harvard WR Cooper Barkate (close to a composite 4-star) did badly eat our guy up at least once and USC whale WR CJ Williams looks like he may have scored a goal line touchdown on a slant (kind of hard to see if it was against #12 or #2). The highlights for a Portland State receiver are grainy but it looks like he may have scored a touchdown against Frausto-Ramos. A Santa Margarita underclassmen victimized him on a touchdown on a play with tight coverage where the ball was deflected but the receiver stuck with it on the rebound.

* For the sake of breaking things up I will do the last three games Frausto-Ramos played separately as they were against extremely tough competition and the most recent data points. His third to last game and the ill-fated semifinal game were both against Servite, which means going against the Arizona battery of QB Noah Fifita and whale WR Tetairoa McMillan. The first time they squared off Frausto-Ramos most decidedly got the better of the matchup, with McMillan mustering only 23 yards, the lowest output of his varsity career and Fifita not faring better - a 44 passer rating with 3.42 yards per attempt. With the experience of the first one under his belt, Fifita only attempted (or perhaps I should say the Servite coaches drew up) only 10 pass attempts. McMillan had only 34 yards and Servite only had 46 passing yards total. Every highlight I saw was Frausto-Ramos locking up McMillan. These are a pair of exciting data points. The last game I want to highlight is the penultimate one because it was against USC QB commit Malachi Nelson, the consensus #2 player in America. Unfortunately, Frausto-Ramos did not post highlights of this game. Nelson's game highlights are grainy but do show at least a couple of significant completions, one of which had tight coverage and I'm not expert enough to tell if Nelson got the better due to a good back shoulder throw or due to luck and another in which Frausto-Ramos got juked to give up some modest yards after the catch.

RE: Class of 2023 - msqueri - 05-31-2022

My bottom line for whenever the board allows me to post:

Sorry if the lengthy analysis is overkill but I figure if there's ever a recruit for close film analysis it's a corner (since conventional stats are less interesting) playing the best competition in America. The bottom line is this is really great news for several reasons. First, it's a defensive 4-star and, last year notwithstanding, defense is typically harder for us to recruit than offense. Second, the services are almost unanimous (all but On3) not only on his level of profile but on precisely where he is in that 4-star echelon, which is a level of recruit we can typically feel confident will help us at DB. A Kendall Williamson/Wayne Lyons/Ben Edwards type here is probably the median and mode outcome. Better is possible. Third, this is a significant need - we've recruited safety solidly in recent years but when it comes to pure corners Joshua Thompson is quite lonely in the pipeline. This not only changes that but it gives us a corner who projects even better (though I quite like Thompson too). Fourth, this makes Shaw's third (I believe) St. John Bosco scholarship player and one can never complain about a pipeline with one of America's top programs. It's unsettling to get a recruit with almost zero statistical production (which I think is a fair characterization of a guy who's been starting on varsity since his freshman year and has apparently never forced a turnover) and I would prefer to have objective evidence of speed (which I don't have). But otherwise there's really nothing not to like. He gets put on an island against major college football WRs and QBs and typically those opponents are in for a tough day at the office. In a few cases he appears to be the boogeyman for some big-time stars. Those who spend as much time with his highlights as I have will love his eagerness, physicality, and instincts in run support. While I wish we had it all and there were more ballhawk kind of film, more evidence of elite speed, and no blemishes on the film I watched, that's asking a lot. Based on where we are as a program, this is a great get for us.
