I imagine there are two perceived advantages for the spread that HS WR recruits see: pass happy offenses, and more receivers on the field. They will put up video game numbers, if they are good. Stanford coaches, this year at least, can counter by talking about the strides made in our own receiving corps this year, and the big plays of both Rector and Cajuste.
But also, I think the coaches really need to know who they want to go after. Given our attachment to running the ball, and the often stated need for receivers to be good blockers downfield, we really want someone who is strong enough (or can become strong enough, with the help of Turley and his staff) and is willing to do the less glamorous aspects of the WR position. Griff Whalen showed it's not always about being 6-4, 220. If a recruit isn't willing to do the work to Spring the running game, he probably isn't a good fit for our team in any case.

Seems to me that playing in a pro-style offense especially at Stanford is better preparation for the NFL and therefore a better sell for all positions with the exception of WR, where the gaudy statistics may make more of an impression on scouts than blocking downfield.

You may be right. But I wasn't even thinking about what gets you to the NFL, just what makes a receiver a good fit in the Stanford system. If a recruit is that tunnel-vision focused on the NFL, that may be another sign that he's not a great fit for Stanford, IMO

Coaches might point out that Doug Baldwin started for the Super Bowl champions this year, and even the lightly-regarded Griff Whalen has found a home with the Indianapolis CardinalColts. Video game numbers don't always translate into NFL success.

A quick google search of "Chris Warren" and "Stanford" shows me this guy is not just a great Texas HS football player, but also a high powered diplomat. Gotta love the extracurriculars. ;D

More often than not, a first or second generation American is a good student. Immigrant families of all colors prize education. (There was only 1 guy on my floor in my frosh dorm who could say all his grandparents were born in the US). Immigrant families typically hold the following schools in the highest esteem: Stanford, Harvard, and MIT. Of those three only Stanford plays FBS football and offers athletic scholarships.

I teach a course on sociocultural contexts in development. It is fascinating the difference in educational aspirations among recent immigrants vs. those with 3 or more generations in the U.S.

Ever since Harbaugh, we've occasionally enjoyed sending coded tweets to recruits and/or trolling other fanbases. (Shaw epically trolled Michigan back during the Jabrill Peppers saga.)
So this is a curious one. Obviously we're recruiting some people (e.g. Mekhi Brown, Daylon Mack) committed to other schools. But are there people losing their heads over it? (Or maybe: just bragging.)

student-athletes of Nigerian Background - FrankO - 02-23-2014
I had two Nigerian classmates while an undergrad at MIT (Class of '63), Sylvester Okereke (Yoruba) and Robert Efimba (Ibo)... both very well educated and prepared for the full rigor MIT demands...
the elite/upper class from Nigeria that comes to the USA (and UK) are very well educated, prize the very highest academic standards and demand strong academic performance from their kids...
we've had many football players of Nigerian descent/heritage... during the last decade or so, it started with NT Babatunde Oshinowo (under Buddy Teevens)... and many more have since followed 'Baba'... in what has become for us, a veritable 'Nigerian pipeline'
today we have (WR) Francis Owusu, (NT) Ikenna Nwafor, (S) Kyle Olugbode, redshirt Freshman (LB) Peter Kalambayi and DL Aziz Shittu... while DB Usua Amanam is a graduating senior. Not certain all are Nigerian (perhaps one is from another west African country, eg, Ghana)
in women's Basketball the Ogwumike sisters are also of Nigerian heritage (2nd generation)
in all cases, the parents of these student-athletes were demanding and made sure that their children were superior academic performers...
