RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 - StanfordMatt - 04-29-2023

Down 5-2 in the 5th and UCLA still has the bases loaded. Stanford pitchers have combined to issue 3,726 walks through 4.1 IP.

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 - terry - 04-29-2023

Stanford lost, 9-6. Stanford pitchers walked 12 and hit 1.

I was there. This is 100% accurate. At the end of 5, Stanford had used 5 pitchers.

The topology of today’s strike zone must be non-differentiable.  Explains some of the walks.

Yet UCLA pitchers walked only 2.

Did not say it applied to both teams.

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 - Spiny_Norman - 04-30-2023

Saturday was the 3rd (!) game this season in which Stanford pitchers had walked 12 opponents.

I was at the game.

Update: the KZSU announcers don't think much of today's strike zone, either.

Idea: if UCLA batters are beating the shift consistently, maybe don’t shift.

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 - StanfordMatt - 04-30-2023

We’re ranked 184th nationally, giving up 4.93 walks per 9 but the NCAA hasn’t updated their stats yet to include yesterday’s 12 free passes.

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 - StanfordMatt - 04-30-2023

Today’s two errors triggered me to look at our defensive ranking, too. We rank #118 nationally with a .971 fielding percentage.

Put simply, we haven’t played very clean baseball this season. I don’t think there’s any doubt that our hitting can take us far in Omaha. Our pitching staff has the stuff to dominate as well but if we don’t clean up the sloppiness and eliminate the walks and errors, we won’t make it past the Supers.

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 - JJJ - 04-30-2023

Alberto Rios hits a granny B8 to give us a 10-7 lead!!!

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 - Madera86 - 04-30-2023

I was about to post that our offense has gone quiet against better pitching, and then I tuned in to see Rios hit a grand slam against UCLA to put us up 10-7.

But yeah, we've given away a lot of free bases this season, and our defense hasn't been too sharp. Is it too late in the season to fix that?

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 - PVTree - 04-30-2023

I will be very happy if we get to the CWS. Unfortunately, I don't think we have the team to win it all. We are weaker on offense than last year although I think there's a slight uptick in our pitching over last year.

On offense, we lost starters:

Jones
Crampton
Huff
Barrera

Replaced by:

Moore
Cobb
Rios
Various

The only player I think we replaced (by position) without dropoff is Huff. Moore is playing very well.

Jones, of course, can't be replaced by someone new. Even with the improvement of returning players from the previous year, I don't see the bottom of our order being feared as it was last year. No easy outs in our lineup last year.

Not the case this year as we have seen with some glaring offensive dry spells. Our bottom of the lineup doesn't have the same pop from what I have seen so far.

Our pitching has improved as last year we had 1 terrific starter and 1 or 2 reliable bullpen pitchers. This year we have 2 good starters (although Scott may be hitting the freshman wall) and around 3 reliable bullpen pitchers.

That doesn't appear to be true, at least the team at this point in the season (40 games played)* seems to be better on offense and worse on pitching/defense than last year at the same point. It's true that last year the offense got hot late as the weather warmed up, and it remains to be seen if it will this year or not.

* the team has actually played 41 games but the stats for today's game aren't added in yet. Though since the team scored 10 and gave up 7 today, I don't think the trend will be any different.

A few stats:
Stat               2022            2023
runs/gm           6.6              7.8
HRs/gm           1.35            1.58
AVG               .289             .299
SLG               .491             .500
PITCHING/DEFENSE
ERA               3.89             5.39
Hits/gm**      8.17             8.63
BB/gm           3.87             5.17
ERR/gm         1.0               1.1

**For simplicity I used hits, walks and errors per game instead of per 9 innings.

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 - PVTree - 04-30-2023

Despite the stats indicating the opposite, from watching some 7 games this year, I get the sense we are offensively weaker this year.

How is the conference this year vs. last year? Is it weaker (Stanford playing vs. worse teams than last year)? Is it possible that our bench players are doing much better when given the opportunity than last year's bench?

Last year, I thought we had a killer's row 1 through 9 in the lineup. This year, I see a dropoff.

On the pitching side, Alex Williams had an incredible regular season, but struggled in the post season. Matthews was strong in the bullpen. This year, we have Matthews and Scott starting, with Bruno and Dowd in the bullpen.

I'll take last year's offense with this year's pitching.

Many thanks.  That's consistent with my intuition.  This team lives (and dies) with the long ball.

Speaking of Brock Jones, a couple of guys asked about him at the Saturday game.  He's currently playing A-ball with the Charleston (SC) Riverdogs.  He's gotten very adept at working walks.  Or maybe nobody wants to pitch to him.  Anyway, here's his stats:

Your update on Jones and the comments above about Williams and his late season struggles last year made me look up Williams' progress in the minors so far.

The end of the year collapse for Williams was perhaps the steepest decline I have ever seen - at least in the running. He went from being the best pitcher in the Pac 12 to the worst guy Stanford was throwing out there. Over his last four outings (Pac 12 tournament and the NCAA tournament) he had game ERAs of 7.7 (Arizona), 9.6 (Texas State), 40.5 (UConn), and 10.4 (Arkansas). It was so bad and so sudden I was convinced he had some terrible injury.

So, his minor stats so far.
2022 he started 2 games in rookie ball. It appears he went 5 perfect innings.
2023 he is starting in high A ball with the Beloit Sky Carp. He has started 3 games so far, 16 total innings pitched, 4.5 ERA, 1.44 WHIP.
[Looks like 2 of 3 starts were pretty good, but struggled in his second start. However he went on the 7 day injured list after start #3]

Troy, credit to you as well for calling it when Rios stepped to the plate, telling us that he had already been on base 4 times in the game and was probably the player the Bruins would have least wanted to face.

Thank you, Norman, for thanking Troy. He is absolutely terrific in the booth. And that call was the stuff of legends.
