Doesn’t the rule merely state that if she played indoor, she would count towards the indoor scholarship limit? So, if at some point we were below the limit, Hambly could recruit internally, no?

Not unless they recently changed the rule. As I understand it the first two years a beach scholarship player can not participate on the indoor team. They can play indoors their junior and senior years.
It was put in place when beach volleyball was approved as an NCAA sport. The purpose was to prevent schools from creating a "sham" beach VB team to provide additional scholarship players for the indoor team.

That's kind of puzzling. Having the beach recruit's scholarship count towards the indoor team as soon as she plays in an indoor match (as happens with other similar two sport situations) would already prevent using the beach team to effectively get extra indoor scholarships. Hmm, but maybe the idea is to prevent stashing players on the beach team with beach scholarships while they are really effectively redshirting or acting as practice players for the indoor team...? Does the rule against "participating" with the indoor team include practicing?

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the point being made. If Hambly gave her an indoor scholarship to count against the indoor team that's fine.
But the rule is that players on a beach scholarship (i.e. Stowell) can not play on the indoor team for the first two years if they have a beach scholarship.

So, in other situations, a two-sport athlete who played, say, in football and baseball, would “count” towards the scholarship limit in football, but not baseball. There’s a hierarchy in mens sports that goes football - basketball - other sports. In women’s sports, a woman who played basketball and volleyball (for example Kristin Folkl), count towards the basketball limit.
I assume that in this hierarchy, dual indoor/beach players count towards indoor volleyball, and would be “free” to the beach team. However, it sounds like there might be a carve out for upperclassmen in the beach team, who can be free to the indoor team, which is cool.
Anyway, what I was suggesting was that Stowell isn’t prohibited from playing indoors, just that if she were to play indoors, her scholarship would count towards the indoor limit.

Yes, that's correct. Sorry I initially missed your point.
I brought up Stowell playing indoors because in my opinion Stanford doesn't have any good passing OHs. Maybe Rubin will fill the bill but in the Under Armour game I felt her front row play was a little underwhelming.
Typically beach players are pretty good passers. If they can't pass, 100% of the serves will come to them.

Yeah, there is no hiding in beach, which in some ways makes it more compelling, and the athletes who play it have to be more well-rounded than indoor, where you can be more of a specialist.
I’m wondering whether Hambly shouldn’t try to get an elite libero , so that Oglive can move to OH, where she has acquitted herself well in emergency duty last year, which would dramatically improve the overall defense. Oglive is, after all, a converted OH.

Oglivie is a converted OH like Hentz was a converted OH. Both recruited to be the Libero. Oglivie might be our 5th OH but that’s at an emergency level. Plus she’s a very good Libero
Stowell is a very good indoor player per her ranking however if 12 on scholarship she can’t play indoor.
Belardi a to be Frosh is both indoor and Beach and seems to have an indoor scholarship. There was talk that she could be a walk on given her family donations to Stanford.

I think Kelly Belardi, who is slated to play both indoors and beach, was also at the NTDP in Manhattan Beach.
(I don't know if she will be on scholarship. if so, she will count towards the total of 12 allowed for indoor, as discussed above.)

Belardi probably is on scholarship. Hard to understand why Hambly felt the need to use a scholarship for a student from a family that is close to billionaire status.

A National Letter of Intent is a legally-binding contract which says that you will attend that college for a minimum of 1 academic year in exchange for an athletic scholarship. Once you sign a NLI, the recruiting process is over. No other college is allowed to recruit you.
BobK, is there any other interpretation to the above statement other than a NLI means the recruit receives a scholarship and is not a walk-on.

This is why I believe she’s on full scholarship. Of course only full for WVB

At Stanford it’s good for 4 years minimum

I have seen photos of "signing" ceremonies for non-scholarship players. But they didn't call them a "Letters of Intent", IIRC.

I have also John. Several times. One I learned later was a financial package for Stanford. Not an LOI.
However if we don’t sign a player in the spring Belardi would make 12 on scholarship
Of course like James Keefe it could be for one year or more by agreement with the player and family

It's funny: the schedule was up in December (I linked to it), and then it disappeared again. I see it is back, and the default now when you select "schedule". Not sure if anything has changed since last month.
I did notice they aren't playing at home until April this year. That may be smart; they have had some pretty cool and rainy weather sometimes in March.

I watched some videos of Hoffman. I predict Stanford beach wins an NC before indoors gets its next NC. 2024 is looking pretty good IMO for beach to contend for a championship.
This season Stanford starts out playing UCLA and Hawaii the first day. That's going to be two losses but it doesn't bother me because Stanford will do well enough to make the 16 team NCAA tournament. If fully healthy in the tournment Stanford has a better chance of knocking off some top teams.
